Under the skin is a dance production that puts four women on stage to express introspections about the Corona pandemic, premiering at CCAmstel on September 23rd. To make this happen, we need your help!
I, Anastasia Kostner am the choreographer of the piece and was asked to develop this work in collaboration with the Italian dance-theatre company Fucinadanza. The dancers Sandra Kramerova, Sanne Clifford and Francesca Ziviani will share the stage with me. More information about me and the dancers can be found below.
What is the performance about?
The goals of making this performance is to collect the experiences of four female dance artists and craft a dance performance that showcases different perspectives during the Corona pandemic. Referring to social, psychological and physical perspectives, this time has imprinted us with foreseeable but also unforeseeable traces. In this project, we want to give a reflective, playful, dramatic and poetic introspection into the world of four women, four female individuals.
The inspiration for the solos is the very ruff movement language of Butoh, which I (Anastasia) have studied from the method developed by the Japanese dance maker Yumiko Yoshioka amongst others. Within the times of the postwar developments in Japan after 1945, Butoh (which actually originated from Germany) was developed there and became popular. Goal of it was to work through the horrors of the second world war and to look at it in its fullness. Butoh subscribes itself to the truthfulness of movement and therefore does not shy away from that which is ‘ugly’, because where something is perceived as ugly, some beauty can be found within. Exactly this paradox fascinates me. I want to apply the Butoh technique when looking at the Corona pandemic into the ‘eye’. To face the difficult and the ugly, I want to give the audience the opportunity to take a moment to acknowledge what is there.
“Life catches up with form”, inspirational quote for the piece by Ohno Kazuo, Butoh dancer.
When and where?
The performance will premiere at the CCAmstel Theater in Amsterdam on the 23rd of September at 20:30.

We need your help!
This production is in collaboration with the Italian company Fucinadanza / Tanzschmiede and we have received funding from AFK. But we need more help to showcase the work in the Netherlands!
For making the touring in the Netherlands possible you will help us:
- renting the space (so that we can focus on the quality of the work and can rehearse within the Netherlands tour)
- paying for the performance venue (to perform at Belcampo in Amsterdam on the 3rd of October we are renting the space as well as the house technician)
- light technician (so that we can pay our light designer Petyr Veenstra each time we perform, the amount that he deserves for the work!)
- paying our dancers the performance fee
- production costs (all those helpers that sit in front of the computer for hours just typing important e-mails or just this!), we depend and hope for your contribution to our campaign.
Any amount counts and we are greatly thankful for your support!

A word from the dance maker
Hello there, my name is Anastasia Kostner, I am originally Italian and cruised Europe to find education about dance and movement, completing my studies in Linz, London and Frankfurt. Currently I am based in Amsterdam, where I work for the Italian dance company Fucinadanza / Tanzschmiede, next to working as a commissioned choreographer for the Dutch visual artist Irma de Vries and the puppet-theatre company Between Two Hands, amongst others. The idea for this piece came from my need to give female dance artists a voice and the chance to express their experiences throughout the Corona pandemic. Not only will the solos be intense, reflective and retrospective, they also want to look at a crisis as a beginning, a chance to experience unknown and creativity, to give a chance for enrichment.
