The gap in equality between male and female composers is extreme, it's heartbreaking. Female composers deserve equal opportunities and a chance to shine. So, we need everyone's help, including YOURS, to support us making this our new reality.

According to the study done by “DONNE: women in music” in 15 international orchestras, more than 4000 pieces were performed in the season of 2019-2020. Out of those, only 142 pieces were composed by female composers. We believe that this gap between female and male genders needs to be reduced in order to create equality within the classical composition world.

About the ensemble:

Lilith Ensemble wants to change this! Our ensemble is comprised of professional musicians from around the world. We pride ourselves on having 50/50 gender representation within the ensemble itself. We are not a fixed ensemble: we make sure that composers are free to compose for any instrumentation to give them maximal freedom. We are a platform of musicians wherein the composers will be able to find the resources to be as creative as they want. We are thriving to be a catalyst to ensure more representation of female classical and contemporary composers of music. We want to empower and inspire these composers and give a voice to new generations of composers and creatives as well.

About the project:

Unfortunately, COVID hit us and we could not get started on our first idea, which was organizing concerts. (Concerts in which we would bring the composers we selected with us, so the public could get to know them and in that way get to know their work in more depth.)
But we decided to keep on working on our goal through the creation of an innovative CD. In this CD you will be able to hear 10 world premieres from 10 international composers.

Partnerships:

In the process of this creation we have been in contact with great people with whom we are working with, such as Karin Leutscher. A graphic designer, who is also a musician, who will design our CD cover. Our idea from the CD cover came from our logo. It is based on a water lily, which is a flower that can bloom in dark waters, which is what we want female composers to do. So, we asked our composers to send us a flower with which they feel identified with, and which will be their representative in the CD.

We have also been in contact with Mary Ann Sieghart, the writer of "The Gap Authority". "The Authority Gap" provides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. Marshalling a wealth of data with precision and insight, and including interviews with pioneering women such as Baroness Hale, Mary Beard and Bernadine Evaristo, this is a fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all. She has helped us in this campaign by donating 5 signed books which you can find in one of our tiers.

Our studio (Arco Music) is also an important part of our project, since it is not just a studio we knew, but one that is also in accordance with our views. They have previously worked with one of our partners, Virago VZW, in the recording of the first all female orchestra Virago Symphonic Orchestra.

The cost of creating this CD:

But creating this CD comes with a price tag. create this CD we are looking at a cost of 16.000€ to cover the expenses of:

• 10 amazing composers from all over the world who composed 10 world premieres for this unique CD.

For this CD, all of our musicians will be working for free, as they all believe strongly in the importance of this project.
