LLECA, a Dutch-Nicaraguan theatre collective, has made theatre in prison for close to six years. This year we have the unique opportunity to – for the first time! – take the prison theatre group on tour outside prison!! This means that we are looking for more funding than usual, so that we can attract a wide audience to the performances, and really make the tour an unforgettable experience for our prisoner-actors.
This effort is moreover part of a larger endeavour to move ‘Beyond Bars’ and calls for reflection and action against (ex-)prisoner discrimination and stigmatization.

At the moment, in Nicaragua, recognized theatre director Mick Sarria is training and co-creating the production of “Paradiso” with the Leonese prisoner-actor group. The play intends to be a theatrical reworking of Dante d’Alghieri’s poetic “Il Paradiso” into a physical dialogue – engaging especially with the complex issue of guilt. It is the last part of the Dante trilogy "La Divina Commedia" that Lleca has been working on since 2013. It is very important for us that exactly this last part of the trilogy, paradoxically “Paradiso”, be created and performed by our prison theatre group. The play provides a key opportunity to blur the boundaries between innocent and guilty, right and wrong, mercy and retaliation. In our training, creative process & performances we emphasize humanity, emotion and affect through the exhaustive use of the human body as a critique of these oppositions so often reinforced through the social-legal order.

After the experience of “Paradiso” we want to leave the audience with the sour taste of reality. For, what is “paradise” to us? As they go back to their cells, back behind bars, do we really feel relieved? Does their exclusion constitute our “paradise”? Or do we go back to our own “cells” too?

Concretely, the money we raise through this crowdfunder will be spent 50% on the play’s production costs (scenography; décor; materials) and 50% on the play’s tour (promotion material; bus rent and gasoline). The tour will start in the last week of September 2015 and run through to November 2015.

LLECA is een Nederlands-Nicaraguaans theatercollectief dat al zes jaar theater maakt met gevangenen in Nicaragua. Dit jaar hebben we, voor het eerst, de unieke kans om de toneelgroep van de gevangenis buiten de gevangenis te laten optreden en zelfs op verschillende locaties! Dit betekent dat we meer steun dan gewoonlijk nodig hebben om publiek te trekken, te touren en er voor de gevangenen-acteurs een bijzondere ervaring van te maken! Bovendien zijn deze productie en tour onderdeel van een groter streven om 'Beyond Bars' te werken, oproepend tot reflectie en totactie tegen discriminatie en stigmatisering van (ex-)gevangenen.
Op dit moment is theaterregisseur Mick Sarria in Nicaragua tezamen met onze gevangenistoneelgroep in León bezig met het creëren van de "Paradiso"-productie. Mick bewerkt hiertoe met hen Dante's poëtische "Il Paradiso" tot een fysieke dialoog, die zich vooral richt op de complexiteit van het thema schuld'. "Paradiso" is het laatste deel van Dante's drie-delige epos "La Divina Commedia", dat Lleca sinds 2013 op de planken brengt.

Het is voor ons heel belangrijk dat dit laatste deel van de trilogie, paradoxaal genoeg "het Paradijs", juist door de gevangenistoneelgroep gecreëerd en uitgevoerd wordt. Het stuk biedt hen de mogelijkheid om de grenzen tussen onschuld en schuld, goed en fout, genade en wraak te vervagen. Tijdens onze training, het creatieve proces en de uitvoeringen leggen we de nadruk op menselijkheid, emotie en affectie door het uitputtend gebruik van het menselijk lichaam om deze tegenstellingen, die zo vaak door de sociaal-legale orde worden versterkt, te bekritiseren.

Na de ervaring van "Paradiso" willen we het publiek achterlaten met de bittere smaak van de werkelijkheid. Want wat betekent 'paradijs' voor ons? Voelen wij ons, terwijl zij teruggaan naar hun cel, terug achter de tralies, werkelijk opgelucht? Vormt hun uitsluiting ons 'paradijs'? Of gaan ook wij eigenlijk terug naar onze eigen 'cel'?

Concreet gesproken zal het geld, dat we middels deze crowdfunder ophalen, voor 50% worden uitgegeven aan de scenografie van het stuk: decor, kleding en techniek. De overige 50% wordt aan de 15-daagse tour uitgegeven: huur van de bus, benzine en promotiemateriaal. De tour zal plaatsvinden tussen eind september en eind november 2015.
