ASCENDING
is een grote en groene kunstinstallatie van staal, jute en 220 winde planten die samen een gemeenschappelijke ruimte worden voor reflectie, bewondering en troost. Het is een gastvrije ruimte, waar iedereen welkom is.
ASCENDING zal van mei tot oktober zeven dagen per week gratis te bezoeken zijn in de NDSM Loods op de NDSM werf in Amsterdam Noord.
Wij hebben bijna alle benodigde financiering rond om ASCENDING te kunnen maken. Wij missen alleen nog 5000 euro.

Wie zijn wij?
Wij zijn Balthasar Prinsen, Sarah Payton en Thomas Akerboom. Wij hebben alle drie een eigen werkruimte in de Kunststad in de NDSM Loods. Balthasar maakt kostuums voor theater, interieur design items en textiel architectuur; Sarah maakt kunstwerken en werkt vaak samen met anderen als producent en curator en Thomas maakt meubels en andere producten van hout.
Waarom maken wij ASCENDING?
Wij geloven dat kunst een essentiële en transformatieve potentie heeft om troost en afleiding te bieden in moeilijke tijden.
Met ASCENDING willen wij een uitnodigende gemeenschappelijke ruimte creëren waarin alles draait om verbeelding.
In Amsterdam wonen nu mensen uit de hele wereld, met veel verschillende levenshoudingen. Sommige mensen zijn diep religieus en anderen sterk seculair. Soms lijkt het of er niet meer zoiets bestaat als een gedeelde waarheid.
Wij geloven dat kunst de mogelijkheid biedt om mensen met elkaar te verbinden. Met ASCENDING geven wij dit geloof vorm.
Ook maken wij een statement voor het behouden van open, onbenutte ruimte waar geld, commercie en consumptie niet de bepalende factoren zijn.
Toen de eerste groep kunstenaars naar de NDSM werf kwamen, wilden ze niet alleen betaalbare ateliers voor zichzelf bouwen. Ze wilden ook gesamtkunstwerk maken in de vorm van een nieuw soort stad: de Kunststad. In hun droom zou deze stad gastvrij en open zijn en een plek bieden aan alle mensen uit de maatschappij voor inspiratie, verbeelding en afleiding. De lege ruimte achter in het gebouw was voor de pioniers een inspiratiebron; door de omvang, hoogte en lichtinval werd het ervaren als iets spiritueels. Wij delen nog steeds deze visie.
ASCENDING is dan ook een uitnodiging aan anderen om de NDSM Loods te zien als iets van ons allemaal. Wij geloven dat mensen zulke ruimtes en grote kunstwerken nodig hebben.
Hoe ziet ASCENDING eruit?
ASCENDING wordt 20 meter lang, 8 meter breed en 15 meter hoog. 11 plantenbakken, elk 4 meter lang, hangen drie meter boven de grond. Vanuit de bakken rijzen honderden windeplanten omhoog langs staalkabels naar een jute overkapping van geometrisch patronen. Beneden wordt de ruimte omsloten met jute panelen waarin abstracte symbolen van wiskundige harmonie worden verwerkt.
Waar komt ASCENDING?
ASCENDING wordt gerealiseerd in een grote lege ruimte achter in de NDSM Loods, een voormalige scheepsbouwloods aan het IJ in Amsterdam Noord. Ooit werden hier immense zeewaardige schepen gebouwd, maar al 20 jaar is de loods een thuis voor 200 kunstenaars, ambachtslieden en creatieve makers.
In de ruimte van ASCENDING gaan wij ook anderen uitnodigen om op te treden of werk te laten zien - gastkunstenaars, een kinder programma, dichters, dansers of muzikanten.
ASCENDING heeft jou nodig!
ASCENDING bestaat uit 220 zelfgekweekte windeplanten, 1500 kilo aarde, 70 meter houten plantenbakken, honderden meters jute en maar liefs 4500 meter staalkabel en hennep touw. Daarbij komen veel kleine materialen zoals staalklemmen en fournituren om alles in elkaar te zetten. Het ophangen vraag om technisch expertise en grote apparatuur zoals hoogwerkers.
Voor dit alles hebben we veel geld nodig! Gelukkig zijn wij al goed onderweg met steun van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, het prijsgeld van de NDSM Open Call en enkele lokale sponsors.
Wij hebben nog €5000 nodig om ASCENDING te maken. Daarvoor hebben wij jouw steun nodig!
Wij zijn dankbaar voor alle donaties! Hiermee kunnen wij weer een klos garen, een rol jute of een haspel staalkabel kopen. Voor donateurs die 20 euro of meer schenken hebben wij verschillende tegenprestaties bedacht.

ASCENDING
is a large, living green art installation of steel, jute and 220 bindweed plants that together form a common space for reflection, wonder and solace. ASCENDING will be free to visit seven days a week from May to October in the NDSM Loods at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam’s northern quarter.
We have almost all the necessary financing to make ASCENDING. We are only missing 5000 euro.

Who are we?
We are Balthasar Prinsen, Sarah Payton and Thomas Akerboom. We each have our own workspace in the Art City in the NDSM Loods. Balthasar makes costumes for theater, interior design items and textile architecture; Sarah creates works of art and often collaborates with others as a producer and curator; Thomas makes furniture and other products from wood.
Why are we making ASCENDING?
We believe that art has an essential and transformative potential to provide comfort and distraction in difficult times. With ASCENDING we want to create an inviting communal space which revolves around imagination.
In Amsterdam there are people from all over the world, with many different attitudes to life. Some people are deeply religious and others highly secular. Sometimes it seems that there is no such thing as a shared truth anymore.
We believe that art has the potential to connect people. With ASCENDING we give shape to this belief.
With ASCENDING we also make a plea for preserving open, unused space and we a statement about the need for spaces where money, commerce and consumption are not the determining factors.
When the first group of artists came to the NDSM shipyard, they wanted not only to build affordable studios for themselves, but also to create a "Gesamtkunstwerk" in the form of a new kind of city: the Art City. In their dream, this city would be welcoming and open, providing a place for all people in society for inspiration, imagination, distraction and play. The empty space at the back of the building was a source of inspiration for the pioneers; because of its size, height and the way light falls it was experienced as something spiritual.
We still share this vision. ASCENDING is therefore also an invitation to others to see the NDSM Loods as something for all of us. We believe that people need such spaces and large works of art.
Wat does ASCENDING look like?
ASCENDING will be 20 meters long, 8 meters wide and 15 meters high. 11 planters, each 4 meters long, hang three meters above the ground. Hundreds of bindweed plants rise from the containers along steel cables to a jute roof of geometric patterns. Downstairs, the space is enclosed with jute panels in which abstract symbols of mathematical harmony are incorporated.
In the space of ASCENDING we will also invite others to perform or show work - guest artists, a children's program, poets, dancers or musicians.
ASCENDING is an accessible space, where everyone is welcome.
Where will ASCENDING be realized?
ASCENDING will be realized in a large empty space at the back of the NDSM Loods, a former shipbuildingwarehouse on the IJ in the north of Amsterdam. Immense seaworthy ships were once built here, but the warehouse has for 20 years been home to 200 artists, artisans and creative makers.
ASCENDING needs you!
ASCENDING is made from 220 bindweed plants, 1500 kilos of soil, 70 meters of wooden planters, 1200 meters of jute rollen and no less than 4500 meters of steelcable and hemp rope. In addition, there are many small materials, from steelclamps to needles and thread, needed to assemble everything. Hanging the installation requires technical expertise and large equipment such as cherry pickers.
For all this we need a lot of money! Fortunately, we are already well on the way with support from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK), a local prize called the NDSM Open Call and some local sponsors.
We still need €5000 to make ASCENDING. For that we need your support!
We are grateful for all donations. With your support we can buy another roll of jute or a reel of steel cable. To offer our thanks we have thought up a number of gifts to offer donors who contribute 20 euros or more.
