Om mijn allereerste zintuiglijke tentoonstelling tijdens mijn kunstresidentie in Amersfoort te realiseren heb ik jouw steun nodig!

Ik heb vooronderzoek gedaan over de genezende aard van de legendarische godin in het oude China, een hybride wezen met een menselijk gezicht en een lang slangenlichaam genaamd 'Nü Wa’. Tijdens mijn kunstresidentie ga ik de intrinsieke relevantie tussen de mythische verhalen van 'Nü Wa' en onze hedendaagse samenleving herontdekken.

Door de grens tussen het heden en de mythische tijd te overschrijden, wil ik een ruimtelijke en zintuiglijke tentoonstelling creëren.

Ik mag de ruimte van het gastatelier De Pionier gratis gebruiken (vanaf 1 oktober 2023 tot 31 januari 2024) om 'Creating Life' te realiseren dankzij het mooie aanbod van K.F.Hein Fonds in samenwerking met De Plaatsmaker en Gemeente Amersfoort.

Tijdens mijn kunstresidentie krijg ik de kans om de bewoners van wooncomplex De Pionier te ontmoeten en in contact te komen. Ondersteund door K.F.Hein Fonds ga ik nieuw contact leggen met het beeldende kunstnetwerk in Amersfoort. Voor de tentoonstellingsperiode maak ik een interactief en toegankelijk publieksprogramma.

🌻 Wie ben ik?

Mijn naam is Ying Yi Wu. Ik ben beeldend kunstenaar en experience designer op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst en performance art. Ik ben geboren in China. Sinds 2016 woonachtig in Nederland en in 2018 heb ik MA in Fine Art and Design - Scenography behaald aan de HKU.

Door een onconventioneel perspectief op genezingsrituelen aan te nemen, creëer ik zowel visuele talen als zintuiglijke ervaringen met de bloemen en andere botanische materialen die de natuur biedt. Met de natuur, het lichaam en de Chinese mythologie als inspiratiebron, verbind ik mijn creatieve praktijken met de sociale dimensie van openbaar welzijn en collectieve healing. Mijn projecten komen vooral tot uiting in ruimtelijke installaties en participatieve performances en gaan vaak verder dan visuele presentatie. Sinds 2022 presenteer ik mijn projecten met de bloemen en andere botanische materialen op verschillende culturele broedplaatsen, zoals Casco Art Institute, Framer Framed Amsterdam, Bibliotheek Neude, Stadhuis Utrecht, De Kargadoor en Zimihc Theater.

💡 Wat houdt ‘Creating Life’ in?

Als een vrouwelijke hybride figuur is ‘Nü Wa’ de voorouder, de belichaming van de natuur, en de oorsprong van ‘het creëren van leven’ in de Chinese mythologie. Ik vind het fascinerend dat er ondanks het mythische verleden nog steeds mensen zijn die ‘Nü Wa' aanbidden door middel van verschillende rituelen. Met de iconografie van het gezicht van de mens en het lichaam van de slang, wordt haar status al eeuwen beschouwd als de schepping van de mensheid.

Wat kunnen we leren van het bestaan van ‘Nü Wa’? Wat houdt haar iconografie in?
Hoe positioneren we de verhalen van ‘Nü Wa’ in ons heden? Binnen deze
onderzoeksvragen stel ik me voor een genezend perspectief te nemen op de relatie
tussen mens en natuur, en te zoeken naar de overeenkomsten tussen 'Feministische
beweging’, en 'Symbiocene' van milieufilosoof Glenn Albrecht. Een centraal onderdeel van mijn onderzoeksproces is het vertalen van de kennis van 'Nü Wa' naar een universeel begrip over creëren, transformeren en helen.

Afgeleid van mijn eerdere ervaringen in scenografie, wens ik mijn ruimtelijke en zintuiglijke
vaardigheden te gebruiken voor de communicatie naar het publiek toe. Daarom zal ik,
naast de visionaire interpretatie/presentatie van ‘Nü Wa’, de geur van ‘Nü Wa’ te creëren op basis van haar karakters en verhalen. Door te experimenteren met botanische materialen, zal ik de meerdere geurlagen van 'Nü Wa' ontvouwen en een manier vinden om de geur in de ruimtelijke presentatie onder te brengen.

I have done pre-research on the healing nature of the legendary goddess in ancient China, a hybrid being called 'Nü Wa’ with a human face and a long snake body. During my art residency, I will rediscover the intrinsic relevance between the mythical stories of 'Nü Wa' and our contemporary society. By crossing the border between the present and mythical time, I want to create a spatial and sensory exhibition.

I can use the space of the guest studio De Pionier for free (from October 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024) to realize 'Creating Life' thanks to the nice offer from K.F.Hein Fonds in collaboration with De Plaatsmaker and the Gemeente Amersfoort.

During my art residency, I will have the opportunity to meet and connect with the residents of the De Pionier. Supported by K.F.Hein, I will make new contact with the visual arts network in Amersfoort. I will create an interactive and accessible public program for the exhibition period.

🌻 Who am I?
My name is Ying Yi Wu. I am a visual artist and experience designer at the intersection of visual art and performance art. I was born in China. Since 2016, I have been living in the Netherlands, and in 2018 I obtained an MA in Fine Art and Design - Scenography from HKU.

By adopting an unconventional perspective on healing rituals, I create both visual languages and sensory experiences with the flowers and other botanical materials that nature provides. With my source of inspiration in nature, body, and Chinese mythology, I connect my creative practices with the social dimension of public well-being and collective healing. My projects are mainly expressed in spatial installations and participatory performances and often go beyond visual presentation. Since 2022, I have been presenting my projects with flowers and other botanical materials at various cultural breeding grounds, such as Casco Art Institute, Framer Framed Amsterdam, Neude Library, Utrecht City Hall, De Kargadoor and Zimihc Theater.

💡 What does 'Creating Life' mean?
As a female hybrid figure, 'Nü Wa' is the ancestor, the embodiment of nature, and the origin of 'creating life' in Chinese mythology. I find it fascinating that despite its mythical past, there are still folks who worship 'Nü Wa' through various rituals. With the iconography of the face of the woman and the body of the snake, her status is steadily regarded as the creation of humanity.

What can we learn from the existence of 'Nü Wa'? What does her iconography mean? How do we position the stories of 'Nü Wa' in our present? Within these research questions, I imagine taking a healing perspective on the relationship between human beings and nature, and searching for the cross-resonance of the 'Feminist movement', as well as 'Symbiocene' by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht. A central part of my research process is translating the knowledge of 'Nü Wa' into a universal understanding of creating, transforming, and healing.

Derived from my previous experiences in scenography, I desire to employ spatial and sensory approaches to communicate with the public. Therefore I will, in addition to the visionary interpretation/presentation of 'Nü Wa', create the smell of 'Nü Wa' based on its characters and stories. By experimenting with botanical materials, I will unfold the multiple scent layers of 'Nü Wa' and find a way to accommodate the scent in the spatial presentation.
