Film motivatie en over Jos Mauro Witteveen

Je draai vinden in een nieuwe omgeving kan erg lastig zijn. Als de enige student uit mijn klas met een multiculturele achtergrond voelde ik mij op een onbewuste manier verplicht om dit aspect in mijn werk naar voren te brengen. Mijn moeder komt uit Ecuador en mijn vader uit Nederland. Ik ben in Ecuador geboren maar vanaf jongst af ben ik vaak verhuisd, binnen Ecuador, van Ecuador naar Bolivia, van Bolivia terug naar Ecuador en een aantal jaar later, toen ik 18 was naar Nederland. Ik zag veel mensen in mijn huis komen en vertrekken en moest vaak afscheid nemen van mensen en plekken waar ik nog niet klaar voor was.

Het gegeven van het bespieden van mensen is in een van de eerste weken dat ik naar Nederland verhuisde ontstaan. Ik liep regelmatig rond in de wijk waar ik woonde en vond het fascinerend om te zien dat je vanaf de straat de binnenkant van de huizen kon zien. Om te kunnen zien wat mensen in hun huiselijke routine deden en hoe de huizen van binnen er uit zagen was voor mij een bijzondere gegeven, ik voelde me toen heel ver van de mensen maar fysiek was ik zo dichtbij. Ik was gewend aan Ecuador, waar alle huizen een buiten muur hebben voor privacy en preventie van criminaliteit. Ik keek vaak naar binnen omdat ik nieuwsgierig was aan de verschillen van de huizen binnen, tot mijn tante waar ik toen de tijd bij woonde, vertelde dat dat eigenlijk onbeleefd was. Mensen zaten er niet op te wachten om bekeken te worden. Ik begreep het eerlijk gezegd niet aan het begin, ‘daarvoor heb je gordijnen’ dacht ik. Ik keek zonder slechte intentie naar binnen en vond het jammer dat ik het niet kon blijven doen maar sindsdien ontstond het idee om hierover een verhaal te vertellen of een film te maken.

Vier jaar later begon ik aan de eerste versie van mijn verhaal voor een opdracht van mijn minor ‘Art of Writing’. Hier pakte ik het element van door de ramen kijken, en heb ik het naar bespieden vertaald. Daarna ging ik in de plot erg intuïtief aan de slag. Het was een verhaal die niet uit mijn hoofd kwam maar uit mijn buik. Een verhaal die eruit moest komen. Met terugwerkende kracht ben ik de identiteit van de personage gaan vormen en de reden van zijn acties zin gaan geven.

Stan van Lingen - Editor

Mijn naam is Stan van Lingen. Ik studeer dit jaar af aan de HKU als filmeditor met o.a. de film Ventanas Abiertas.

Hoeveel ik ook monteer, editen blijft een soort magisch effect hebben. Hoe zoveel mooie op zichzelf staande fragmenten samen een verhaal vertellen en emoties kunnen oproepen. Dit is iets wat mij al langere tijd enorm fascineert en waar ook mijn kracht ligt, een mooi verhaal uit al dit materiaal zien te toveren.

Open Windows zal een film zijn waarvan veel visueel verteld wordt, voor mij de uitgelezen kans om mezelf uit te dagen om door middel van montage dit persoonlijke verhaal zo sterk mogelijk over te brengen.

Huub van den Akker - Cinematography

Ik ben Huub en ik studeer dit jaar af als Director of Photography. Mijn stijl valt te omschrijven als een spel van donker en licht. De beelden die ik maak zijn expressief in licht, kleur en contrast. Licht speelt in mijn werk een grote rol. Mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar een donkere, contrastrijke stijl waarin warme tinten de personages belichten. De emotie die het verhaal bij mij oproept probeer ik over te brengen in de kaders en belichting die ik gebruik. De visie van de regisseur staat bij mij altijd op één en ik zie mijn werk ook altijd in dienst van de regisseur en het gevoel dat hij/zij wil overbrengen.

Dit project inspireert mij door de combinatie van stijlvolle en rauwe scènes. Het contrast in het leven van het hoofdpersonage vraagt ook om een visuele stijl die hierop inspeelt. De stad is het speelveld voor Daniel, tegenover zijn dagelijkse leven op zijn werk. Dit contrast is visueel zichtbaar. De stad wordt stijlvol, rustig en abstract gebruikt en dient als canvas voor het personage om zich doorheen te bewegen. Daartegenover zijn de scènes op zijn werk juist chaotisch en onhandig. Het personage voelt zich hier niet op zijn plek en dat gevoel moet de kijker visueel ook meekrijgen. De combinatie en contrasten binnen de film motiveren mij om visueel hier het meest uit te halen. De film zal visueel aantrekkelijk worden, maar altijd met de focus op het gevoel van het personage.

Motivation and about Jos Mauro Witteveen

Finding your way in a new environment can be very difficult. As the only student with a multicultural background in my class, I felt unconsciously the need to bring this aspect forward in my work. My mother is from Ecuador and my father is from the Netherlands. I was born in Ecuador but from a very young age I moved around a lot, within Ecuador, from Ecuador to Bolivia, from Bolivia back to Ecuador, and a few years later when I was 18 to the Netherlands. At home, I also saw many people come and go and often had to say goodbye to people and places I wasn't ready to say goodbye to.

The aspect of spying on people arose in one of the first weeks I moved to the Netherlands. I regularly walked around the neighborhood where I lived and found it fascinating to see that from the street you could see the inside of the houses. To be able to see what people were doing in their home routine and what the houses looked like inside was very particular to me, I felt very far from the people at the time but physically we were so close. I was used to Ecuador, where all houses have an outside wall for privacy and crime prevention. I often looked inside because I was curious to see the differences in how people lived until my aunt who I lived with at the time told me that was actually not very proper to do. People didn't like to be looked at when they were home. I honestly didn't understand it at first, 'that's what you have curtains for' I thought to myself. I looked inside without any bad intentions and thought it was a shame that I couldn't keep doing it, but since then, I got the idea to tell a story or make a film about this small cultural aspect.

Four years later I started working on the first version of my story for an assignment of my minor 'Art of Writing'. Here I took the element of looking through the windows and translated that into spying. Then I got into the plot very intuitively. It was a story that came not from my head but from my gut. A story that had to come out. Retroactively, I started to form the character's identity and make sense of the reason for his actions.

Stan van Lingen - Editor

My name is Stan van Lingen. I am graduating this year from HKU as a film editor with, among other films, Ventanas Abiertas.

No matter how much I edit, editing still has a kind of magical effect. How so many beautiful independent fragments together tell a story and can evoke emotions. This is something that has fascinated me for a long time and is also my strength: to conjure up a beautiful story from all this material.

Ventanas Abiertas will be a film that tells a lot of things visually, the perfect opportunity for me to challenge myself to use editing to get this personal story across as strongly as possible.

Huub van den Akker - Cinematography

I am Huub and I am graduating this year as a Director of Photography. My style can be described as a play of dark and light. The images I make are expressive in light, color, and contrast. Light plays a big role in my work. My preference is for a dark, high-contrast style in which warm tones illuminate the characters. I try to convey the emotion that the story evokes in me in the frames and lighting that I use. I always put the director's vision first and I also always see my work in service of the director and the feeling he/she wants to convey.

This project inspires me with its combination of stylish and raw scenes. The contrast in the life of the main character also calls for a visual style that responds to this. The city is the playground for Daniel, versus his daily life at work. This contrast is visually apparent. The city is used stylishly, calmly, and abstractly, serving as a canvas for the character to move through. In contrast, the scenes at his work are chaotic and awkward. The character feels out of place here, and the viewer needs to get that feeling visually as well. The combination and contrasts within the film motivate me to get the most out of this visually. The film will be visually appealing, but always with the focus on the feeling of the character.
