Introduction story 'A Short Film About Home'

Het verhaal van deze film gaat over de Nederlandse actor Ann. Ze voelt zich verloren in haar stuklopende relatie en de stad waarin ze woont. Vanuit een groot verlangen naar verandering en helderheid besluit Ann te gaan schrijven.

Tijdens het schrijfproces stuit ze op een gedicht van de Engelse dichter John Keats. In dit gedicht beschrijft hij een Schots huis met een rivier ernaast. Ann voelt zich zo aangetrokken tot deze beschreven plek, dat ze vastberaden is om dit huis te gaan bezoeken. Ze besluit twee weken alleen door Schotland te reizen waarin ze zich door de geschiedenis van John Keats laat leiden.

We volgen Ann tijdens haar verblijf in Schotland waarbij ze twee weken in een huis logeert in het dorpje Sanquhar. Samen met haar ontdekken we de Schotse bergen en ongerepte natuur en maken kennis met de dorpsbewoners. Een gevoel van eenzaamheid en wanhoop bekruipt haar, maar haar kracht en kwetsbaarheid houden haar op de been.

In onze film zullen wij het gevoel van 'thuis' onderzoeken. Waarom proberen we een gevoel van thuis te zoeken als we verloren en alleen zijn? En waar kunnen we dit gevoel van thuis vinden?

The story of this film is about the Dutch acteur Ann. She feels lost in her dead-end relationship and the city where she lives. From a big desire for change and clarity, Ann decides to write.

During her writing process she stumbles on a poem by the English poet John Keats. In one of Keats poems, he describes a Scottish house with a river next to it. Ann feels so drawn to this poem that she feels she needs to look for this house. She decides to travel to Scotland for two weeks on her own to follow the heritage of John Keats.

In our film, we follow Ann during her stay in Scotland. She stays in a house for two weeks which is located in the village of Sanquhar. Through her eyes, we're going to explore the Scottish mountains and nature but also the villagers. Loneliness and despair creep up on Ann during her travels but her power and vulnerability during her trip keep her going.

By telling this story in our film, we will try to explore the feeling of 'home'. Why do we seek for a home when we're lost and lonely? And where can we exactly find this feeling of home?

Met deze film willen wij de eenvoud van verhalen vertelling via bewegend beeld eren. We gaan terug naar de basis en draaien deze film op zwart wit 16mm film. Daarnaast werken we in een klein team; een regisseur, een DOP, een camera-assistent, geluidspersoon en een acteur. Een kleine en intieme manier van samenwerking is volgens ons bevorderend voor het maken van pure en goede keuzes.

Door het scenario te draaien op zwart wit film zal de schoonheid van de Schotse natuur het best tot zijn recht komen.

Don't try to be original, try to be good!

With this film we want to honor the simplicity of telling stories through cinema. We're going back to the basics and going to make this movie on black and white 16mm film. Besides this, we're going to work with a small dedicated team; a director, cinematographer, a camera-assistant, sound technician and an actor. Working in a small and intimate team is in our opinion ideal for making pure and good choices in film.

By shooting the script on black and white film, the beauty of Scotland will be brought out in the purest possible way.

Motivation filming in Scotland

De film is deels geïnspireerd op de regisseur, Sophie Saddington, haar relatie met Schotland en Schotse familie. Haar vader is Schots en hij groeide op in het dorpje Sanquhar.

Haar Schotse familie bestaat uit getalenteerde acteurs en muzikanten. Theater en poëzie staan dan ook centraal in de Schotse cultuur.

Geïnspireerd op filmmakers als John Cassavetes, die zijn echte familie als acteurs gebruikte, gaat zij haar eigen familie regisseren.

The story of the film is partly based on the director, Sophie Saddington, her own relationship with Scotland and her Scottish family home. Her family origins are in Sanquhar.

Her Scottish family are a group of talented actors and musicians. Theater and poetry play an important role in the Scottish culture.

Inspired by filmmakers like John Cassavetes, who used his own family for acting in his movies, she is going to direct her own family too.

Director, writer and producer: Sophie Saddington

Sophie Saddington (Amsterdam, 2000) is een half Nederlandse en half Schotse fotograaf uit Amsterdam. Al vanaf jonge leeftijd wist Sophie dat ze in de toekomst films wilde gaan maken en unieke scenario’s wilde gaan vertalen naar bewegend beeld.
Toen ze op haar zeventiende naar Amsterdam verhuisde, is ze gaan werken als fotograaf bij onder andere Het Parool. Sophie's eigen werk is vooral tot bloei gekomen in New York waar ze in 2022 twee maanden verbleef. Eenmaal terug in Amsterdam was er nog maar een ding waar zij zich op wilde richten, beginnen met film maken!

Sophie is geïnspireerd door het werk van filmmakers als Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick, Krzysztof Kieślowski en Charlie Kaufman. Wat zij het meest ambieert in cinema is het nemen van pure, vrije en fantasierijke keuzes. Om zo het best haar blik op de wereld te kunnen vertolken. In al haar regiekeuzes is het vinden van een perfecte harmonie in spel, cinematografie en muziek de leidraad.

Het aanwakkeren van de puurste verbeelding, waanzin en schoonheid in de mens is altijd al Sophie's doel geweest.

Sophie Saddington (Amsterdam, 2000) is a half Dutch, half Scottish photographer from Amsterdam. From a young age, Sophie always knew that she wanted to make films and translate unique scenarios into moving images. When she moved to Amsterdam at the age of seventeen, she started working as a photographer at Het Parool, in magazines and also made a lot of documentary photography. Sophie's own work has especially blossomed in New York, where she spent two months in 2022. Once back in Amsterdam, there was only one thing left to focus on; start making movies!

Sophie is inspired by the work of filmmakers such as Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick, Krzysztof Kieślowski and Charlie Kaufman. What she aspires most in cinema is to make pure, free and imaginative choices in order to best interpret her view of the world. Finding a perfect harmony in acting, cinematography and music is the guiding principle in all her directing choices.

Katja van den Broeke (Breda, 1997) studeerde in 2022 af aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie als cinematographer.

Met een voorliefde voor het analoge medium houdt Katja er van om te werken met de nuances tussen natuurlijk licht en donker. Altijd op zoek naar de juiste balans tussen sfeer, inhoud en compositie. Met een onbevangen blik documenteert zij de schoonheid van de eenvoud.

With a love for the analog medium, Katja likes to point out nuances between natural light and shadow. Always looking for the best balance between atmosphere, content and composition. She documents the beauty of simplicity with an open mind.

Actor: Anne Meijer

Anne Meijer (Arnhem, 1997) studeerde de Meisner Acteer Technique van 2018 tot 2021 bij Meisner International New York. Momenteel schrijft en speelt ze voor een theatergezelschap in Haarlem.

Geïnspireerd door de Duits-Amerikaanse actrice Uta Hagen, is Anne met een enorme voorliefde voor theater en film opzoek naar menselijke waarachtigheid in spel en fantasie. Haar spel is speels, oprecht, in het moment en met overgave.
