DOUBLE DARE

Wie ben ik?
Mijn naam is Peter Willems (22). Ik ben zanger en contrabassist en studeer beide vakken aan de jazz-afdeling van het conservatorium van Maastricht. In 2019 won ik de 2e prijs bij het prestigieuze ‘Prinses Christina Jazz Concours’. “Star potential; dat is het woord dat blijft hangen als het stof is neergedaald na zijn optreden…”, aldus de jury. Sindsdien heb ik meerdere studietrips naar New York kunnen maken, en ik heb intussen al op een aantal gave locaties gespeeld, waaronder het North Sea Jazz Festival, Music Meeting, en So What’s Next.

DOUBLE DARE & Gary Lucas.
Het album DOUBLE DARE is echt een speciaal project geworden.
Een korte toelichting hoe dit duo-project tot stand is gekomen:

Na het Prinses Christina Jazz Concours, initieerde radiomaker Co de Kloet een ontmoeting tussen mij en de Amerikaanse gitaarvirtuoos Gary Lucas (69). Een wereldberoemde gitarist bekend van zijn werk met onder andere Jeff Buckley en Captain Beefheart, die al 35 albums op zijn naam heeft staan en wereldwijd optreedt. Ik speelde in New York voor het eerst met hem samen en al snel ontstonden plannen om samen een album te gaan maken. Ondanks de coronamaatregelen lukte het in 2020, alweer meer dan een jaar geleden, om Gary voor het So What’s Next Festival naar Nederland te halen. De organisatie van So What’s Next was op de hoogte van onze plannen en we kregen de gelegenheid om samen tijdens het festival van 2020 op te treden. Bovendien boden ze ons de prachtige grote zaal van Het Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven aan om opnames te maken. Producer Rob Driessen, Gary en ik hebben toen één dag in Eindhoven en een week in de studio van De Muziekgieterij in Maastricht opnames gemaakt. Daar is DOUBLE DARE uitgekomen.

Het resultaat:
DOUBLE DARE. Een dubbel EP, een tweeluik.

Double Dare Vol.1
- Dit EP is een akoestisch-, Live-album.
6 nummers uit de Amerikaanse en Engelse folk en blues traditie.
Deze nummers zijn al gereleased op alle platforms door het label ZENNEZ Records.

Double Dare Vol.2
- Dit EP is een elektrisch-, studio-album.
6 nummers waar moeilijk een stijl aan te verbinden is. Er staat onder andere een onafgemaakt lied van Jeff Buckley op, dat we hebben mogen voltooien, eigen werken, psychedelische Blues/Folk/Jazz en een lied van Schubert. Dit EP zal 4 februari op alle digitale platformen verkrijgbaar zijn.

Who am I?
My name is Peter Willems (22). I’m a singer and double bass player and currently study both subjects at the jazz department of the conservatory of Maastricht. In 2019 I won the 2nd prize at the prestigious ‘Prinses Christina Jazz Concours’. The jury had this to say: “Star potential; that is the word that lingers after the dust has settled after his performance”. Since then I’ve made multiple study trips to New York, and I’ve played on a bunch of cool places including The North Sea jazz festival, Music meeting and So What’s Next.

DOUBLE DARE & Gary Lucas
The Album DOULBE DARE has really turned into something special. A short summary of how this duo project came to be:

After the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours, radiomaker Co de Kloet initiated the meeting between me and the American guitar virtuoso Gary Lucas (69). A world-famous guitar player known from his work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart, who already has 35 albums on his name and who performs worldwide. I played with him for the first time in New York, after which recording plans quickly developed. Despite the corona measures we succes to bring Gary for the So What’s next festival to Netherlands, now already more than a year ago. The organisation of So What’s Next was aware of our recording plans and offered to let us play together on the festival. On top of that they offer their beautiful concert hall of ‘Het Muziekgebouw’ in Eindhoven to record our album. Producer Rob Driessen, Gary and I, worked for one day in Eindhoven and for a full week in the ‘De muziekgieterij’ studio. Out of these recording sessions grew DOUBLE DARE.

The result:
DOUBLE DARE. A double EP, a Dyptich.

Double Dare Vol.1
- This EP is an acoustic-, live-album
6 songs out of the American and English Folk blues tradition. These songs are all released on all platforms by our label ‘ZENNEZ RECORDS’

Double Dare Vol.2
- This EP is an electric-, studio-album.
6 songs that are hard to put into a box. Amongst other things there is a unfinished song by Jeff Buckley, some own songs, psychedelic Blues/Folk/Jazz and a song by Schubert. This EP will release on the 4th of February on all digital Platforms.
