Kiezen voor je eigen einde
Hoe ben je in staat te kiezen voor je eigen levenseinde? Wat gebeurt er op die momenten, vlak na de handeling? Is er spijt of berusting? Neemt je lichaam of juist je geest het over? Of blijf je steeds in controle? Juist dat allerlaatste ogenblik, waarop verlangen naar de dood daadwerkelijk tot de dood leidt, kan gevuld zijn vol spijt en twijfel. En dan is het te laat.

Over Spellbound
De korte film Spellbound gaat over ons vermogen over leven en dood na te denken. Over hoe de keuze daartussen soms vertroebeld raakt. In Spellbound ligt een vergrootglas op het moment dat iemand besluit een einde aan diens leven te maken. We volgen een vrouw die kampt met haar mentale gezondheid. In een droomwereld wordt ze geconfronteerd met zichzelf. Daar is ze in staat zichzelf te overwinnen en haar hoop en wil om te leven opnieuw te ontdekken.

Spellbound toont de kwetsbaarheid én de kracht van de mens. Over hoe makkelijk het is over bepaalde grenzen te gaan, naar een plek waarvandaan het onmogelijk lijkt terug te keren. En over hoe iemand uiteindelijk de wil vindt om door te zetten.

Over de maker: Nicola Hepp
De afgelopen jaren maakte ik, Nicola Hepp, drie keer mee dat iemand in mijn omgeving zelfmoord pleegde. Twee van hen overleefden het niet. Dat zette me aan het denken. Intense en onvermijdelijke gedachten verankerden zich in mijn lichaam en lieten niet meer los. Daarom moet ik Spellbound maken. Hiermee wil ik herkenning oproepen en een lastig onderwerp op een mooie manier bespreekbaar maken. Met hopelijk een sprankje hoop voor mensen in moeilijke tijden.

Als choreograaf en filmmaker ligt mijn passie ligt in het filmen van dans en het maken van dansfilms, in een verhaal vertellen door beweging en beeld. Eenzaamheid raakt mij en het begrijpen van mijn medemens en de manier waarop we de realiteit definiëren, zijn drijfveren voor mij als maker.

Mijn eerdere werk ging over thema’s als depressie, eenzaamheid en verlies, bijvoorbeeld in Echo (2014), Songs of the Underworld (2016) en The Double (2016). Mijn films zijn vertoond op festivals over de hele wereld en ontvingen prijzen en nominaties op o.a. Leeds International Film Festival, Fiver Festival, Inshadow Festival, 60secondsdance, Dance on Screen Festival, Vesuvius Film Festival, Underexposed Film Festival, Alternative Film Festival and Cinemaniacs.

Waar gaat je geld naartoe?
Eerder ontvingen we al subsidie van het Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunst, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds en een Production Grant van Dance Films Association. Om de film nog een niveau hoger te tillen en écht die volle potentie te bereiken, missen we het laatste stukje budget. Geld dat hard nodig is voor hoogwaardige visual effects, soundscape en camera- en lichtapparatuur. Onderdelen die je als kijker het hoofd, de gedachten en de gevoelens van de hoofdpersoon in zuigen, om uiteindelijk een onuitwisbare indruk achter te laten.

Choosing your own end
How are you able to choose your own ending? What happens in those moments, right after the act? Is there regret or acceptance? Does your body or mind take over? Or do you always stay in control? That very last moment when the desire for death actually leads to death can be filled with regret and doubt. And then it may be too late.

About Spellbound
The short film Spellbound is about our ability to contemplate life and death. It explores how the choice between the two can sometimes become clouded. Spellbound zooms in on the moment someone decides to end their life. We follow a woman struggling with her mental health. In a dream world, she confronts herself. There, she manages to overcome herself and rediscover her hope and desire to live.

Spellbound showcases both the vulnerability and strength of humans. It touches on how easy it is to cross certain boundaries, to a place that seems impossible to return from. And about how someone eventually finds the will to persevere.

About the creator: Nicola Hepp
Over the past few years, I, Nicola Hepp, have experienced three instances of someone in my inner circle committing suicide. Two of them did not survive. This made me reflect deeply. Intense and inevitable thoughts anchored themselves within me and wouldn't let go. That's why I had to make Spellbound. Through it, I aim to evoke recognition and address a difficult topic in a beautiful manner. Hopefully, it provides a glimmer of hope for people during tough times.

As a choreographer and filmmaker, my passion lies in filming dance and making dance films, telling a story through movement and imagery. Loneliness touches me, and understanding my fellow human beings and the way we define reality are motivations for me as a creator.

My previous work tackled themes like depression, loneliness, and loss, as seen in Echo (2014), Songs of the Underworld (2016), and The Double (2016). My films have been showcased at festivals worldwide and have received awards and nominations at events like the Leeds International Film Festival, Fiver Festival, Inshadow Festival, 60secondsdance, Dance on Screen Festival, Vesuvius Film Festival, Underexposed Film Festival, Alternative Film Festival, and Cinemaniacs.

Where does your money go?
We previously received grants from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, the Prince Bernhard Cultural Foundation, and a Production Grant from the Dance Films Association. To elevate the film even further and truly achieve its full potential, we are missing the last piece of our budget. Funds are urgently needed for high-quality visual effects, soundscape, and camera and lighting equipment. Elements that immerse the viewer into the protagonist's mind, thoughts, and emotions, leaving an indelible impression.
