Begin en einde: Al vijfentwintig jaar maakte ik foto's van mijn ouders in de paradijselijke omgeving van ons Russische zomerhuis in een poging om mijn eigen geheugen en onze familiegeschiedenis te beïnvloeden door de kracht van beeld en wishful thinking, om zo een ​​helende familiemythe te creëren. Door de hoge leeftijd van mijn ouders en de Russische oorlog in Oekraïne is het tijd om dit langdurige project af te ronden. Dat doe ik met een film, een filminstallatie in vier delen, een boek en een audioboek.

Donaties: Door mee te doen help je de allerlaatste fase van dit project af te ronden. De donaties worden gebruikt om de recente stijging in de drukkosten op te vangen en de productie van het audioboek mogelijk te maken – meer specifiek: de kosten van het opnemen van mijn stem, de compositie van muziek en het sounddesign. Unreal Estate: In Unreal Estate wordt de fragiliteit en tijdelijkheid met levendigheid en humor ontkend; voorwerpen en handelingen krijgen betekenis, groeien buiten proportie en worden metaforen voor de drang om dingen die onmogelijk te behouden zijn veilig te stellen. In dit proces is de rol van mijn ouders veranderd van gewillige personages naar actieve co-auteurs. Het film- en boekproject, een uitbreiding van mijn fotografische oeuvre, sluit de lange periode van werken met mijn ouders af en is een ode aan onze kleine familie, mijn personages en hun geschiedenis die mij heeft gevormd als persoon en kunstenaar. Ik ben het enige kind van twee oorlogskinderen die concentratie- en werkkampen overleefden, en een etnische mix van vijf nationaliteiten (Joods, Pools en Duits, Tataar en Russisch) en van vier religies (mijn voornaam is Russisch-orthodox, mijn achternaam moslim). Ik werk in Nederland, woon in België, en heb een dubbele nationaliteit (Nederlands en Russisch). Mijn ouders zijn nu, gelukkig maar, in Israël.

Unreal Unreal Estate: Door de oorlog is Unreal Estate nu feitelijk ‘unreal’ geworden. Mijn ouders kunnen waarschijnlijk niet terug naar huis. De horror van hun geschiedenis wordt in real time herhaald. Als kind en familie van slachtoffers van oorlog, Holocaust en goelag- en werkkampen weet ik hoe lang het trauma in generaties doorwerkt. In mijn werk probeerde ik voor ons een wereld te creëren waarin wij de trauma’s niet ontkennen maar er zo goed en gelukkig mogelijk mee leven en zo kunnen helen. Door liefde, empathie en steun voor elkaar, en door het autobiografische verhaal te blijven herschrijven. Dit is mijn gereedschap, mijn drijfveer, mijn troost en mijn hoop, en dit wil ik graag delen. Onze overlevingsstrategie kan misschien ook anderen helpen.

Bijna af: Het is al vijf jaar dat ik aan de films en het boek werk en het is bijna af. Binnen twee maanden zijn alle delen definitief afgerond, tenminste als ik de financiering voor elkaar krijg. Voor het eerst vertel ik meer over mijn familiegeschiedenis dat altijd al voelbaar was in mijn foto’s maar nooit voluit uitgesproken, en over de geschiedenis van mijn naam, die zonder russificatie heel anders had geklonken. Maar er zijn genoeg leuke en grappige verhalen en heel veel groen en nog meer appels, en muziek van Joachim Badenhorst, om de films en het boek met plezier te kunnen bekijken, lezen en beluisteren.

For twenty-five years I have been making photos of my parents in the paradisiacal surroundings of our Russian summerhouse in an attempt to influence my own memory and our family history through the power of image and wishful thinking, to create a family myth that could be healing. Due to my parents’ advanced age and the Russian war in Ukraine, it is time to finish this long-term project. It consists of a film, a film installation in four parts, a book, and an audiobook, all of which has taken me five years to make so far, but I am almost done.

By donating, you would help me to complete the final phase of this project. The donations will be used to cover the recent rise in printing costs and to enable audiobook production, specifically the costs of recording my voice, composing music, and sound design. I would be very grateful if you could support what is probably my life’s work. You can do this by choosing one of the rewards or sharing the campaign with others and on social media. All contributors receive updates and invitations to future Unreal Estate exhibitions, film screenings, and book presentations.

Unreal Estate is about the fragility of a temporary situation and using vibrancy and humor to deny it; about the visible synchronization of the characters with their environment; the particular time structure inherent to a summer day spent in a country house; the way objects and actions acquire meaning, grow out of proportion, and become metaphors; the roles that the characters take on themselves, voluntarily, with gratitude and pleasure; about wishful thinking and the urge to secure things that are impossible to keep.

This film and book project, an extension of my photographic oeuvre, concludes the long period of working with my parents and is an ode to my characters and their history, which have shaped me as a person and an artist. I am the only child of two concentration and labor camp survivors, from a family of Holocaust and Gulag victims, and an ethnic mix of five nationalities (Jewish, Polish and German, Tatar and Russian) and four religions (my first name is Russian Orthodox; my last name is Muslim). But there are also enough funny and heartwarming stories, a lot of greenness and even more apples, and music by Joachim Badenhorst, to be able to enjoy watching, reading, and listening.

The real Unreal Estate ended suddenly, aggressively, and earlier than I had anticipated.
Unreal Estate was meant to drown out my parents’ painful experiences with the proof of our being together in our timeless garden. Not to forget, but to change our life story into a happy one, which we built together slowly and consistently over many years.
It feels like Unreal Estate is now contaminated by our nationality and our past.
Though not exactly ethnically Russian, we are still undeniably products of Soviet history.
This is something we cannot turn back or turn our backs to. To maintain and reinvent our place of refuge, I need to exorcise those ghosts. But not give up on the things I hold dear and that made me who I am.
I don’t know how to do this yet.
