Short film: the beast in my belly.

Ik ben Gyan Exalto en ik begon met schrijven van mijn eerste korte film en afstudeerfilm in het laatste blok van de film actors academy amsterdam, genaamd ‘mijn persoonlijke korte film’. Ik ben dit jaar afgestudeerd en als afstudeerproject wil ik 'the beast in my belly' maken, een korte film over de nasleep en de psychologische impact van seksueel misbruik en gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen.

De film

Het verhaal volgt Sophie, een jonge vrouw, die tijdens een avondje uit wordt achtervolgd door een telefoontje die ze eerder die avond kreeg. Hoe meer ze haar verleden probeert te negeren, hoe meer het samenkomt met het heden. Wanneer een groep jongens een dronken meisje bedreigt, wordt Sophie gedwongen haar duistere kant onder ogen te zien.

Gebaseerd op een situatie die velen zullen herkennen uit het nachtleven of het leven in het algemeen, verkent de film zowel verdrongen trauma's als de positie van het 'slachtoffer'. Wat als het slachtoffer het heft in eigen hand neemt? Wat als we de uitkomst niet leuk vinden, of wat als we dat wel doen? Volg Sophie op haar verwrongen reis en laat die confrontatie je leiden tot het herzien van je eigen ervaringen.

Het team

Rianne Kolenbrander en Sanne Ottenhof zijn de twee geweldige regisseurs met wie ik aan dit project werk. Het zijn twee artistieke individuen die net zo veel in dit project zijn geïnvesteerd als ik. Tijdens het schrijfproces deelden we ervaringen die leidden tot de uiteindelijke visie van deze film. Sanne Walet wordt de director of photography die helpt onze ideeën op het witte doek te brengen, terwijl Lauren Walet het hoofd van de productie is. In een gepassioneerd team dat voornamelijk uit vrouwen bestaat, streven we ernaar om onze ervaringen terug te laten komen in het verhaal van Sophie.

Waarom doneren?

Het is oké om niet oké te zijn. Om je niet goed te voelen. Je bent niet alleen. We hebben de neiging om pijn met ons mee te dragen. Dat is een zware last. Het verandert je. Maar er schuilt ook een kracht in pijn. Deze film laat zien hoeveel impact pijn kan hebben, hoe het je mentaal gevangen kan houden, maar ook bevrijden. We geloven echt dat dit verhaal, dit universele verhaal, verteld moet worden en we kunnen je hulp heel goed gebruiken.

Maar een film maken is duur. We gebruiken je donaties voor alles wat nodig is om een film te maken: van crew tot rekwisieten, gehuurde lenzen tot locatie en nog veel meer. Het creatieve team en ik besteden onze tijd vrijwillig aan het project en willen dat het zo goed mogelijk wordt, wat betekent dat we bepaalde apparatuur moeten huren, maar ook gewoon benodigdheden moeten kopen. We kunnen jouw steun, hoe groot of klein dan ook, heel goed gebruiken om onze visie en het verhaal van Sophie tot leven te brengen!

I am Gyan Exalto and I started a writing journey for my first short film and graduation film in the last module of the film actors academy Amsterdam, named ‘my personal short film’. I graduated this year and this is the final bit of my journey from school. As my final project I want to make 'the beast in my belly’, a short film about the aftermath and the psychological impact of sexual abuse and it is based on true events.

The film

The story follows Sophie, a young woman, who during a night out is haunted by a phone call she received earlier. The more she tries to ignore her past, the more it merges with the present. When a group of guys is threatening a drunk girl, Sophie is forced to face her dark side.

Based on a situation that many will recognise from nightlife or life in general, the film explores repressed trauma, as well as the position of the 'victim'. What if the victim took matters into their own hands? What if we don't like the outcome, or what if we do? Follow Sophie on her warped hero's journey and consider your own experiences by being confronted with hers.

The team

Rianne Kolenbrander en Sanne Ottenhof are the two amazing directors who I am working with on this project. They are two artistic individuals whom are truly invested in this project just as much as I am. In the writing process, we shared experiences that led to the final vision of this film. Sanne Walet will be the director of photography that aids in bringing our ideas to the screen, while Lauren Walet is the head of production. In a passionate team consisting of mainly women, we aim to echo our experiences in Sophie's story.

Why donate?

It's ok not to be ok. To not feel fine. You are not the only one. Pain is powerful, we tend to carry it with us, and that is a heavy burden. It changes you. But pain can also give you strength. This film shows you the impact of pain, how it can take hold of you mentally, but that it can also be freeing. We truly believe that this story, this universal story, needs to be told and we could really use your help.

But making a film is expensive. We will use your donations for everything necessary for making a film: from crew to props, rented lenses to the location and more. The creative team and I are dedicating our time to the project voluntarily and want it to be as good as possible, which means renting certain equipment and simply buying supplies. We could therefore really use your support, how big or small, in bringing our vision and Sophie's story to life!
