INTROCUCTION

I work under the name SOH Alex Vermeulen. I experiment with hybrids of a wide range of media, including photography, film books, films, performances, theatre, sculptures and installations. I am also the founder of the Syndicaat Foundation. This foundation focuses on encouraging and supporting the arts in the broadest sense of the word by initiating, directing and producing internationally executed projects. SOH is an abbreviation for States Of Humanity, the brand name under which the Syndicaat Foundation realises projects.

2015-2018, I worked with my team on the project "The Epic", a series of 32 staged photographs in which Balinese children depict a story loosely inspired by the Hindu epic the Ramayana and Shakespeare's Othello. Costume designer Rien Bekkers designed the costumes inspired by both stories. It would be a travelling exhibition of the series of photos and costumes.

Ik werk onder de naam SOH Alex Vermeulen. Ik experimenteer met hybriden van een breed scala aan media, waaronder fotografie, filmboeken, films, performance, theater, sculpturen en installaties. Tevens ben ik oprichter van Stichting Syndicaat, een stichting die zich richt op het stimuleren en ondersteunen van de kunsten in de breedste zin van het woord door het initiëren, regisseren en produceren van internationaal uitgevoerde projecten. SOH is een afkorting voor States Of Humanity, de merknaam waaronder Stichting Syndicaat projecten realiseert.

Van 2015-2018 werkte ik met mijn team aan het project "The Epic", een serie van 32 geënsceneerde foto's waarin Balinese kinderen een verhaal uitbeelden dat losjes geïnspireerd is op het Hindoe-epos de Ramayana en Shakespeare's Othello. Kostuumontwerper Rien Bekkers ontwierp de kostuums geïnspireerd op beide verhalen. het zou een reizende tentoonstelling worden van de reeks foto's en kostuums.

THE EPIC

The story of 'The Epic' takes place in the futuristic metropolis of Raksasa Kota, in the year 2088. As in the original stories, it encompasses a diverse cast of characters, including animals, humans, gods, and demons. Within this narrative tapestry, human emotions come to life, ranging from love and hatred to sacrifice, jealousy, nobility, betrayal, murder, and hope. All of this takes the audience on an enchanting, sensual, and thrilling journey through the plot. 'The Epic' offers a fusion of East and West.

Both stories have a historical setting. In 'The Epic,' children take centre stage in a retro-futuristic context, conveying the message that children represent the future.

Het verhaal van 'The Epic' speelt zich af in de futuristische metropool Raksasa Kota, in het jaar 2088. Net als in de originele verhalen omvat het een uiteenlopende cast van personages, waaronder dieren, mensen, goden en demonen. Binnen dit verhalende weefsel komen menselijke emoties tot leven, variërend van liefde en haat tot opoffering, jaloezie, nobelheid, verraad, moord en hoop. Dit alles neemt het publiek mee op een betoverende, sensuele en opwindende reis door het plot. 'The Epic' is samensmelting van Oost en West.

Beide verhalen hebben een historische setting. In 'The Epic' spelen kinderen de hoofdrollen in een retro-futuristische context, waarbij de boodschap luidt dat kinderen de toekomst vertegenwoordigen.

CHARACTERS /KARAKTERS

In The Epic, East and West come together in an ingenious blend, where the universal essence of the characters aligns with the original stories. This results in a unique sense of wonder.

While Othello takes place in a realistic setting, notably Venice, the Ramayana unfolds in a fictional world populated by gods, demons, and mythical creatures. My research into the characters and the meaning of their names, translated into Esperanto, resulted in unique names:

For example:
Cefo Abadan (prosperous leader): Othello (prosperous philanthropist) - Rama (blissful philanthropist).
Kondamnita Sanculpeca (doomed innocent): Desdemona (unfortunate) - Sita (pure).
Patro (father): Brabantio - Janaka (progenitor).
Diabloso Plori (weeping devil): Iago (oppressor) - Ravana (the one who makes you weep).
And so the characters' traits are characterised in their names:

Cefo. Although he had concern for mankind and wanted to contribute to the welfare of all with his inventions, he was not apt to trust people. That was the paradoxical aspect of his character: he wanted to serve humanity and yet basically trusted no one at all

Kondamnita radiates with unwavering affection and devotion to her spouse, epitomising boundless love and purity at the core of her existence.

Patro: who had chosen to lead a solitary existence. Serenity suited him: no needless words, no pointless conversations—a simple life, a life free of interaction with restless mankind.

Diablosso, the villain who created a conspiracy. He has feigned Kondanita's infidelity to her husband and fueled Cefo's distrust.

In this way, the characters were created based on both stories and their roles in relation to each other.

In The Epic komen Oost en West op een ingenieuze mengeling samen, waarbij de universele essentie van de personages in lijn is met de oorspronkelijke verhalen. Dit resulteert in een bijzondere gevoel van verwondering.

Terwijl Othello zich afspeelt in een realistische setting, met name Venetië, ontvouwt de Ramayana zich in een fictieve wereld bevolkt door goden, demonen en mythische wezens. Mijn onderzoek naar de personages en de betekenis van hun namen, vertaald in het Esperanto, resulteerde in unieke namen:

Cefo: Hoewel hij begaan is met de mensheid en met zijn uitvindingen wilde bijdragen aan het welzijn van iedereen, is hij niet geneigd mensen te vertrouwen. Dat is het paradoxale aspect van zijn karakter: hij wil de mensheid dienen en toch vertrouwt hij eigenlijk helemaal niemand

Kondamnita straalt onwankelbare genegenheid en toewijding uit jegens haar echtgenoot, waarbij onbegrensde liefde en zuiverheid het middelpunt van haar bestaan belichamen.

Patro: die ervoor had gekozen een eenzaam bestaan te leiden. Sereniteit paste bij hem: geen onnodige woorden, geen zinloze gesprekken – een eenvoudig leven, een leven vrij van interactie met de rusteloze mensheid. Totaal onverwacht komt aan deze levenswijze een einde.

Diablosso, de slechterik, die een samenzwering heeft opgezet. Hij heeft de ontrouw van Kondanita naar haar man voorgewend en het wantrouwen van Cefo aangewakkerd.

Op deze manier ontstonden de personages, gebaseerd op beide verhalen en hun rollen in relatie tot elkaar.

THE ENCOUNTER - DE ONTMOETING

Othello:
While visiting the house of Brabantio (Patro), an important senator in Venice, he meets Brabantio's daughter, Desdemona (Kondamnita Sanculpeca). Desdemona is fascinated by Othello's stories about his life and the war, and her compassion leads her to fall in love with him.)

Ramayana:
As soon as Rama rests his eyes on the lovely Sita, he spontaneously falls deeply and madly in love with her. They are soul mates in every sense of the term. Their attraction is divine, and they have somehow found each other in this material world.

In the Epic, we follow Othello's meeting with Desdemona. In other episodes, we continue according to the Ramayana. This way, both stories blend.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it seems crucial to me that stories that encompass both the cultural aspects of the East and the West and harmoniously bring them together in one narrative should be accessible to a broad audience.

Othello:
Tijdens een bezoek aan het huis van Brabantio (Patro), een belangrijke senator in Venetië, ontmoet hij Brabantio's dochter, Desdemona (Kondamnita Sanculpeca). Desdemona is gefascineerd door Othello's verhalen over zijn leven en de oorlog, en haar medeleven leidt ertoe dat ze verliefd op hem wordt.

Ramayana:
Zodra Rama zijn blik op de lieftallige Sita richt, wordt hij spontaan hevig en smoorverliefd op haar. Ze zijn zielsverwanten in elke betekenis van het woord. Hun aantrekkingskracht is goddelijk en ze hebben elkaar op de een of andere manier gevonden in deze materiële wereld.

In The Epic volgen we Othello's ontmoeting met Desdemona. In andere afleveringen gaan we verder volgens de Ramayana. Zo lopen beide verhalen in elkaar over.

Nu de wereld steeds meer met elkaar verbonden is, lijkt het me cruciaal dat verhalen die zowel de culturele aspecten van het Oosten als het Westen omvatten en harmonieus samenbrengen in één verhaal, toegankelijk voor een breed publiek.

NEVER GIVE UP

The "THE EPIC" project has had several interruptions and setbacks. It was initially an exhibition of 32 significant photographic works and detailed costumes. Particularly during COVID, the entire exhibition tour was first postponed and later cancelled. As a result of an accident, I was in danger of going blind, and several surgeries caused stagnation for two years.
The exhibition is off. If one version doesn't work, go for another: NEVER GIVE UP!!

Het project "THE EPIC" heeft verschillende onderbrekingen en tegenslagen gehad. Het was oorspronkelijk een tentoonstelling van grote fotowerken en de gedetailleerde kostuums. Met name tijdens Covid is het hele tentoonstellingstournee eerst uitgesteld en later afgelast. Als gevolg van een ongeluk dreigde ik blind te worden, diverse operaties hebben voor twee jaar stagnatie gezorgd.
De tentoonstelling is van de baan. Als de ene uitvoering niet werkt, ga voor een andere: NEVER GIVE UP!!

INTERACTIVE DIGITAL BOOK

If art does not reach an audience, it's akin to a lifeless body in a casket.
The decision was made quickly: we converted it into an interactive digital book accessible online to a global audience. I created a lot of new photos. The large amount of footage from the photoshoot is processed into an animated film, complete with music and voice-over.
It is my responsibility to my dedicated team that the project is launched. I promised the kids they would be a movie star. A promise I cannot break!

Als kunst geen publiek bereikt, is het als een lijk in een kistje.
De beslissing viel snel: we hebben het omgezet in een interactief digitaal boek online bereikbaar voor een wereldwijd publiek. Ik heb veel nieuwe foto's gecreëerd. De grote hoeveel beeldmateriaal van de photoshoot is verwerkt in een animatiefilm, compleet met muziek en voice over.
Het is mijn verantwoordelijkheid naar mijn toegewijd team dat het project gelanceerd wordt. Ik heb de kinderen beloofd dat ze een filmster zouden worden. Een belofte die ik niet kan breken!

THE EPIC - NEW SHAPE

The digital book "The Epic" is composed of a story combined with 102 photo works. In addition to the visual richness, the book includes a range of content, including a three-episode video animation mini series, the documentary 'The Epic Behind the Scenes' and the official trailer.

Het digitale boek "The Epic" is samengesteld uit het verhaal samengevoegd met 102 fotowerken. Naast de visuele rijkdom omvat het boek een scala aan inhoud, waaronder een driedelige video-animatie-serie, de documentaire 'The Epic Behind the Scenes' en de officiële trailer.

PREMIERE

The premiere of the digital book would take place at the end of October.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the eviction of my art storage and the destruction of abandoned works of art, we had to postpone the book launch to December. We are faced with a budget deficit of 2%... HURRAH. we reached the 100%. We still have days left, keep donating, all money will go to the children dance school and other charity in Bali.
