Fotoboek SEA YOU

Hallo! Mijn naam is Annegien van Doorn. Ik ben fotograaf en beeldend kunstenaar. Je kent misschien mijn vorige publicatie, Biophilia, die ik ook mede dankzij jullie support via Voordekunst heb gerealiseerd. Biophilia is inmiddels uitverkocht, maar gelukkig komt er een nieuw fotoboek aan!

De titel van dit nieuwe fotoboek is SEA YOU. Het gaat over de zee, over degenen die aan de kust wonen, over mij en eigenlijk ook over jou. In SEA YOU onderzoek ik hoe wij aan de kust een diepe verbondenheid met de natuur kunnen ervaren. Hoewel ik het grootste gedeelte van mijn leven buiten Zeeland heb doorgebracht, voel ik nog altijd de sterke aantrekkingskracht van de zee. Wat is dat toch? Waarom voelen wij ons zo aangetrokken tot de zee? Waarom fotograferen zoveel mensen haar? Ziet de zee, dat immense water, er niet altijd min of meer hetzelfde uit? Toch lijkt ze ons nooit te vervelen. Hoewel het water ongetemd, gewelddadig en het geluid soms oorverdovend is, lijken we er troost in te vinden. Wat kan de zee voor iemands leven betekenen als je er zo dichtbij woont?

Om dit te onderzoeken heb ik inwoners van Westkapelle geïnterviewd die een sterke band hebben met de zee. Zoals de voormalige vuurtorenwachter, een jonge moeder die met haar paard in zee zwemt, een bioloog die de vogelpopulatie zorgvuldig in de gaten houdt en een stel dat elke vrijdag een frietje in de auto op de dijk eet om hun dagelijkse zorgen te vergeten.

Hoe het begon..

Het is allemaal begonnen met het archief van de Westkappelse amateurfotograaf Neeltje Flipse-Roelse (1921-2008) waarin ik op uitnodiging van De Mix Nederland ingedoken ben. Haar enorme fascinatie voor de zee, waar zij telkens opnieuw naar toe getrokken werd, heeft mij naar dezelfde kust gebracht. En de inwoners van Westkapelle namen mij mee in hun leven dat, net als zijzelf, onlosmakelijk verbonden is met de Noordzee.

Het werk wat hieruit voortkwam is, in combinatie met het werk van Neeltje Flipse-Roelse, een half jaar lang te zien geweest in het Zeeuws Museum en op het station in Middelburg. Het bracht veel mensen van de kust naar het museum. Nu de tentoonstelling afgelopen is, wil ik graag eindigen waar ik begon. Ik wil een fotoboek maken dat het werk van Neeltje en mij opnieuw samenbrengt op een manier die uitnodigt om de zee zelf te gaan verkennen. En om dit te doen, heb ik jouw hulp nodig!

Het is namelijk niet zomaar een fotoboek om door te bladeren, maar een publicatie die schreeuwt om meegenomen te worden naar het strand. Daarover zometeen meer.

Wie was Neeltje Flipse-Roelse?

Neeltje Flipse-Roelse is geboren in 1921 in Westkapelle en overleden in 2008. Op haar 15de verjaardag kreeg zij een camera van haar ouders kado. Toen de oorlog een paar jaar later uitbrak, fotografeerde zij de bezetters stiekem van onder haar rok en van onder de dakpannen van haar ouderlijk huis. Na de oorlog legde ze de wederopbouw van Westkapelle vast. Daarnaast fotografeerde ze het alledaagse leven in het dorp, met name op en om het strand. In de foto’s die ze daar maakte, komt haar authentieke blik duidelijk naar voren. Voor dit fotoboek heb ik als het ware samengewerkt met deze vrouw, die in een andere tijd dezelfde fascinatie had als ik. Haar foto’s ademen de schoonheid van het alledaagse en de grootsheid van de natuur. Je ziet haar enorme gevoel voor compositie en detail, maar ook hoe zij zeker niet vies was van een beetje humor.

En dan is er nog een derde Zeeuwse vrouw die een belangrijke rol speelt in dit fotoboek. Naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling in het Zeeuws Museum heeft schrijfster Franca Treur een mooie tekst geschreven. Net als Neeltje en ik, is Franca opgegroeid in een dorpje op Walcheren. Zij weet het leven van de kustbewoners en hun verbondenheid met de zee dan ook als geen ander onder woorden te brengen.

Niet zomaar een boek

De vormgeving wordt wederom gedaan door het designduo Maartje & Merel. Zij hebben ook mijn laatste fotoboek Biophilia vormgegeven. Zij zoeken altijd naar een vorm die het beste past bij het verhaal dat ik met mijn foto’s wil vertellen. Dus ook deze keer wordt het niet zomaar een boek. Het wordt een strandpakket. Bij het boek zit een strandhanddoek met daarop een fotoprint! Het leukste is om dit fotoboek al liggend op je handdoek aan het strand te bekijken. Lukt dat niet, geen zorgen: bij het boek komt een soundtrack van de zee waardoor je overal je handdoek kunt spreiden, het boek kan openen en je je aan de kust kunt wanen. De zee hoopt to SEA YOU!

Waarom een crowdfunding

Ik vind het belangrijk dat mijn werk uit het museum stapt en voor iedereen te zien is, maar het maken van een kunstboek in een kleine oplage is liefdewerk. De drukkosten zijn hoog en de winstmarge minimaal. Helemaal wanneer ik mijn boek via een winkel verkoop. Dus alles wat ik direct kan verkopen, zonder tussenkomst van derden en bijbehorende commissies, helpt mij om de maakkosten terug te verdienen.
Je helpt me dus enorm als je het boek nu alvast besteld (of een print koopt). Bovendien krijg je korting op de verkoopsprijs. Een win-win situatie, dus maak me los!

Do you want to help me produce my photo book SEA YOU?
Hello! My name is Annegien van Doorn. I am a photographer and visual artist. You may be familiar with my previous publication, Biophilia, which I also produced with your help through Voordekunst. Biophilia is currently sold out, but a new book is on the way!

The title of my new photo book is SEA YOU. It’s about the sea, about those who live along the coast, about me, and actually also about you. In SEA YOU I explore how we could experience a deep connection to nature on the seaside. Although I have spent most of my life outside Zeeland, I still feel a strong attraction to the sea. Why are we drawn to the sea so much? Why do so many people photograph her? Doesn't the sea, that immense body of water, always look more or less the same? Nonetheless, she never seems to bore us. Although the water is untamed, violent and occasionally deafening, we seem to find comfort in it. What does the sea mean in one’s life when you live so near to it?

To get a better picture of what life can look like under the influence of the sea, I’ve interviewed residents of Westkapelle who have a strong connection to the sea. Like the former lighthouse keeper, a young mother who swims in the sea with her horse, a biologist who carefully monitors the bird population and a couple eating fries in the car on the dike every Friday to forget their daily worries.

How it started..
It all started with the archive of amateur photographer Neeltje Flipse-Roelse (1921-2008) from Westkapelle. Her enormous fascination for the sea, to which she was drawn again and again, has brought me to the same coast. And the people of Westkapelle invited me into their world which is closely connected to the North Sea.

The work I’ve made, in combination with the work of Neeltje Flipse-Roelse, has been on show in the Zeeuws Museum and at the station in Middelburg for six months. It brought many people from the coast to the museum. Now that the exhibition is over, I'd like to finish where I began. I want to make a photo book that combines the work of Neeltje and myself in such a manner that it encourages you to explore the sea for yourself.
And I need your support to do this!

Since it’s more than simply a photo book, it’s a publication that must be taken to the beach. I’ll tell you more about it soon..

Who was Neeltje Flipse-Roelse?
Neeltje Flipse-Roelse was born in Westkapelle in 1921 and passed away in 2008. On her 15th birthday she got a camera from her parents. When the war broke out a few years later, she secretly photographed the invaders from under her skirt and beneath the roof tiles of her parent’s house. After the war, she documented the reconstruction of Westkapelle. But she also photographed everyday life in the village, particularly on and around the beach. Her authentic look is clearly evident in the photos she took there. For this photo book I collaborated, as it were, with this woman who had the same fascination as me in another time. Her photos breathe the beauty of the everyday and the grandeur of nature. You can notice her incredible attention to detail and composition, as well as the fact that she was not afraid of a little fun.

Then there's a third woman from Zeeland who has a significant role in this photo book. In response to the show at the Zeeuws Museum, author Franca Treur created a very lovely text. Franca, like Neeltje and I, grew up in a hamlet on Walcheren. She understands the lives of coastal residents and their connection to the water like no other.

It’s not just a book
The design is once again by design duo Maartje & Merel. They also designed my latest photo book Biophilia.They’re constantly looking for the ideal form to match the story I want to tell with my photos. So, also this time it won't just simply be a book.
