Thema

Vrijdenken is essentieel in het creatieve proces van kunst. Vrijdenkers streven naar persoonlijke vrijheid en intellectuele onafhankelijkheid, ongeacht geloof, traditie of denkpatroon. In een wereld waarin verkeerde informatie en ideologische verdeeldheid de boventoon kunnen voeren, dient de documentaire als een herinnering aan het belang van rationeel denken, kritisch onderzoek en het nastreven van de waarheid. Daarom is het belangrijk om je thuis te voelen bij je eigen gedachten.

In het hart van Amsterdam zit The Embassy of the Free Mind, een veilige haven voor de ontdekkingsreis van vrije denkers en kunstenaars. Het biedt inzichten over de traditie van het vrije denken, die meer dan tweeduizend jaar teruggaat. Vragen als; waar komen we vandaan, hoe is alles ontstaan, waarom zijn we hier en wat betekent het om mens te zijn, maken allemaal deel uit van het idee dat alles in het universum met elkaar verbonden is en dat we allemaal een zijn. Maar hoe vertaalt dit zich dan naar het creatieve resultaat van deze kunstenaars?

Over ons

Wij zijn Lotus Brouwer en Evi Schellens, twee enthousiaste beginnende filmmakers. We hebben een achtergrond in journalistiek, maar voor onze minor Campusdoc maken we momenteel deze korte documentaire. Toen we elkaar ontmoetten aan het begin van deze cursus, hadden we een klik over kunst en vrije gedachten. Wat ons nu tot dit verhaal heeft geleid.

Korte film

In de documentaire onderzoeken we de diepgaande invloed van het vrije denken op kunst en creativiteit. We volgen onder andere Joep Beving en Craig Leon in hun reis naar hoe zij hun inspiratie halen uit het vrije denken. En we laten zien hoe het omarmen van vrijdenken kan dienen als een bron van inspiratie voor kunstenaars.

Waarom we deze documentaire maken

We hopen dat het je aanmoedigt om vooroordelen in twijfel te trekken en onafhankelijk te denken. En daardoor zinvolle gesprekken op gang brengt over de rol van vrije gedachten in de samenleving, creativiteit en persoonlijke groei. Het zal je aanmoedigen om na te denken over je eigen overtuigingen en waarden, en discussies aan te gaan over de kracht van onafhankelijk denken. Net zoals het al met ons heeft gedaan.

Première

‘Composing My Mind' gaat in juni 2024 in première op het CampusDoc filmfestival in het Louis Hartlooper Complex in Utrecht. In navolging van andere succesvolle CampusDoc documentaires is het onze ambitie om de film op internationale filmfestivals te vertonen.

Freethinking is essential in the creative process of art. Freethinkers strive for personal freedom and intellectual independence, regardless of religion, tradition or thinking pattern. In a world where misinformation and ideological divides can be prevalent, the documentary serves as a timely reminder of the importance of rational thought, critical inquiry, and the pursuit of truth. That’s why it is important to feel at home with your own thoughts.

In the heart of Amsterdam, The Embassy of the Free Mind is a safe haven in this journey of free thinkers and artists. It offers insights on the tradition of free thinking, dating back more than two thousand years. Questions such as; where did we come from, how did everything come into being, why are we here and what does it mean to be human, are all part of the idea that everything in the universe is connected and that we are all one. But how does this then translate into the creative output of these artists?

About us

We are Lotus Brouwer and Evi Schellens, two enthusiastic beginning filmmakers. We have a background in journalism, but for our minor Campusdoc we are currently making this short documentary. When we met at the start of this course, we connected over art and free thoughts. What now has led us to this story.

Short film

In the documentary, we will explore the profound influence of free thought on the arts and creativity. We will follow Joep Beving and Craig Leon, among others, in their journey of how they get their inspiration from free thinking. And it demonstrates how embracing freethinking can serve as a wellspring of inspiration for artists.

Why we make this documentary

We hope It encourages you to question preconceived notions and think independently. And thereby spark meaningful conversations about the role of free thought in society, creativity, and personal growth. It will encourage you to reflect on your own beliefs and values and engage in discussions about the power of independent thinking. Just as it has already done to us.

'Composing My Mind' will premiere in June 2024 and screen at the CampusDoc film festival at the Louis Hartlooper Complex in Utrecht. Following other successful CampusDoc documentaries, our ambition is to screen the film at international film festivals.
