Een poëtische documentaire over de spirituele zoektocht van Niels en Josefin naar hun lotsbestemming. Om dit verhaal tot realiteit te laten komen hebben we jullie hulp nodig!

Tijdens een contemplatieve wandeling door het bos landt er een witte vlinder op je schouder. De vlinder, die symbool staat voor troost en herdenking, doet denken aan een overleden dierbare. Hij helpt je met de eerste stap naar het verwerkingsproces. Is dit toeval? Of is het een teken?

In deze film kijken we naar hoe je toeval naar je eigen hand kan zetten door middel van spiritualiteit.

Introductie
In de film Eiland op de Maan onderzoeken wij de waarde van spiritualiteit in iemands leven. Spiritualiteit kan zorgen voor het kijken naar de magische laag van de realiteit, een magie die we door de opkomst van de alles verklarende wetenschap langzaam aan het verliezen zijn.

Wij zijn Sascha en Gus, twee jonge filmmakers van de Hogeschool van de Kunsten Utrecht die voor Teledoc Campus een korte documentaire maken. In deze film volgen we de zoektocht naar zingeving; een universele worsteling waar ook wij als makers tegenaan lopen. Zo krijgen we vaak te maken met de hoge lat die te maken heeft met onrealistische maatschappelijke verwachtingen en alsmaar hoger wordt. Een lat die in deze chaotische prestatiegerichte maatschappij onmogelijk bereikt kan worden.

Met deze documentaire willen we laten zien dat het ook op een andere manier kan.

Het verhaal
In de film volgen we een Berlijns koppel, Niels en Josefin, die een omslag wil maken in hun leven van het chaotische modellenbestaan naar het leven van een kunstenaar. Ze maken gebruik van spiritualiteit om de rust in zichzelf te vinden, waardoor er enerzijds ruimte ontstaat voor dromen maar anderzijds ook meer onzekerheden en gevoelens loskomen. Lange tijd werden ze door de maatschappij enkel gemeten op hun uiterlijk, echter moeten ze nu de waarde van hun intrinsieke talenten gaan bewijzen. De documentaire volgt deze zoektocht naar eigen identiteit en laat zien hoe het koppel elkaar hierin ondersteunt en aansterkt.

We willen dit verhaal vertellen door zo min mogelijk gebruik te maken van tekstuele uitleg. We gaan kijken in hoeverre we de grenzen van de documentaire kunnen uitrekken door het toevoegen van fictieve elementen.

Het doel
We willen graag met deze film de kijker een visie bieden over de universele zoektocht naar zingeving. We willen laten zien wat het positieve effect kan zijn van spiritualiteit, om tegelijkertijd een beeld te schetsen van de onttovering van de westerse wereld door de groei van de wetenschap. De documentaire laat de onderwerpen zingeving, identiteit, spiritualiteit, liefde en lotsbestemming samen komen in een poëtische ervaring die gevoelsmatig verteld wordt. Dit willen we bereiken door middel van 3d animaties, colorgrading en een goed sound design.

Island on the Moon

A poetic documentary about the spiritual journey of Niels and Josefin to their destiny. We need your help to make this story come true!

During a contemplative walk through the forest, a white butterfly lands on your shoulder. The butterfly, which symbolizes comfort and commemoration, ireminiscent of a deceased loved one. He will help you take the first step in processing. Is this a coincidence? Or is it a sign?

In this film, we take a look at how you can control coincidence through spirituality.

Introduction
In the film Island on the Moon we search for the value of spirituality in a person's life, how it can allow you to look at the magical layer of reality. The magic that we are slowly losing due to the rise of all-explanatory science.

We are Sascha and Gus, two young filmmakers from the University of Arts Utrecht that are making a short documentary for Teledoc Campus. In this film we follow the search for meaning, an universal struggle that we as creators also encounter. For example, we often have to deal with the high standards that continue to grow, which has to do with unrealistic social expectations. The standards that are impossible to reach in this chaotic performance-oriented society.

We want to tell this story by using as little textual explanation as possible. We will examine to what extent we can stretch the boundaries of documentary film by adding fictional elements that are based on true events.

The story
The film is about a couple in Berlin, Niels and Josefin, that wants to make a change in their lives, from the chaotic modelling existence to the life of an artist. They use spirituality to find peace within themselves, which on the one hand creates space for dreams, but also releases more insecurities and feelings. For a long time they were only measured by society on their appearance, but now they have to prove the value of their inner side. The documentary shows the struggle against their image and how they support and strengthen each other in this journey.

We want to tell this story by using as little textual explanation as possible. We will explore to what extent we can stretch the boundaries of the documentary by adding fictional elements.

The goal
In this film we would like to offer the viewer a different way of thinking about the universal search for meaning. We want to show what the positive effect of spirituality can be, while at the same time sketching a picture of the disenchantment of the Western world by the growth of science. The documentary brings the subjects of meaning, identity, spirituality, love and destiny together in a poetic experience that is instinctively told. We want to achieve this through 3d animations, color grading and good sound design.
