The Schatjes Gallery

We’re setting up an art gallery in the red light district of Amsterdam. But why? And how? And why though? We’ll get to that later, but first: a word on ‘prettyniceness’.

“Pretty Nice is the New Awesome”

We, Laurens and Thijs, have been advocating prettyniceness since 2010. In a nutshell it means: let’s celebrate mediocrity! In a couple more nutshells it means: not aiming too high is good, but even if you do dream big, and play hard, and only compete with the best: enjoy your mistakes and embrace the imperfections, dude!

You see, we believe that every breathing thing is confronted with frustrating differences between expectation and outcome; between hoped result and reality. While it is commendable to try and be the best there is, and to aspire to greatness – what if you end up with a great mess? It can really get you down, that’s what. And it happens all the time! So let’s enjoy that mess, is our motto (one of them).

That’s why – hipster alert! – we started a t-shirt label in 2010 called pretty nice shirts. Our designs aren’t really nice, and it’s impossible to do a great job on our wobbly, handmade silkscreens, but all of that is okay.

In 2013, we built a pretty big pretty nice shirt from scraps of fabric. So big, in fact, that you could walk around inside of it. We also invited a bunch of people to come and paint it, and the results were truly… myeh.

The Schatjes Gallery (Continued)

It’s time to take the next step as crusaders of the mediocre. We’re renting a basement space on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam, in the middle of the red light district. The plan is to set up a gallery there called ‘Schatjes’, which means ‘little treasures’, or ‘sweeties’, or, sarcastically: ‘not such sweeties after all’. Why Schatjes? Great question. Multiple reasons:

• It’s going to be a space full of little treasures that people can take home for a small fee.
• The house above the basement used to be the home of Peter Schat, an eccentric and experimental composer.
• The basement itself was used in the sixties by the Provo movement. Check ‘em out. Total schatjes.
• There’s one or two more reasons that we forgot.

As you can see, the name is perfect. No better place on this planet to host a pretty nice exhibition!

The Exhibition: For What It’s Worth

We are currently in the possession of about 25 artworks from a wide range of artists that portray prettyniceness in its truest form, each one telling a different story. In fact, the way we found all these pieces is so crazy and absurd, it’s a story in itself: one that we'd also love to share with you at the exhibition.

We want to officially open our doors in the weekend of August 28th/29th/30th. The exhibition will be titled For What It’s Worth, and will ponder questions ranging from the straightforward (“Is this art?”) to the pretentious (“Is this art?”) to many questions in between.

Take a gander at this self portrait for example, “FML” by Robert Dovedance.

In his work, Dovedance (1968) incorporates themes of loneliness and depression in a way that navigates a fine line between literal and metaphorical. This self portrait clearly demonstrates that dichotomy, and raises a number of questions. Did Dovedance really vacation alone on Easter Island? And was it actually raining, or did that only occur in his head? And what’s the matter, exactly? Isn’t Easter Island supposed to be a wonderful place?

These questions aptly touch upon the unfathomable and fleeting aspects of his work: before the viewer receives any answers, Dovedance has already taken his foul mood to a different exotic location.

To tell Robert’s story, and many others like his, we’re going to need monay. Moolah. Cashish. Right now, we have this much money: €0,=. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to set up For What It's Worth with.

Galerie Schatjes

We beginnen een galerie midden op de wallen in Amsterdam. Maar waarom? En hoe dan? En waarom? Daar komen we zo op terug, maar eerst even iets over _"prettyniceness."_

Wij, Laurens en Thijs, promoten sinds 2010 het concept van prettyniceness. In een notendop betekent dat: laten we middelmatigheid vieren! In nog een paar notendoppen betekent het: niet te hoog mikken is goed, maar zelfs als je groot durft te dromen, en alles geeft, en jezelf alleen met de besten wilt meten: probeer je fouten in perspectief te plaatsen en accepteer imperfecties, ouwe!

Wij geloven dat elk ademend wezen geconfronteerd wordt met de frustrerende verschillen tussen verwachting en uitkomst; tussen gehoopt resultaat en de realiteit. Hoewel het bewonderenswaardig is om je allerbest te doen, en de lat hoog te leggen: wat als je tegen die lat aanknalt met je ambitieuze koppie? Dat kan pijn doen. En het overkomt iedereen! Dus: niet zo heel erg excellent zijn is ook best okee, is ons motto. (Één van onze motto’s).

Om deze reden – wee wuu wee wuu, hipster alarm – begonnen we in 2010 een t-shirt label: pretty nice shirts. Onze designs zijn niet really nice, en het is onmogelijk om heel goed werk af te leveren op onze gammele, handgemaakte zeefdrukramen, maar dat is allemaal prima.

In 2013 maakten we een pretty big shirt van heel veel kleine stukjes textiel. Het shirt was zo groot dat je erin rond kon lopen! We nodigden een groep mensen uit om het te beschilderen, en de resultaten waren werkelijk… resultaten.

Galerie Schatjes (Vervolg)

Het is tijd voor onze volgende stap als kruisvaarders van de middelmatigheid. Op het moment huren we een souterrain op de Oudezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam, midden in de rosse buurt. Het plan is om daar een galerie te beginnen: Schatjes. Waarom ‘Schatjes’? Topvraag. Meerdere redenen:

• Het wordt een ruimte vol met ‘kleine schatten’ die men voor een vriendelijk prijsje mee naar huis mag nemen.
• In het huis boven de ruimte woonde Peter Schat, een excentrieke en experimentele componist.
• Het souterrain zelf werd in de jaren zestig gebruikt door de Provo beweging. Dat waren echte lieverdjes!
• Er zijn nog één of twee redenen die we even vergeten zijn.

Zoals je ziet is de naam perfect. Er is natuurlijk geen betere plek op aarde om een pretty nice expositie te organizeren!

De Expositie: For What It’s Worth

We bezitten momenteel een stuk of 25 kunstobjecten van een grote verscheidenheid aan kunstenaars die prettyniceness vertegenwoordigen, met achter elk werk een opzienbarende geschiedenis. Bovendien is de manier waarop we deze werken zijn bekomen in zichzelf ook een absurd verhaal, dat we graag met jullie delen bij de expositie.

We willen onze deuren officiëel openen in het weekend van 28/29/30 augustus. De expositie zal “For What It’s Worth” heten, en vragen oproepen die variëren van recht-door-zee (“Is dit kunst?”) tot pretentieus (“Is dit kunst?”) en alles daar tussenin.

Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens naar dit zelfportret, “FML” van Robert Dovedance.

Dovedance (1968) behandelt in zijn werk thema’s van eenzaamheid en depressie op een manier die het midden houdt tussen letterlijk en metaforisch. Dit werk toont die ambiguïteit goed, en werpt een aantal vragen op. Bevond Dovedance zich bijvoorbeeld werkelijk ooit zielsalleen op Paaseiland? En regende het toen, of gebeurde dat alleen in zijn hoofd? En wat scheelt er nu precies aan, Paaseiland zou toch prachtig moeten zijn? Na het stellen van deze vragen wordt de kijker ook met het vergankelijke aspect van zijn oeuvre geconfronteerd: voordat we antwoord krijgen heeft Dovedance zijn vuige humeur alweer meegenomen naar een nieuwe exotische locatie.

Om Robert’s verhaal (en vele andere verhalen) te kunnen vertellen hebben we centjes nodig. Op dit moment hebben we dit: €0,-. Dat is helaas niet genoeg om For What It's Worth mee te organizeren.
