POST Fairy tale

Een sprookje als werkelijkheid en de werkelijkheid als sprookje.

"Post Fairy tale" is een film die de vertellingen van E.T.A. HOFFMANN laat herleven in het huidige Kaliningrad - een ontmoeting van twee werelden: die van het sprookje en die van de moderne wereld. De botsing tussen een tegenstrijdige geschiedenis en de realiteit van het moderne bestaan.

Motivatie

Voor mij is het belangrijk de film "Post Fairy tale" te maken, omdat het thema van oorlog en vrede met de dag actueler wordt. Juist nu, in de aanloop naar Kerst en Oud en Nieuw, op het moment waarop het geloof in magie en mirakels herleeft, wil ik mensen de vraag stellen in welke tijd we nu leven en of er ruimte is voor een sprookje?

Zoals Hoffmann ooit zei: “The human spirit is itself the most wonderful fairytale that can possibly be. What a magnificent world lies enclosed within ourbosoms!”

Inspiratie en historische achtergrond

Ik ben geboren in Kaliningrad in 1985. Veertig jaar daarvoor was er nog geen Kaliningrad. De stad heette Koenigsberg. Daar kwam de schrijver Hoffmann in 1776 ter wereld. Wij zijn op dezelfde grond geboren, maar in verschillende landen, omdat oorlog een lijn heeft getrokken tussen onze realiteiten. Zij heeft tweederde van de stad verwoest en de oude beschaving vernietigd. Op de plek van de ruïnes is een nieuwe stad herrezen, met een nieuwe cultuur. Tussen ons zijn eeuwen, verschillende talen en gebruiken.

Het verhaal gaat over een plaats waar enkel de zeewinden en duinen de geheimen van vroegere beschavingen bewaren. Het is een vreemd en magisch land – een Russisch eiland in de Europese “zee”. De rijkdommen van het verleden worden geopenbaard in het heden. De havens en ruïnes van de stad, de bunkers en het Duitse fort bestaan samen met de Russisch-Orthodoxe witte kerken van steen, de Sovjet flats en de postmoderne winkelcentra. Het dagelijkse leven wordt overheerst door een constante herinnering aan een voorbije oorlog, in een gebied waar iedereen een vreemdeling is.

Kaliningrad, een eiland in de Baltische zee, is ingesloten tussen de landen van de Europese Unie. Een geopolitiek gebied, waar het gedachtegoed van Immanuel Kant en Vladimir Lenin samen voortbestaan.

Waar gaat de film over?

“Post Fairy tale” wordt een film in 2 delen. In het eerste deel wordt een Duits sprookje verbeeld; het tweede deel wordt in documentaire stijl gefilmd. Beide benaderingen worden tenslotte vervlochten tot een intrigerend verhaal.

Dit project is een experimentele adaptatie van het beroemde sprookje van Hoffman 'Klein Zaches, genannt Zinnober' uit 1819.
Kleine Zaches is een grotesk en lelijk kind, dat door zijn moeder in de steek is gelaten. Een goede geest probeert hem mooi te maken, maar wanneer dat niet lukt voorziet de geest Zaches van magische haren, die hem aan anderen als mooi, intelligent en charmant laten voorkomen. Ondanks dat zijn transformatie een illusie is, groeit Zaches op tot een zelfingenomen en arrogant persoon. Zaches heeft zijn oog laten vallen op de jonge Candida. De voorzichtige Balthazar probeert haar te beschermen. Balthazar – dichter, romanticus en buitenstaander - breekt de magie door de haren van Zaches' hoofd te trekken tijdens zijn feestelijke verloving met Candida. Hiermee haalt hij de betovering van het misleidende voorkomen weg. Een voor een, ontdaan van hun blindheid, zien alle mensen, de ministers en Candida een gemene misvormde dwerg in plaats van hun geliefde Zaches.

Het documentaire deel van de film is een complex portret van een gebied en zijn inwoners. De regisseur - Lyuba Matyunina, die zelf is geboren in Kaliningrad - probeert te begrijpen in wat voor tijd de mensen van nu leven? Is er tegenwoordig nog plaats voor sprookjes?

Het team

Voor dit project word ik als regisseur bijgestaan door een klein doeltreffend team bestaand uit een supergetalenteerde cameraman, een ervaren geluidsman en een goed-georganiseerde uitvoerend producent.

Waar heb ik het geld voor nodig?

Om “Post Fairy” te kunnen maken heb ik jullie hulp nodig!
Om te beginnnen moet je natuurlijk in dit sprookje geloven. Maar jullie donaties zijn ook cruciaal!

De hier beschreven film bestaat uit een deel fictie en een deel documentair materiaal. Om dit project te kunnen realiseren heb ik technische ondersteuning en specifieke voorzieningen nodig.
Om het ‘sprookjesachtige’ deel te filmen, heb ik nodig:
- acteurs;
- kostuums (ik heb de eerste ontwerpschetsen al op papier);
- professionele belichting;
- geluidsapparatuur;
- transport;
- elektrische generator (voor filmen op afgelegen locaties)
- brandstof;

Hier noem ik slechts de belangrijkste elementen. Naast deze basisvereisten wil ik ervoor zorgen dat mijn crew een vergoeding krijgt voor hun deelname en dat alle betrokken medewerkers zich goed bejegend en gemotiveerd voelen.

Waar wordt de filmvertoond?

Na de première in Amsterdam wordt de film zo intensief mogelijk gepromoot. We gaan “Post Fairy tale” naar diverse filmfestivals in binnen- en buitenland sturen. Mijn vorige film “Who can be happy and free?” werd heel goed ontvangen en gooide in 2014/2015 hoge ogen in het filmfestival-circuit. Zo kreeg de film bijvoorbeeld de Tent academy publieks-award en werd opgenomen in de programmering van het Rotterdams filmfestival (IFFR). Dankzij het feit dat deze film 3 talen beslaat (Engels, Russisch, Duits) hebben we een bijzondere troef in handen om de film nog breder te kunnen verspreiden door middel van screenings in deze taalgebieden.

(Fairy tale of reality and the reality of the fairy tale)

I am an artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. I work primarily with the medium of moving image. In my artistic practice I aim at pushing the boundaries of traditional documentary filmmaking. In my previous film / installation “Who can be happy and free?”(2014) I experimented with various performative aspects, in order to add metaphorical depth to my subject. The current project “Post Fairy tale” (2016) is my new attempt to push the boundaries of the documentary genre.

Motivation

For me it is important to make film Post Fairy tale, because the theme of war and peace is getting more and more relevant day by day. Right now, during Christmas and New Years eve, at the time when belief in magic and miracles is reviving, I want to ask people what is the time in which we live in today? Is there is a place for fairy tales nowadays?

Inspiration and historical background

I was born in Kaliningrad (Russia) in 1985. Forty years earlier Kaliningrad did not exist. The city was called Königsberg (East Prussia) and it was a place where the German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann was born in 1776. We were born in the same land, but in different countries, because World war II has drawn a line between our realities. During the war two-thirds of the beautiful city was destroyed. On the ruins a new city and new culture was build. No wonder that new inhabitants felt very much alienated from the land. Between me and the German writer there are two centuries, different languages, ​​and different mentalities. Here the legacy of Immanuel Kant and Vladimir Lenin come together and overlap. The ports and ruins of the city, the bunkers and the German fortress coexist next to the Russian orthodox white-stone churches, Khrushchev panel buildings, and the contemporary post-soviet shopping malls. “Post Fairy tale” is the tale of the place, where the sea wind and sand dunes hide the secrets of the past; it is the strange and magical land - a Russian island in the European “sea”.

What the film is about?

“Post Fairy tale” film will consist of 2 parts: one is dedicated to experimental interpretation of German fairy tale and another part will be documentary. Afterwards two outcomes will be merged together into one intriguing story.

This project partly is a experimental adaptation of the famous fairy tale of Hoffmann "Klein Zaches, genannt Zinnober" (1819). Little Zaches is a grotesquely ugly child, abandoned by his repulsed mother. A kind spirit tries to make him beautiful but cannot; instead, the spirit provides Zaches with magic hairs that make others perceive him as handsome, intelligent, and charming. Zaches grows to be conceited and filled with self-importance, though his false transformation is only superficial. Zaches becomes interested in Candida, but the humble Balthasar is wooing her. Balthasar – poet, lover and outsider breaks the magic spell by breaking into the formal celebration of Candida’s betrothal to Zaches/Zinnober and ripping out his magic hairs, he undoes the spell of false perception. Unable to see before, one by one the guests, ministers and Candida herself now see that Zaches/Zinnober is nothing more than a vindictive, misshapen dwarf. The Prince, however, maintains the charade, and his servants are too afraid to believe in what they see.

Second ingredient of the film, is a documentary investigation. My guiding question is: “What are the times we live in?” and more specifically, “Is there a place for a fairy tale today?” . Documentary part of the project consists of interviews and documentary observation of everyday reality.

What do I need money for?

To be able to make“Post Fairy tale” I need your help!

First of all you also should believe in the fairy tale. But your donation sare vital as well!
This film as mentioned above includes fiction and documentary parts. For realization of the project I need technical support and specific arrangements.

To film a fairy tale part I need:
- actors;
- costumes (I have already started with designing and production);
- professional light;
- sound equipment;
- transport;
- electricity generator (for remote areas)
- fuel;

It’s just the list of the most important things. Besides this I want to make sure that my crew get fee for participation and all people involved in the production feel comfortable and motivated.

Where the film will be shown?

After the premiere in the Amsterdam we will promote the film as much as possible. We will send “Post Fairy tale” to various national and international film festivals. My previous film “Who can be happy and free?” have already done very well in the film festival circuit in 2014/2015; won Tent academy public choice award and was part of the Rotterdam film festival. Because 3 languages (English, Russian, German) are involved in the production by making this project unique we are aiming for even greater success with screenings where this languages are spoken.
