DUO

In 2021 verscheen in samenwerking met platenmaatschappij Cobra Records mijn debuut-cd 'SOLO' met werken voor cello solo uit de 20e eeuw. De cd werd bekroond met de 'Diapason d'Or' en 'LaClef d'Or ResMusica' prijzen en kreeg vijfsterrenrecensies in de muziekbladen BBC MusicMagazine, Luister en FonoForum. Dit jaar slaan pianist Robert Kulek en ik de handen ineen voor mijn volgende cd-project: 'DUO'. We nemen werken op voor cello en piano van drie andere componisten uit de 20e eeuw: Bohuslav Martinu, Francis Poulenc en Paul Hindemith.

Over ons
Robert Kulek is een Amerikaan van Letse afkomst. Dankzij zijn veelzijdigheid als collaboratief pianist, treedt Robert Kulek regelmatig op met enkele van de meest vooraanstaande instrumentalisten van deze tijd, waaronder Nikolaj Znaider, Arabella Steinbacher, Daniel Müller-Schott, Augustin Hadelich en Simone Lamsma.
Ik werk sinds 2018 als solocelliste bij de 'Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen' en ben bovendien actief als soliste en kamermusicus bij internationale festivals zoals het Verbier Festival, Grachtenfestival, Podium Festival Esslingen, Musikfestival Radebeul, International Bach Festival en Wonderfeel Festival. Als soliste ben ik onder andere opgetreden met het Göttinger Sinfonieorchester, Theater Erfurt en Kammerorchester Kiel.

De composities
Alle drie de componisten schreven deze werken terwijl hun land verwikkeld was in een wereldoorlog. Martinu werd vanwege zijn politieke opvattingen vervolgd door het naziregime. Hij componeerde zijn eerste cellosonate in 1939, kort voordat hij naar de VS vluchtte. Poulenc, door het naziregime bedreigd als homoseksueel, schreef zijn sonate in 1940, kort nadat hij uit militaire dienst was ontslagen na de capitulatie van Frankrijk aan Duitsland. Hindemith's vroege werk, Drie Stukken Op.8, werd gecomponeerd in 1917, in het derde jaar van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, voordat hij werd opgeroepen voor militaire dienst.

Release
De CD zal in november 2023 door COBRA records wereldwijd gedistribueerd en uitgebracht worden op iTunes, Spotify, Googleplay, Sonymusic enz. in meer dan 100 landen. Er komt een extra master in DSD-stereo, surround en binaurale kwaliteit. Er wordt voor internationale reclame gezorgd en ik zal de CD persoonlijk tijdens release concerten presenteren. Over de data van onze release concerten zal ik u als donateur op de hoogte houden.

Nuala McKenna and Robert Kulek are recording three works from the 20st century for cello and piano. With your support the CD will be successfully released in November 2023!

In 2021 my debut CD 'SOLO' was released in collaboration with record company Cobra Records with works for cello solo from the 20th century. The CD was awarded the 'Diapason d'Or' and 'La Clef d'Or ResMusica' awards and received five-star reviews in the music magazines BBC Music Magazine, Listen and FonoForum. This year I am joining forces with pianist Robert Kulek for my next CD project: 'DUO'. We are recording works for cello and piano by three other composers of the 20th century: Bohuslav Martinu, Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith.

About us
Robert Kulek is an American of Latvian descent. Thanks to his versatility as a collaborative pianist, Robert Kulek regularly performs with some of today's leading instrumentalists, including Nikolaj Znaider, Arabella Steinbacher, Daniel Müller-Schott, Augustin Hadelich and Simone Lamsma.
I have been working as a solo cellist at the 'Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen' since 2018 and I am also active as a soloist and chamber musician at international festivals such as the Verbier Festival, Grachtenfestival, Podium Festival Esslingen, Musikfestival Radebeul, International Bach Festival and Wonderfeel Festival. As a soloist I have performed with the Göttinger Sinfonieorchester, Theater Erfurt and Kammerorchester Kiel, among others.

The compositions
All three composers wrote these works whilst their country was involved in a world war. Martinu was persecuted by the Nazi regime because of his political views. He composed his first cello sonata in 1939, shortly before he fled to the US. Poulenc, threatened by the Nazi regime as a homosexual, wrote his sonata in 1940, shortly after he had been discharged from military service after the capitulation of France to Germany. Hindemith's early work, Three Pieces Op.8, was composed in 1917, in the third year of the World War I, before he was called up for military service.

Release
The CD will be distributed by COBRA records worldwide in November 2023 and released on iTunes, Spotify, Googleplay, Sonymusic etc. in more than 100 countries. There will be an additional master in DSD stereo, surround and binaural quality. International advertising will be provided and I will personally present the CD during release concerts.
