Ensemble met een droom
Ensemble Fantasticus onderneemt in 2022 en 2023 een Buxtehude pelgrimstocht waarin het hele kamermuziek oeuvre van Dietrich Buxtehude tot klinken wordt gebracht tijdens concerten en een CD-opname. Ensemble Fantasticus is een Nederlands ensemble dat zich al meer dan 10 jaar specialiseert in de zgn. stylus fantasticus, een muziekstijl die veel gebruik maakt van vrije ‘improvisatorische’ elementen. Ensemble Fantasticus bestaat uit Robert Smith, viola da gamba, violiste Rie Kimura en klavecinist Pieter Jan Belder. Zij dromen al jaren om Dietrichs Buxtehudes kamermuziek integraal op te nemen. Die droom komt in vervulling door de vraag van Brilliant Classics om zo’n opname te realiseren.

Dietrich Buxtehude
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was werkzaam als organist in Lübeck. Als componist sloot Buxtehude’s stijl nauw aan bij de Stylus Fantasticus. Zowel de jonge Bach als de jonge Händel bezochten Buxtehude in Lübeck en bestudeerden zijn werk. Rond de eeuwwisseling van de 17e en 18e eeuw gaf Buxtehude zijn sonates voor viool, viola da gamba en klavecimbel uit. Opvallend is de experimenteerdrift van Buxtehude. Hoewel er maar enkele jaren tussen de publicatie van opus 1 en 2 zit is er muzikaal een opmerkelijke verandering in stijl waarneembaar. De 14 sonates uit deze twee publicaties hebben wij inmiddels op cd opgenomen.
De manuscript sonatas
Naast deze gepubliceerde sonates zijn er echter nog een substantieel aantal werken overgeleverd in manuscript. Deze werken staan momenteel op onze lessenaars en vragen om een iets grotere bezetting; zo zijn er 3 sonates voor 2 violen gamba en basso continuo, een sonate voor gamba, violone en basso continuo. Voor de opname en concerten van deze werken schuiven de musici, luitist Fred Jacobs, violiste Elise Dupont en violonespeler Chun-Yuan Yang bij ons aan. Wij willen onze collega’s een eerlijk honorarium aanbieden voor hun medewerking en hiervoor vragen wij uw steun.
Wanneer en waar
Op 25 mei spelen wij het gehele programma voor deze CD tijdens een concert in de Doopsgezinde Kerk te Leeuwarden. In de week daarop nemen wij de CD op in de prachtig klinkende Nederlands Hervormde Kerk van Mijnsherenland. De cd komt in de herfst/winter uit.

Help Ensemble Fantasticus finish their Buxtehude recordings!
Ensemble with a dream
Ensemble Fantasticus will make a Buxtehude pilgrimage in 2022 and 2023, performing and recording the entire instrumental chamber music of Dietrich Buxtehude. Ensemble Fantasticus is a Dutch ensemble that has been specializing for more than 10 years in the so-called stylus fantasticus, a music style that makes extensive use of free 'improvisational' elements. Ensemble Fantasticus consists of Robert Smith, viola da gamba, violinist Rie Kimura and harpsichordist Pieter Jan Belder. For several years it has been their dream to record Dietrich's Buxtehude's chamber music in its entirety. An interest in this project from Brilliant Classics gave the perfect opportunity to make this dream come true.

Dietrich Buxtehude
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was the organist of Lübeck. As a composer, Buxtehude's style was closely related to the Stylus Fantasticus. Both the young Bach and the young Handel visited Buxtehude in Lübeck to study his work. Around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, Buxtehude published his sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord. Buxtehude's passion for experimentation is striking. Although there are only a few years between the publication of opus 1 and 2, a remarkable change in style can be observed musically. We have now recorded the 14 sonatas from these two publications on CD.
The Manuscript Sonatas
However, in addition to the published sonatas, Opus 1 & 2, a substantial number of works survive in manuscript form. These works are currently on our music stands and require a slightly larger cast: there are 3 sonatas for 2 violins, gamba and basso continuo; a sonata for gamba, violone and basso continuo as well as a viola da gamba solo. The musicians, lutenist Fred Jacobs, violinist Elise Dupont and violone player Chun-Yuan Yang join us for the recording and concerts of these works. We want to offer our colleagues a fair fee for their cooperation and we ask for your support for this.
Where and when?
On May 25th we will play the entire program for this CD during a concert in the Doopsgezinde Church in Leeuwarden. In the following week we record the CD in a beautiful sounding church in the tiny village of Mijnsherenland. The CD will be released in the autumn/winter.
