WIE BEN IK?

Hoi! Mijn naam is Medina Sharapova en ik ben een autodidact scenarioschrijver en filmregisseur.

Mijn eerdere werk ging over thema’s als depressie, eenzaamheid, en gevoel van "niet goed genoeg zijn", bijvoorbeeld Chasing a Dream (2021) en Blue Angel (2022). Maar tegelijkertijd probeer ik altijd mijn werken een "feel good" vibe te geven, ook al gaan de verhalen om ongemakkelijke thema's.

Echter, het scenario voor mijn 5e korte film, dat mij zeer dierbaar is, is wat donkerder en meer experimenteel, omdat het nauw aansluit bij de realiteit van de wereld waarin we leven. Met name, dit duistere verhaal onderzoekt de verslechtering van de geestelijke gezondheid van de jonge mensen als gevolg van voortdurende vergelijking van ons eigen leven met onrealistische normen, opgelegd door tal van influencers en opinieleiders.

Blijft er nog iets over dat ook maar enigszins lijkt op vrije wil? En hoeveel daarvan hangt nog van ons af?

DE FILM

De personage FANNY (23) is geobsedeerd door een vrouwelijke influencer, CLEO (28), en volgt CLEO's socialmediakanaal 24/7 op haar smartphone. Natuurlijk staat CLEO's socialmediapagina vol met jaloersmakende foto's van exotische vakanties, luxe auto's, exclusieve evenementen en privéjachtfeesten.

Als gevolg hiervan begint FANNY haar eigen normale leven te vergelijken met het glanzende leven van CLEO. Omdat ze niet genoeg redenen vindt om blij te zijn met haar levensomstandigheden, begint FANNY de producten (die strategisch op de markt worden gebracht door CLEO als geluk bevorderend) excessief te consumeren: een huidverzorgingslijn, een reality-tv-show, een podcast, tijdschriften, enzovoort.

FANNY is zo bezeten door het idee van hoe haar leven zou kunnen zijn als ze iemand anders was dat ze langzaam, onbewust, begint het gedrag van haar idool na te bootsen. Uiteindelijk neemt het verhaal een duistere wende wanneer FANNY de grens overschrijdt tussen wat echt is en wat niet.

Help mee om "FOLLOW ME" tot leven te brengen. Steun de productie van deze korte film om de dialoog over sociale media en geestelijke gezondheid op gang te brengen!

Volgens het CBS zijn de psychische klachten onder de jonge mensen in de afgelopen 4 jaar met ongeveer 10% toegenomen (Artikel: Mentale gezondheid jongeren afgenomen 2022, CBS). Er zijn meerdere onderzoeken gedaan waaruit blijkt dat het gebruik van sociale media daarbij een grote rol speelt. Bewustere gebruik van sociale media is dus van groot belang om de potentieel negatieve invloeden daarvan beperkt te houden.

Voor mij is dit de eerste keer dat ik crowdfund, aangezien dat 4 van mijn eerdere korte films 100% door mijzelf gefinancierde passieprojecten waren. Toffe ervaringen en heel veel geleerd!

Nu dat ik een beter grip op (pre-)productie en montage heb, ben ik me meer dan ooit bewust dat bepaalde vaardigheden gespecialiseerde kennis vereisen die niet gemakkelijk gerepliceerd kunnen worden zonder geld.

Hiermee bedoel ik voornamelijk filmverlichting, en we hebben echt financiële steun nodig om de productiewaarde van de film een niveau hoger te tillen en écht die volle potentie te bereiken, om uiteindelijk dit project te laten schitteren (met een knipoog).

Short film "FOLLOW ME"

MIND BEHIND THE PROJECT

Hey there! My name is Medina Sharapova and I am a self-taught screenwriter and film director.

My previous works addressed such topics as depression, loneliness, and the feeling of being "not enough", e.g. Chasing a Dream (2021) and Blue Angel (2022). At the same time, I always aim for maintaining a lighter, "feel good" vibe in my films even when the stories revolve around a difficult subject.

This script, however, is a much darker and much more experimental type of a narrative. It's my 5th short film and it's very important to me because it will be the first time producing a film where art closely imitates life and realistically portrays the realities of the world we live in. The story looks into the worsening of mental health of young people, as a consequence of comparing one's own life against unrealistic standards of life, imposed onto us by a myriad of influencers and opinion-makers, that overflow the social media space.

Can we still speak of free will in such cases? And how much of it is still up to us?

THE FILM

Main character FANNY (23) is obsessed with a female influencer, CLEO (28), whom she follows on her social media channels 24/7. Naturally, CLEO's social media pages are filled with envy-enducing pictures of exotic holidays, luxury cars, exclusive events and private yacht parties.

Consequently, FANNY starts to compare her own, normal life to the glossy life of CLEO. When FANNY fails to find reasons to be happy with her life circumstances, she starts to excessively consume the products sold under CLEO's brand (strategically marketed as happiness-enducing) such as skin-care line, a reality TV show, a podcast, magazines, etc.

FANNY is consumed by the idea that her life would be much happier if she was someone else. This leads to a slow, unconscious change in FANNY's behaviour where she begins to imitate her idol. Here the story takes a dark turn as FANNY crosses the line between what is real and what's not.

According to the statistics (NL-related), mental health issues amongst young people have risen with approximately 10% in the past 4 years (Article: Mentale gezondheid jongeren afgenomen 2022, CBS). Further researches show an undeniable link between the use of the social media and the worsening of mental health. Hence, conscious use of the social media is of major importance to negate its negative influence on mental wellbeing.

This is the first time I am crowdfunding as 4 of my previous short films have been 100% self-funded. All of them taught me a lot and were generally speaking amazing learning experinces.

However, now that I have a better grip on (pre-)production and editing, I am also much more aware that some aspects of filmmaking will inevitably require more budget.

Hereby I mostly refer to film lighting, and we truly need financial support to afford the services of a gaffer to help lift the production value of this film, and to let this project shine (pun intended).
