THE STORY / HET VERHAAL

Jouer, Jouer, Jouer is a story about dreams meeting reality.

The story is based on a playful craftsman called Lionel who made his dream of giving waste a second chance come true. He created an association and a small store in Paris where he sells products made of waste involving craftsmen and women from around the world that share his dream. Together with Alexandra, he makes customers feel welcome, supports creators to make a living and brings kids to laugh during workshops. And, now and then, they leave the busy city life behind and escape to an old house in the countryside.

While this may sound like a fairytale, their dream comes hand in hand with challenges. They are faced with different sides of reality that, once uncovered, shed a new light onto how living a dream can also look like.

Jouer, Jouer, Jouer is een verhaal over dromen die werkelijkheid ontmoeten.

Het verhaal is gebaseerd op een speelse vakman genaamd Lionel die zijn droom waarmaakte om afval een tweede kans te geven. Hij richtte een organisatie en een kleine winkel op in Parijs, waar hij producten verkoopt die zijn gemaakt van afval. Ambachtslieden van over de hele wereld met dezelfde visie zijn betrokken. Samen met Alexandra zorgt hij ervoor dat klanten zich welkom voelen, ondersteunt hij makers om geld te verdienen en brengt hij kinderen aan het lachen tijdens workshops. En af en toe laten ze het drukke stadsleven achter zich en ontsnappen ze naar een oud huis op het platteland.

Hoewel dit klinkt als een sprookje, gaat hun droom hand in hand met uitdagingen. Ze worden geconfronteerd met verschillende kanten van de werkelijkheid die, eenmaal blootgelegd, een nieuw licht werpen op hoe het leven van een droom er ook uit kan zien.

This story is particularly relevant for those of you that are actively involved in the world of sustainability.

We have observed that many purpose-driven individuals start off with a beautiful and much needed dream. However, once faced with reality, motivation and playfulness often fade. Perhaps it is because we forget that challenges are also an important part of reality. Through this documentary we invite you to create your own definition of "living your dream" and to include playfulness into your journey.

Dit verhaal is vooral relevant voor degenen onder u die actief betrokken zijn bij de wereld van duurzaamheid.

We hebben gemerkt dat veel doelgerichte individuen beginnen met een mooie en brandende droom. Echter, eenmaal geconfronteerd met de realiteit, vervagen motivatie en speelsheid vaak. Misschien komt het doordat we vergeten dat uitdagingen ook een belangrijk onderdeel van de werkelijkheid zijn. Door middel van deze documentaire nodigen we je uit om je eigen definitie van "je droom leven" te creëren en speelsheid in je reis op te nemen.

THE MAKERS / DE MAKERS

We are Siebe Pieters and Samuel Wagner and we teamed up during our CampusDoc minor at the Hogeschool Utrecht. A minor that allows us to learn about and dive into the entire process of documentary filmmaking. This includes the preparation, production, and postproduction of a documentary that we are passionate about. Jouer, Jouer, Jouer, is our opportunity to put what we learned into practice!

Wij zijn Siebe Pieters en Samuel Wagner en we werkten samen tijdens onze CampusDoc minor aan de Hogeschool Utrecht. Een minor die ons in staat stelt om het hele proces van het maken van documentairefilms te leren kennen en erin te duiken. Dit omvat de voorbereiding, productie en postproductie van een documentaire waar we gepassioneerd over zijn. Jouer, Jouer, Jouer, is onze kans om het geleerde in de praktijk te brengen!

Siebe (left) - I am a filmmaker and photographer based in Rotterdam. I experimented with video installations, fiction film and this time I wanted to focus entirely on making a documentary. When I met Lionel I was immediately fascinated by his personality and concept. I felt I had to tell this story. Every story has its own way of telling. To me, Lionel's story felt like the perfect fit for a documentary. The adventure that I have been able to experience with Sam during the making made me realise that this is exactly what I want to do in the coming years. The film inspires, realises and reveals. I was able to experience this myself while making the film and I want to convey the same feeling to you.

Ik ben een filmmaker en fotograaf gevestigd in Rotterdam. Ik experimenteerde met video-installaties, fictiefilm en dit keer wilde ik me volledig richten op het maken van een documentaire. Toen ik Lionel ontmoette, was ik meteen gefascineerd door zijn persoonlijkheid en concept. Ik voelde dat ik dit verhaal moest vertellen. Elk verhaal heeft zijn eigen manier van vertellen. Voor mij voelde het verhaal van Lionel als perfect geschikt voor een documentaire. Het avontuur dat ik tijdens het maken met Sam heb mogen beleven, deed me beseffen dat dit precies is wat ik de komende jaren wil gaan doen. De film inspireert, realiseert en onthult. Dat heb ik zelf mogen ervaren tijdens het maken van de film en dat gevoel wil ik ook op jou overbrengen.

Sam (right) - I am a Global Project and Change Management student with a deep passion for photography and film. For me, the camera is a beautiful tool to creatively convey stories with deeper meaning. This documentary is the most important project for me so far as it offers a much needed and refreshing alternative to conventional sustainability documentaries. I longed for an authentic, raw and humble documentary and I am so grateful to now create it together with Lionel, Alexandra and Siebe. I cannot wait to share this documentary with you!

Ik ben een Global Project and Change Management student met een diepe passie voor fotografie en film. Voor mij is de camera een prachtig middel om op een creatieve manier verhalen met een diepere betekenis over te brengen. Deze documentaire is erg belangrijk omdat het een verfrissend alternatief biedt voor conventionele duurzaamheidsdocumentaires. Ik verlangde naar een authentieke, rauwe en bescheiden documentaire en ik ben zo dankbaar dat ik die nu samen met Lionel, Alexandra en Siebe kan maken. Ik kan niet wachten om deze documentaire met jullie te delen!
