My installation artwork has been selected to participate in the exhibition “Personal Structures", which is a part of the Venice Biennale 2015.

Ik ben Maartje Blans en mijn werk is geselecteerd voor de toonaangevende expositie “Personal Structures”, als onderdeel van de Venetië Biënnale 2015. Dit is een van de belangrijkste internationale manifestaties voor hedendaagse kunst. Voor deze tentoonstelling zal ik een nieuwe grote installatie maken voor een specifieke ruimte in het prachtige en monumentale 15e-eeuwse Palazzo Bembo, die te bezichtigen zal zijn van 9 mei tot 22 november 2015. Hiermee kan ik een breed en groot internationaal publiek raken, ca. 100.000 bezoekers, onder wie curatoren en directeuren van veel relevante galerieën en musea, leden van verschillende koningshuizen, politici en vele anderen. Tijdens eerdere Venetië Biënnales namen bekende kunstenaars als Herman de Vries, Abramović, Yoko Ono en Lee Ufan deel aan “Personal Structures”.

De expositie “Personal Structures” heeft als thema ‘Time-Space-Existence’ – begrippen die sterk raken aan mijn werk. Mijn speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling ontworpen installatie “Fugace” (Vergankelijkheid) zal spelen met licht, schaduw, transparantie, lijn, ruimte en leegte. Door de interactie tussen deze elementen wordt de beschouwer steeds meer in het werk getrokken en uitgenodigd om de diepere lagen van het kunstwerk en de relatie met de zaal, tijd, ruimte en bestaan te verkennen. “Personal Structures” biedt een fantastisch platform voor mijn werk, zowel inhoudelijk als qua bereik. Door deel te nemen aan deze expositie kan ik nieuwe kansen voor internationale samenwerking creëren en een enorme impuls aan mijn carrière geven.

Het bijzondere aan Venetië is voor mij ook de diepe gelaagdheid in de stad zelf: de historische setting en het vervallen uiterlijk, die sterk raken aan de thematiek van mijn werk, namelijk mijn fascinatie voor vergankelijkheid, schoonheid, verval en tijdelijkheid. Het is daarom al heel lang een grote wens om juist in Venetië met mijn “Fleeting” werk, waarvan “Fugace” een voorbeeld zal zijn, te exposeren en in deze setting mensen met mijn werk te raken.

Aan een project als dit zijn altijd hoge kosten verbonden, zoals voor materiaal, transport naar Italië, verzekering, locatie, belichting, PR en dergelijke. De totale kosten van het project bedragen circa 30.000 Euro. Hiervan draag ik een groot deel zelf en heb ik een deel gedekt met financiering uit andere bronnen. Het resterende bedrag van 18.000 Euro, dat nodig is om het project te realiseren, wil ik door middel van crowdfunding ophalen. Hiervoor heb ik jouw bijdrage hard nodig. Als blijk van dank bied ik je een uniek aandenken en zo word je deelgenoot van dit prachtige project.

Natuurlijk ben je ook van harte welkom om tussen mei en november 2015 in Venetië naar mijn nieuwe werk te komen kijken.

I’m Maartje Blans and I have been invited to participate in the authoritative exhibition “Personal Structures”, which is a part  of the Venice Biennale 2015. This is one of the most important international events for contemporary art. For this exhibition I will make a new large installation for a specific space in the splendid and monumental 15th century Palazzo Bembo, which can be visited from May 9th up to November 22nd 2015. Through this exhibition I will reach a broad and large international public of approximately 100,000 visitors, including curators, directors of museums, prominent galeries, royals and politicians. During previous Venice Biennales internationally renowned artists such as Herman de Vries, Abramović, Yoko Ono and Lee Ufan were part of “Personal Structures”.

The central topic of the “Personal Structures” exhibition is ‘Time-Space-Existence’ – concepts that strongly relate to my work. The installation that I have devised especially for this exhibition will play with light, shadow, transparency, lines, space and emptiness. Through the interaction between these elements the viewer is drawn more and more into the work and is invited to explore the deeper layers of this work of art and its relation with the room, time, space and existence. The “Personal Structures” exhibition provides a fantastic platform for my work, both in terms of substance and its reach to a broad group of relevant audiences. By participating in this exhibition I will be able to create new opportunities for international collaboration and provide a strong impulse to my career.

What also makes Venice special to me is the deep stratification of the city itself: the historical setting and rundown looks, which strongly touch upon the themes of my work, namely my fascination for transitoriness, beauty, decay and temporariness. For this reason it has long been my great wish to exhibit my “Fleeting” work, of which “Fugace” will be an example,specifically in Venice.

A project such as this inevitably entails a lot of expenses, such as for materials, transportation, location, insurance, PR and such. The total costs of the project are about 30,000 Euro. I will carry a large part of these costs myself and have part of the cost covered by other sources of finance. The remaining 18,000 Euro that is necessary to realise the project I intend to raise via crowdfunding. For this I will very much need your support.
