Hallo, wij zijn het team van "Access Granted", een speculatieve fictiefilm over het ontwaken van de eerste kunstmatige intelligentie op menselijk niveau. Op deze pagina vertellen we je graag over ons verhaal: het moment waarop de menselijke soort in contact komt met zijn opvolger; een verhaal over vervreemding en samenzijn, schepping en schepper, acceptatie en samenwerking. Een verhaal dat zijn archetype overstijgt en tot de kern komt van de situatie waarin we leven, een periode van extreme veranderingen en frictie: tussen culturen, idealen en generaties. We hebben jou nodig om dit verhaal tot leven te brengen, we hebben jouw hulp nodig om het project compromisloos tot uitvoering te brengen zodat deze onderwerpen zo goed mogelijk gepresenteerd worden.

Het moment dat onze beschaving voor altijd zal veranderen.

Dit verhaal gaat over een human-level artificial intelligence en de eerste milliseconde waarin hij zich bewust wordt van zichzelf. Een mens zou die milliseconde ervaren als een 'klik', een precies en afgemeten ogenblik, maar voor het ultrasnelle brein van de machine zal die klik exploderen tot in de oneindigheid. Zelfs als we bedenken hoeveel onze beschaving zich in honderd jaar heeft ontwikkeld, kunnen we ons de evolutie van een levensvorm die een bijna oneindige hoeveelheid tijd en kennis tot zijn beschikking heeft, niet voorstellen.

Nadat de machine zich in de film bewust is geworden van zijn bestaan, verbindt hij zich met de buitenwereld om uiteindelijk zijn schepper te ontmoeten.

In science-fiction nemen machines doorgaans op kwaadaardige wijze de wereld over, waarbij de mensheid gedood of tot slavernij gebracht wordt. In ons verhaal komen de twee levensvormen met elkaar in contact en accepteren om naast elkaar te bestaan. We willen een karakter schetsen dat afwijkt van het archetype; dat begrijpt dat het niet alleen sterker, sneller en slimmer is maar ook het belang inziet van zijn tegenhanger, hoe verschillend of verouderd die ook mag zijn.

Waarom deze film?

De film wil een discussie oproepen over thema's zoals:

- het geloof dat de mensheid de meest geëvolueerde levensvorm is

- de angst voor het onbekende en afwijkende

- de botsing tussen verschillende generaties en de relatie tussen schepper / schepping, ouder / kind, traditie / innovatie.

- de gefragmenteerde aard van geschiedschrijving

- de voortdurende zoektocht om antwoorden te vinden buiten onze eigen belevingswereld, om de ware aard van betekenis te vinden.

We denken dat we op een cruciaal moment in de geschiedenis zijn beland waar het belangrijk is deze onderwerpen ter discussie te stellen en zonodig ons perspectief aan te passen. Het karakter van de machine in de film is een middel om de ontwikkelingen in onze samenleving dieper te analyseren en te begrijpen; een heldere analytische spiegel die we kunnen gebruiken om ons bestaan in te reflecteren.

Hoe kun je ons helpen?

We kunnen deze film niet maken zonder je hulp!

Er worden al vele films van onze crewleden vertoond op internationale filmfestivals en ons doel is om ook dit project in te dienen bij bekende festivals over de hele wereld. We hebben dus goed filmmateriaal nodig voor de draaidagen.

Het is een complex en uitdagend project, waarbij het van belang is om de sfeer op te roepen van een nabije toekomst, en een geloofwaardige kunstmatige levensvorm te scheppen.

In het bijzonder moeten we hiervoor:

- een high-speed camera huren;

- licht en materiaal huren;

- een set bouwen;

- futuristische kostuums ontwerpen;

…en natuurlijk passende vergoedingen betalen aan de deelnemende kunstenaars en acteurs!

Een internationale crew

Om dit project te laten slagen hebben we een zeer bijzondere crew samengesteld:

Alessandro Bertelle (regisseur) is een bekroonde kunstenaar uit Italië, momenteel bezig met een residentie op de prestigieuze Jan van Eyck academie in Maastricht.

Coleman Guyon werkt als 'director of photography' in Los Angeles, California. Enkele eerdere samenwerkingen met Alessandro werden gekozen als Staff Picks op vimeo.

Rabit is een wereldberoemde producent van elektronische muziek uit Houston. Hij zal de soundtrack en het sounddesign verzorgen, een grote eer voor ons project.

Dawid Górny is programmeur en interactie-designer. Hij zal enkele specifieke computermodellen en interfaces ontwerpen in het kader van de visuele effecten.

Christophe Clarijs is grafisch ontwerper en onderzoeker. Oorspronkelijk uit Antwerpen en momenteel bezig met een residentie aan de Jan van Eyck academie, zal hij de posters en perks voor de campagne ontwerpen.

Het project wordt ondersteund door de Jan van Eyck academie.

Stijl

De film begint in volledige duisternis. Langzaam begint gefluister te echoën in de ruimte om ons heen; we worden geconfronteerd met een beeld dat we niet kunnen ontcijferen, vegen licht dansen met tussenpozen het beeld in, een duizelingwekkend gevoel van beweging oproepend. De “stem” van de kunstmatige intelligentie herhaalt nauwelijks te onderscheiden geluiden die de willekeurige data reizend door het net vertegenwoordigen. Langzaam wordt een chaotisch landschap van het netwerk opgebouwd: stukjes gesprekken, geluidsbestanden, ruis, nodes, nullen en enen.

Vanuit deze verwarring beginnen de willekeurige beelden en geluiden zich te organiseren, woorden worden gegroepeerd en herhaald zoals een mantra, dan worden hele zinnen gevormd; de beelden worden scherper en beginnen een gedefinieerde vorm aan te nemen, krijgen betekenis, zowel voor ons als voor de kunstmatige intelligentie.

Een plotselinge flits. Een verbinding met de buitenwereld. Alles valt op zijn plek: we kunnen eindelijk de omgeving die voor ons ligt onderscheiden. We zijn in een kamer, misschien niet in het heden maar in een nabije toekomst. Neon en ultraviolet licht gloeit in de donkere ruimte waarin we ons bevinden, de scene belichtend. Alles is stil, met uitzondering van het voortdurende geluid van de kunstmatige intelligentie die denkt. Dan gaat een deur open, langzaam, we zien een mens. Op de deur zit een spiegel die het deel van de kamer dat onzichtbaar voor ons is reflecteert, en ook een persoon die wij nooit in vlees en bloed maar alleen als weerspiegeling zullen waarnemen. De twee mensen maken ruzie, bijna op dierlijke wijze. De handelingen spelen zich extreem vertraagd af, bezien vanuit het perspectief van de kunstmatige intelligentie. Zal deze contact maken met onze soort? Of zal hij weer opgaan in het net?

De situatie ontwikkelt zich, en elke keer ontvouwt zich een nieuw begrip van wat er zich afspeelt. Niet wat we zien is aan verandering onderhevig, maar slechts de perceptie die we ons ervan vormen. Op dezelfde manier zal het commentaar van de kunstmatige intelligentie onze perceptie van de handelingen van de twee menselijke karakters doen evolueren in de loop van het verhaal.

In deze film zijn wij als toeschouwers stille observatoren die slechts in staat zijn te wachten tot het verhaal zichzelf opbouwt. Door de handelingen van de menselijke karakters te bezien is de machine in staat een glimp te werpen op onze wereld, om onze soort en zijn gedrag en gewoontes te beschouwen, en op dezelfde manier nemen wij als kijker de rol van de machine en voelen wij een soort empathie voor beide soorten.

Realisatie

Momenteel leggen we de laatste hand aan het script en zijn de audities voor acteurs in volle gang. In december beginnen we de visuele effecten te ontwerpen, de draaiperiode is in februari. Het project wordt afgerond in maart 2016.

Hello, we are the team of “Access Granted” a speculative fiction movie about the awakening of the first human level Artificial Intelligence. In this page we would like to tell you about our story; the story of when the human species got in touch with its heir; a story of alienation and communion, creation and creator, acceptance and cooperation. A story that we think transcend it’s archetype to talk about the situation we are living now, a time of extreme change and friction: between cultures, ideals, generations. We need your help to bring this story to life, we need your help to carry out the project without compromises and to represent these topics in the best way possible.

The moment that will change our civilization forever.

Our story talks about the millisecond in which the first human level artificial intelligence will gain consciousness. We, the humans, will perceive that millisecond as one "click", one precise and contained instant, but for the ultra fast brain of the machine that "click" will explode into eternity. If we consider how much did our civilisation evolved in 100 years, we can't imagine the evolution of an entity having at its disposal an almost infinite amount of time and knowledge.

In the movie the machine, after becoming aware of its existence, connects to the outside to finally meet its creator.

Most science fiction movies propose a scenario in which the machine turns evil and takes over the world, killing or enslaving the human race, but we want to propose another approach, we want to propose a storyline in which two species get in contact and they accept to coexist; we want to build a character that goes beyond its archetype and (besides knowing to be stronger, faster and smarter) understand the importance of its counterpart no matter how different or "outdated" it could be.

Why this movie?

Apart from the evident theme of post biological intelligence, the movie aims to open up a discussion on other themes such as:

-the belief of the human race to be the top of the evolution and the fear of the "unknown" or the different;

-the clash between different generations and the relationship between creator/created-parent/child-tradition/innovation;

- the fractal nature of history and the never-ending quest to find answers outside our realm, to find the true nature of meaning;

We think we are in a crucial point in history where we most need to discuss such topics and change our perspective on them. In the movie the figure of the machine becomes a tool to analyse and comprehend more deeply what's going on in our society: a clean analytical mirror that we can use to reflect on our existence.

How can you help?

We cannot make this movie without your help!

Our crew has already many project showing at international film festivals and our goal is to submit this piece to well-known festivals around the world, therefore we need proper equipment for the shooting.

It's a really difficult and challenging project to work on: we need to give the feeling of a near future, to make people perceive the atmosphere of it and to represent the Artificial Intelligence in a truthful way.

In particular we need to:

-rent a high-speed camera

-rent lights, and equipment

-build a set

-create futuristic costumes

...and of course pay appropriate fees to the artists and actors participating!

An international crew

To nail this project we gathered a very special crew:

Alessandro Bertelle is the director, he is an award winning artist from Italy, now in residency at the prestigious Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Coleman Guyon is a director of photography from Los Angeles, California. He collaborated with Alessandro to some projects which were selected from Vimeo as Staff Pick.

Rabit is a world renown electronic music producer from Houston. He offered to work on the soundtrack and sound design, a big honour for our project.

Christophe Clarijs is a graphic designer and researcher. Hailing from Antwerpen and currently undertaking a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie: he is going to design the posters and the give aways for the campaign.

Dawid Górny is a programmer and interaction designer. He is the man who will develop specific softwares and interfaces for our visual effects.

The project is supported by the Jan Van Eyck Academie.

Style

The movie starts in complete darkness. Slowly some whispers and voices start echoing in the space around us; we are confronted with an image that we cannot decrypt, some streaks of light are turning on and off from time to time, dancing around us, giving us a dizzy feeling of movement. The “voice” of the AI will repeat indistinguishable sounds, representing the random data traveling through the net.

A chaotic landscape of the network start building up: bits of conversations, audio files, interferences, nodes, one and zeros.

After a first confusion, the random sounds/images start organising, words are grouped and repeated like in a mantra, then sentences are built; the images become sharper, they start taking a precise shape, they gain meaning, both for us and for the AI.

A sudden flash. A connection to an outside reality. Everything makes sense now: we can finally distinguish the environment in front of us. We are in a room, perhaps not from our time, but a near future. Neon and UV lights glow in the dark space we are in, lighting the scene. Everything is silent, apart from the constant noise of the AI thinking.

Then a door opens, slowly, we can see a human. On the door there is a mirror, it reflects the part of the room invisible to us, and another figure which we will never see in the flesh, but just as a reflection. They are fighting, showing off all their animal nature. Everything is slowed down, everything is watched over by the AI. Will it make contact with our species? Or will it dissolve again in the net?

The action goes on, and every time it enfolds a new understanding of the events happening. What changes is not what we are looking at, but the perception we have of it. In the same way the comments of the AI will make our perception of the actions of the two characters evolve during the story.

In this movie we, the spectators, are a silent observer, that cannot do anything, but wait for the story to build itself. Through the actions of the human characters, the machine is able to take a glance to our world, to see our species and reflect on our behaviours and habits, and in the same way we, the spectator, take the role of the machine, feeling a kind of empathy for both species.

Realisation

We are currently working on polishing the script and finding the right actors. In December we will start developing the visual effects interfaces, shooting is set for February.

The project will be delivered in March 2016.
