Hallo! Wij zijn Leone Monaco (klassieke pianist) en Elisa de Toffol (klassieke zangeres en actrice) en we zijn verheugd ons project te presenteren: “Liszt plays Faust”, een oorspronkelijk gemaakte voorstelling waarin we u het verhaal van Faust willen vertellen met behulp van Liszt’s muziek en Goethe’s drama. Maar laten we het eerst in het kort hebben over wie we zijn.

Wie zijn we?

Leone Monaco is een 24-jarige Italiaanse klassieke concertpianist die momenteel bezig is met het tweede jaar van zijn Master Klassieke Piano aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Hij behaalde een bachelor- en een masterdiploma in klassieke piano in Italië en hij besloot naar Nederland te komen om zijn horizon te verbreden en te experimenteren met nieuwe uitvoeringsmogelijkheden. Hij trad op in verschillende concertzalen in Italië, Spanje en Nederland, alleen spelend, als solist met orkest of in verschillende kamermuziekgroepen.

Sinds zijn tienerjaren houdt hijervan om muziek te verbinden met andere kunstvormen, vooral literatuur. Dit bracht hem ertoe het programma muziekrepertoire te verkennen: muzikale composities geïnspireerd door andere werken: een schilderij of een literair werk. Op dit gebied werd hij al snel verliefd op de muziek van Franz Liszt, terwijl hij verschillende werken van de Hongaarse componist bestudeerde, oefende en uitvoerde. Zijn liefde voor dit repertoire bracht hem ertoe nieuwe uitvoeringsmogelijkheden te experimenteren met als doel muziek en literatuur (in dit geval theater) direct op het podium te laten versmelten om deze verbanden duidelijk te maken aan het publiek.

Met een grote liefde voor theater in al zijn vormen en voor uitvoeringen die de samenhang van de kunsten bevorderen, werkt Elisa De Toffol als klassieke zangeres en performer in enkele van de belangrijkste theaters en festivals over de hele wereld: Bayerische Staatsoper, München (Duitsland); Di Menna Center, NY (VS); Salzburger Festspiele (Oostenrijk); Grachten Festival/Early Music Festival (Utrecht); Opera Forward Festival/Wonderfeel (Nederland).

In “Liszt plays Faust” ziet u haar als actrice in de driedubbele rol van Faust-Gretchen-Mephistopheles.

En nu... het project!

We willen een nieuw concertformat creëren: een originele uitvoering die is gemaakt om u met ons te begeleiden in het verhaal van Faust door twee meesterwerken van westerse muziek en literatuur samen te voegen: Liszt‘s pianosonate in B klein en Goethe’s Faust. Door middel van deze voorstelling vertellen we u het verhaal van Faust en spelen we de meest beslissende scènes van Goethe's drama. Daarna wordt de pianosonate voor uuitgevoerd, zodat u zonder aanpassingen in zijn geheel kunt genieten van het originele muziekwerk. Terwijl het tweede deel van de voorstelling de nadruk legt op de pure en "traditionele" pianoconcertvorm, laat het eerste deel een meer theatrale en originele setting zien: terwijl de actrice het verhaal van Goethe vertelt en meerdere rollen in het drama vertolkt, zal de pianist de bijbehorende muzikale partijen spelen, waarbij kleuren en het "motief" van de personages worden opgeroepen. Tussen de paragrafen door leggen we u kort het belangrijkste aspect uit dat u moet weten over het verhaal van Faust. Het doel is om u alles te geven wat u rationeel en emotioneel nodig hebt om zoveel mogelijk te genieten van de uiteindelijke uitvoering van de Sonate van Liszt. Zo kan het publiek Faust’s verhaal tussende noten van Liszt actief volgen. We organiseren twee concerten voor u: één in Den Haag en één in Breda, beide eind april. We zouden het erg leuk vinden u daar te zien.

Wilt u helpen?

Ideeën zijn gratis, maar helaas zijn er kosten verbonden aan het realiseren ervan. Om dit project op het podium te krijgen, moeten we de zaalhuur, de benodigde materialen en instrumenten (vleugels, microfoons, enz.) en de vergoedingen voor muzikanten en technici betalen. We hebben niet het budget om al deze kosten te dekken. Uw hulp kan echter alles veranderen: met uw bijdrage kunt u ons werk steunen en ons de mogelijkheid geven om het werk voor u op het podium te brengen. Bovendien zijn er enkele beloningen voor uw donaties als u besluit ons te helpen: we vertrouwen erop dat u iets interessants kunt vinden. Natuurlijk bent u allemaal uitgenodigd voor onze concerten op het einde: we kijken ernaar uit u persoonlijk te ontmoeten.

Hello! We are Leone Monaco (classical pianist) and Elisa de Toffol (classical singer andactress), and we are happy to present our project: Liszt plays Faust, an original performance in which we want to tell you Faust story using Liszt’s music and Goethe’s drama. But first, let’s talk a bit about who we are.

Who are we?

Leone Monaco is a 24 years old Italian classical concert pianist, actually attending the second year of his Classical Piano Master study in Royal Conservatory in Den Haag. He earned a Bachelor ad a Master degree in Classical Piano in Italy, and he decided to come to the Netherlands to broaden his horizons and experimenting new performance possibilities. He performed in several concert halls in Italy, Spain and Netherlands, playing alone, in different chamber music groups and as soloist with the orchestra.

Since he was a teenager, he loved to connect music with other art forms, especially literature, and this brought him to explore the program music repertoire: musical compositions inspired by other works, as a painting or a literary work. In this field, he quickly fell in love with Franz Liszt’s music, studying, practicing and performing several works written by the Hungarian composer. His love for this repertoire brought him to experiment new performance possibilities with the goal to melt music and literature (in this case, theatre) directly on stage to make these connections apparent to the audience.

With a great love for theater in all its forms and for performances that promote contamination among the arts, Elisa De Toffol works as a classical singer and performer in some of the most important theater and festivals around the world: Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich (Germany); Di Menna Center, NY (USA); Salzburger Festspiele (Austria); Grachten Festival/EarlyMusicfestival (Utrecht); Opera Forward Festival/Wonderfeel (Netherlands).

In “Liszt plays Faust”, you will see her as actress in the triple role of Faust-Gretchen-Mephistopheles.

And now… the project!

We want to create a new concert format: an original performance created to accompany you with us into the story of Faust by joining two masterpieces of western music and literature: Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor and Goethe’s Faust. Through this performance we will narrate you the story of Faust and perform the most crucial scenes of Goethe’s drama. Afterwards, the piano Sonata will be performed for you, giving you the possibility to enjoy in its entirety the original music work without modifications. If the second part of the performance points the focus on the pure and “traditional” piano concert form, the first one shows of a more theatrical and original setting: while the actress will tell Goethe’s story interpreting multiple roles along the drama, the pianist will play the corresponding musical parts, evoking colors and the “motiv” of the characters. In between the sections, we will briefly explain you the most important aspect you need to know about the story of Faust. The goal is to give you everything you need rationally and emotionally to enjoy as much as possible the final performance of the Liszt’s Sonata. By doing so the audience will be able to actively follow Faust’s story between the notes of Liszt. We are organizing two concerts for you: one in Den Haag and one in Breda, both at the end of April. We would be very happy to see you there!

Ideas are free, but, unfortunately, realizing them has a cost. To bring this project on stage we need to pay the halls rents, the needed materials and instruments (grand pianos, microphones, etc.), and the fees for musicians and technicians, and we don’t have the budget to cover all these costs. Salve a tutti! Siamo Leone Monaco (pianista classico) e Elisa De Toffol (cantante classica ed attrice), e siamo felici di presentarvi il nostro progetto: Liszt plays Faust, uno spettacolo inedito nel quale vi racconteremo la storia di Faust tramite la musica di Liszt ed il dramma di Goethe. Ma prima, permetteteci di spiegarvi brevemente chi siamo.

Chi siamo?

Leone Monaco è un pianista concertista classico di 24 anni, attualmente iscritto al secondo anno del Master in Pianoforte Classico al Conservatorio Reale dell’Aia (Paesi Bassi). Ha già conseguito una Laurea Triennale ed una Laurea Biennale in Pianoforte in Italia, ed ha deciso di andare a studiare nei Paesi Bassi per allargare i suoi orizzonti e sperimentare nuove possibilità esecutive. Ha suonato in varie sale da concerto in Italia, Spagna e Paesi Bassi, esibendosi da solo, in ensemble da camera e come solista con l’orchestra.

Ha sempre amato associare la musica ad altre forme d’arte, ed in particolare alla letteratura. Questo lo ha portato ad esplorare la musica a programma: pezzi musicali ispirati da altre opere d’arte, come un dipinto o un’opera letteraria. In questo ambito, si è appassionato alla musica di Franz Liszt, studiando e suonando varie composizioni del maestro ungherese. La sua passione per questo repertorio lo ha potato a sperimentare nuove possibilità esecutive con l’obbiettivo di unire la musica e la letteratura (in questo caso, il teatro) per rendere questi collegamenti manifesti al pubblico direttamente sul palco.

Con profonda passione per il teatro in tutte le sue forme e per gli spettacoli in grado di promuovere la contaminazione fra le arti, Elisa De Toffol lavora come cantante ed attrice in alcuni fra i più importanti teatri e festival in tutto il mondo: Bayerische Staatsoper, Monaco di Baviera (Germania); Di Menna Center, New York (USA); Salzburger Festspiele (Austria); Grachten Festival/EarlyMusicfestival (Utrecht); Opera Forward Festival/Wonderfeel (Paesi Bassi).

Elisa De Toffol: “La voce è il mezzo più diretto, profondo e potente che abbiamo per comunicare. Usare la mia voce nel canto e nella recitazione mi permette di entrare in contatto con il pubblico attraverso vari strati di suoni ed emozioni.”

In “Liszt plays Faust”, la vedrete nel triplice ruolo di Faust-Margherita-Mefistofele.

Ed ora… il progetto!

La nostra idea è di creare una forma di concerto alternativa: uno spettacolo inedito creato per accompagnarvi con noi nella storia di Faust unendo due capolavori della musica e della letteratura occidentali: la Sonata per pianoforte in Si minore di Franz Liszt ed il Faust di Goethe. Durante lo spettacolo vi narreremo la storia di Faust e rappresenteremo le scene più importanti del dramma di Goethe. Alla fine ci sarà un’esecuzione completa della Sonata di Liszt per darvi la possibilità di godere della musica originale senza modifiche di sorta. Se la seconda parte dello spettacolo propone una forma di concerto più pura e “tradizionale”, la prima metà rivela un’impostazione più originale e teatrale: mentre l’attrice vi racconterà la storia scritta da Goethe interpretando vari ruoli lungo tutta l’opera teatrale, il pianista suonerà le parti musicali corrispondenti, evocando i colori ed i temi legati ai personaggi. Fra le sezioni recitate, vi spiegheremo brevemente gli aspetti più importanti da conoscere sulla storia di Faust. L’obbiettivo è darvi degli spunti razionali ed emotivi per godere al meglio dell’esecuzione finale della Sonata. In questo modo, il pubblico potrà seguire attivamente la storia di Faust attraverso le note di Liszt. Stiamo organizzando due concerti per voi: uno all’Aia ed uno a Breda, entrambi alla fine di Aprile. Vi aspettiamo numerosi!

Le idee sono gratis, ma purtroppo realizzarle ha un costo. Per poter portare questo progetto sul palco abbiamo bisogno di pagare l’affitto delle sale da concerto, i materiali e gli strumenti di cui abbiamo bisogno (due pianoforti a coda, microfoni, etc.), ed i compensi per artisti e tecnici, e non abbiamo il budget per coprire tutti questi costi.
