Introduction:
Greetings from windy Amsterdam! I’m Nihal Rabbani and I need your help with sustaining the Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam. The third edition was just held at Rialto De Pijp from 12-15 May 2023. This year commemorated 75 years of Al Nakba, also known as The Catastrophe responsible for the 1948 destruction and mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland.

What is the PFFA?
The Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam was founded in 2015, with a mission to showcase a diversity of Palestinian cinema by both accomplished and emerging directors. This edition featured ten blocks with sixteen films, ranging from shorts to animations, drama features and documentaries.

Festival programme:
The festival kicked off on Friday 12 May with Jumana Manna’s awarded documentary Foragers, which recently premiered at the IDFA. The programme also featured a Mother’s Day special on Sunday 14 May, highlighting films with strong female themes. Guest director Alia Yunis screened her nominated documentary The Golden Harvest, followed by a Q&A with editor/co-producer Jaime Torres, and an olive oil tasting in collaboration with Fair Trade Palestine.

Monday 15 May coincided with Nakba Day and Rialto’s “Expat Cinema”, concluding the 2023 PFFA with Najwa Najjar’s drama feature Between Heaven & Earth.

This campaign's mission:
We're delighted that the PFFA will receive a grant from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts to cover 75% of the festival costs. This crowdfund intends to raise the remaining 25% of the total festival budget, as well as post-production and overhead costs not financed by the AFK. It's important that The PFFA continues being supported by such institutions during a time that Palestinian cultural events are being blocked in some EU countries, simply for discriminatory reasons. Therefore, it is essential that we reach the target budget by June 6 so that this festival continues to thrive in Amsterdam. This will also stimulate future collaborations with other organisations.

A portion of the budget will be invested in a travelling photo exhibition entitled “Five Minutes from Home” - In Search of Jerusalem Airport” curated by Nahed Awwad. What started as a film screening evolved into the revival of an exhibition that was launched in Palestine 15 years ago. Nineteen archive photos were re-printed with care of an established photo lab, and will become a sustainable project traveling to different destinations throughout the EU and possibly other regions. We’re currently raising funds to realize the next phase, aimed at recovering lost memories of Jerusalem Airport.

Groeten uit waaierig Amsterdam! Ik ben Nihal Rabbani en ik heb jouw hulp nodig bij het ondersteunen van het Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam. Zojuist vond de derde editie plaats bij Rialto De Pijp van 12-15 mei 2023. Dit jaar stond in het teken van 75 jaar Al Nakba, ook wel bekend als De Catastrofe verantwoordelijk voor de verwoesting en massale verdrijving van Palestijnen uit hun thuisland in 1948.

Wat is het PFFA?
Het Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam werd opgericht in 2015, met als missie om een diversiteit aan klassieke en hedendaagse Palestijnse cinematografische vertelkunst te vertonen, door zowel gevestigde als opkomende regisseurs. Deze editie bevatte tien blokken met zestien films, variërend van korte films tot animaties, speelfilms en documentaires.

Het festivalprogramma:
Het festival trapte op vrijdag 12 mei af met de bekroonde documentaire Foragers van Jumana Manna, die onlangs op IDFA in première ging. Op zondag 14 mei stond er een Moederdagspecial op het programma, waarin films met sterke vrouwelijke thema's centraal waren. Gastregisseur Alia Yunis vertoonde haar genomineerde documentaire The Golden Harvest, gevolgd door een Q&A samen met editor/co-producent Jaime Torres, en een olijfolieproeverij in samenwerking met Fair Trade Palestine.

Maandag 15 mei viel samen met Nakba Day en Rialto's "Expat Cinema", waarmee de 2023 PFFA werd afgesloten met Najwa Najjar's speelfilm Between Heaven & Earth.

Missie van deze crowdfund:
Het PFFA krijgt subsidie ​​van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, die 75% van de festivalkosten dekt. Deze crowdfund streeft om de resterende 25% van het totale festivalbudget in te zamelen, evenals postproductie- en overheadkosten die niet door het AFK ​​worden gefinancierd. Het is belangrijk dat de PFFA door dergelijke instellingen blijft worden gesteund in een tijd dat Palestijnse culturele evenementen in sommige EU-landen worden geblokkeerd, simpelweg om discriminerende redenen. Het is daarom essentieel dat het doelbudget voor 6 juni wordt gehaald, zodat dit festival in Amsterdam blijft bloeien. Dit stimuleert ook toekomstige samenwerkingen met andere organisaties.

Een deel van het budget zal worden geïnvesteerd in postproductiekosten voor een reizende fototentoonstelling getiteld "Five Minutes from Home" - In Search of Jerusalem Airport" samengesteld door Nahed Awwad. Wat begon als een filmvertoning, groeide uit tot de revival van een fototentoonstelling die 15 jaar geleden in Palestina werd gelanceerd. Negentien archieffoto's werden met zorg herdrukt door een gevestigd fotolab, waarbij zij onderdeel van een duurzaam project worden dat naar verschillende bestemmingen in de EU en mogelijk andere regio’s zullen reizen. Wij zijn momenteel fondsen aan het werven om de volgende stap te realiseren, gericht op het herstellen van verloren herinneringen aan de luchthaven van Jeruzalem.
