Torch Song is een film over een voormalig popzangeres die in Nederland haar muzikale inspiratie terugvindt. De film verhaalt over het verlangen om gezien te worden, en gebruikt muziek als narratief middel.

Het verhaal
Torch Song volgt het onvoorspelbare leven van Liz; een voormalig popster uit de Verenigde Staten die de schijnwerpers tegenwoordig zoveel mogelijk mijdt. Na de plotselinge dood van haar moeder besluit ze naar Nederland te reizen om haar vervreemde halfbroer Gabe op te zoeken. Met haar kinderlijke naïviteit en grillige persoonlijkheid brengt Liz al snel oud zeer naar boven bij Gabe, die eveneens met een artiestencomplex worstelt. Tot overmaat van ramp vindt Liz een muze in Gabe’s vriendin, Joey. Dat brengt de verstandhouding met haar broer verder in het nauw.

Torch Song wordt Jeroen Houben’s eerste Engelstalige speelfilm. De film komt voort uit Jeroen’s fascinatie over de rol die we als mensen in elkaars leven vervullen. Torch Song biedt Jeroen de kans om al zijn talenten tot uiting te brengen; naast scenario en regie zal hij ook de muziek van Torch Song componeren. Hij schrijft de muzieknummers die Liz in de film ten gehore brengt, evenals de filmmuziek.

Jeroen wordt omringd door een enthousiaste en talentvolle crew waarmee hij al jaren samenwerkt. Stuk voor stuk filmprofessionals die klaar staan om aan de slag te gaan met de film. Torch Song wordt ondersteund door het Nederlands Filmfonds en Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst en wordt geproduceerd door Family Affair Films.

Torch Song is een muziekfilm waarin veel live muziek wordt vertolkt. We zijn nog op zoek naar een deel van het budget dat we willen inzetten voor de muziekopnames in de film. Hiervoor kunnen we jouw hulp ontzettend goed gebruiken. Het zou heel fijn zijn als je ons zou willen ondersteunen, zodat de muziek in de film helemaal tot zijn recht zal komen!

The story
Torch Song follows the unpredictable journey of Liz, an eccentric former pop singer who abandoned the spotlight years ago. Already adrift in her life, the loss of her mother prompts a trip to Amsterdam to look up her estranged half-brother Gabe. With a childlike disregard and flair for disruption, Liz soon revamps long-simmering tensions with Gabe. To make matters worse, Gabe’s girlfriend Joey becomes a fixture in Liz’s life, further complicating an already deteriorating family dynamic.

About the maker
Torch Song will be Jeroen Houben's first English-language feature film. The film stems from Jeroen's fascination with the role that people play in each others’ lives. Torch Song offers Jeroen the opportunity to express several of his talents; in addition to screenwriter and director, he will also act as the film’s composer. He writes the music tracks that Liz performs in the film, as well as the film score.

Torch Song is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund and Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and is produced by Family Affair Films.

What we are looking for
Torch Song is a musical film, featuring live performances of the film’s music. We are still looking for a part of the budget that we want to use specifically for the film’s music recordings.
