MUSICAL FILM FESTIVAL
5 & 6 juni 2022

Het Musical Film Festival wordt dit jaar voor het eerst georganiseerd ter ere van het 95-jarige bestaan van het genre zelf. In 1927 verscheen The Jazz Singer als eerste film met geluid en luidde het genre in. Tot op heden worden deze films nog steeds gemaakt! Een terugblik geeft daarom veel inzicht in de vorderende filmtechnieken en de tijd waarin ze gemaakt werden. Los van dat zijn musicals over het algemeen ongelofelijke fijne feelgood films voor jong en oud.

Twee dagen lang draaien tien klassieke Franse en Hollywoodmusicals in De Roode Bioscoop in Amsterdam. Met een bijdrage via voordekunst kunnen wij het festival voor iedereen toegankelijk maken! Omdat de enige inkomstenbron voor dit evenement de tickets zijn, kunnen we weinig ruimte aanbieden voor bijvoorbeeld studententarieven.

Uw aanvulling via voordekunst zou betekenen dat er ook bezoekers kunnen komen zonder ruime portemonnee. Dit zou onze doelen educatie, entertainment, en sociaal alleen maar verder versterken.

De meeste kosten zitten in het verkrijgen van de filmlicenties, die hoog zijn voor klassiekers zoals wij draaien. Een klein deel van de kosten zit in de marketing. Verdere kosten zijn er niet.

OVER MIJ

Mijn naam is Sara en het Musical Film Festival is mijn afstudeerproject. Ik doe een MBA in Performing Arts Management & Cultural Industries in Parijs! De studie schakelt tussen management en theorie over podiumkunsten.

Als kind van de Disneygeneratie ben ik opgegroeid met musicalfilms en de liefde daarvoor is nooit over gegaan. Bij dit afstudeerproject wil ik mijn interesse samenbrengen met wat ik heb geleerd. De klassieke musical films kijk ik niet alleen met plezier, maar omdat het een genre is dat al sinds 1927 bestaat is er ook een mooie ontwikkeling in de filmtechnieken te zien! Het Parijse filmlandschap heeft mij hierbij geïnspireerd.

Met het festival hoop ik samen met een zaal vol filmliefhebbers van de musicals te genieten! Hoe groter de steun voor dit project, hoe meer mensen hier toegang toe kunnen hebben. Of je nu de filmgeschiedenis wil leren, nostalgische films wil bekijken, of gewoon weg wil dromen bij een wereld in Technicolor, Audrey Hepburn in Parijs, of Fred Astaire's tapdansen, iedereen moet welkom zijn.

ENTERTAINMENT

Het programma van het Musical Film Festival bestaat uit tien films die zijn uitgebracht tussen 1935 en 2016. Over het algemeen is de musical film een tomeloos positieve en humoristische film. De ondersteuning van de muziek versterkt de bijkomende emotie en kan daarnaast de emotie ook weer oproepen bij het terugluisteren. Deze films zijn hoe dan ook heerlijk om te kijken, maar nóg fijner in een bioscoop! De emoties werken aanstekelijk en dat maakt de collectieve ervaring zo veel rijker dan wanneer deze films in bed op Netflix worden gekeken - áls ze al aangeboden worden.

Het entertainende aspect van dit festival is geïnspireerd op de Parijse bioscopen. Klassieke films zijn hier een standaard onderdeel van de programmering! Dat is een fenomeen dat wij in Nederland niet zo kennen - klassieke films worden gezien als speciale programma's en in het kader van klassieke musicals worden met name de publieksfavorieten op het grote beeld vertoond. Er is zo veel te ontdekken in dit genre en de ene film is nog fijner dan de andere! Dus of je nu op zoek bent naar een vrolijke film waar je van houdt, of op zoek bent naar een nieuwe soortgelijke ervaring, dit festival biedt het.

EDUCATIE

Het educatieve aspect is gebaseerd op de filosofie die Damien Chazelle in La La Land belichaamde: men moet de geschiedenis kennen om deel uit te maken van de toekomst. Hij heeft veel hoogtepunten uit de geschiedenis van de musicalfilm in zijn werk opgenomen, dus het bestuderen van deze referenties zal algemene kennis over de geschiedenis van de musicalfilm en specifiek begrip van de getoonde hoogtepunten opleveren.

Een onderdeel van de educatie is de programmering. Die is geïnspireerd op de educatie van de Parijse Nouvelle Vague regisseurs in de Cinémateque. Zij spendeerden al hun tijd in de bioscoop en keken films van alle tijdperken, genres en landen. Zo ontdekten zij karakteristieken in het werk van de regisseurs. Door twee dagen continue films te programmeren van verschillende tijdsperioden, wordt voor de bezoekers eenzelfde effect gecreëerd.

SOCIAAL

Het laatste, sociale aspect is gebaseerd op het samenbrengen van de filmliefhebbers, omdat de toekomst niet alleen bij de nieuwe generatie ligt, maar in een samenwerking. Het is dus ons doel om de gevestigde professionals te mengen met de nieuwe generatie. Bij aankoop van een ticket wordt de mogelijkheid geboden om een theaterdiner te gebruiken in het aangrenzende café, en we moedigen ons publiek aan om na de voorstelling een drankje te drinken en de referenties te bespreken. Hopelijk kunnen we elkaar leren kennen en samen van de films genieten.

Help us make the Musical Film Festival at the Roode Cinema a reality!

The Musical Film Festival is being held for the first time this year to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the genre itself. In 1927, The Jazz Singer appeared as the first film with sound and ushered in the genre. To this day, these films are still being made! Therefore, a look back gives a lot of insight into the advancing film techniques and the time in which they were made. Apart from that, musicals in general are incredibly fine feel-good films for young and old.

For two days, ten classic French and Hollywood musicals will be shown in De Roode Bioscoop in Amsterdam. With a contribution via voordekunst, we can make the festival accessible for everyone! Because the only source of income for this event is the tickets, we can't offer much in the way of, for example, student rates.

Your addition via voordekunst would mean that visitors without an ample wallet could also come. This would only further strengthen our goals of education, entertainment, and social.

Most of the costs are in getting the film licenses, which are high for classics like ours. A small portion of the cost is in marketing. There are no further costs.

ABOUT ME

My name is Sara and the Musical Film Festival is my graduation project. I am doing an MBA in Performing Arts Management & Cultural Industries in Paris! The degree switches between management and performing arts theory. As a child of the Disney generation, I grew up with musical films and the love for them has never gone away!

As a final project, I want to bring together my interest with what I have learned. Not only do I enjoy watching the classic musical films, but because it is a genre that has been around since 1927, there has been a nice evolution in film techniques! The Parisian film landscape has inspired me in this regard.

With the festival, I hope to enjoy the musicals with a room full of film lovers! The greater the support for this project, the more people can have access to it. Whether you want to learn film history, watch nostalgic films, or just dream away at a world in Technicolor, Audrey Hepburn in Paris, or Fred Astaire's tap dancing, everyone should be welcome.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Musical Film Festival program consists of ten films released between 1935 and 2016. In general, the musical film is an unbridled positive and humorous film. The support of the music enhances the additional emotion and, in addition, can evoke the emotion again when listening back. These films are great to watch anyway, but even better in a movie theater! The emotions are contagious and that makes the collective experience so much richer than when these films are watched in bed on Netflix - if they are offered at all.

The entertaining aspect of this festival is inspired by Parisian cinemas. Classic films are a standard part of the programming here! This is a phenomenon that we are not familiar with in the Netherlands - classic films are seen as special programs and, in the context of classic musicals, it is mainly the audience favorites that are shown on the big screen. There is so much to discover in this genre and some films are more delightful than others! So whether you're looking for an upbeat film you love, or looking for a new similar experience, this festival offers it.

EDUCATION

The educational aspect is based on the philosophy embodied by Damien Chazelle in La La Land: one must know history to be part of the future. He has included many highlights from the history of the musical film in his work, so studying these references will provide general knowledge of the history of the musical film and specific understanding of the highlights shown.

One component of education is programming. This is inspired by the education of the Parisian Nouvelle Vague directors at the Cinémateque. They spent all their time in the cinema, watching films from all eras, genres and countries. In this way they discovered characteristics in the directors' work. By programming films from different time periods for two days continuously, the same effect is created for the visitors.

SOCIAL

The last, social aspect is based on bringing the film lovers together, because the future lies not only with the new generation, but in a collaboration. Thus, our goal is to mix the established professionals with the new generation. With the purchase of a ticket, we offer the opportunity to have a theater dinner in the adjacent café, and we encourage our audience to have a drink after the screening and discuss the references. Hopefully we can get to know each other and enjoy the films together.
