Het project

'Spiegl' is een opera in documentaire stijl over het verhaal van Yitschak Spiegl, die als Joodse twintiger in 1988 wegvluchtte uit Tsjecho-Slowakije en in Oostenrijk als vluchteling verbleef. De film of het videowerk kan gezien worden als een eigenzinnige documentaire, waarin allerlei vormen en vertelstructuren samenkomen, met opera als rode draad. Tijdens het project zoeken Yitschak en ikzelf, de filmmaker, naar de vage grens tussen herinneringen en fictie.

Documentaire

Het videowerk is een collage van drie verschillende vertelstructuren; ten eerste de documentaire component met beelden van Yitschak en mij in Oostenrijk, gefilmd tijdens onze terugreis in januari 2020 naar de vluchtelingenkampen en -pensions waar hij als oostblokvluchteling verbleef, vlak voor de val van het ijzeren gordijn. Yitschak had destijds nog de uiterlijke lichamelijke kenmerken van een vrouw, maar inmiddels niet meer.

Opera

De tweede en muzikale component is de ‘opera’, als gefictionaliseerde versie van Yitschak’s verhaal, vertolkt door jonge musici. De opera is gefilmd met een kleine muzikale bezetting in een studio. De setting is intiem, en de beelden van de musici zijn close-up gefilmd. De muziek benadrukt de innerlijke emoties en kwetsbaarheden van het verhaal.

Reanactments

Ten derde is er de theatrale component: een serie scènes met Yitschak en mij, opgenomen in de studio. Via deze reanactments, waarin Yitschak en ik elkaar uitdagen om door te dringen tot uithoeken van herinneringen, ontstaat een onzeker balanceren tussen het blootgeven van een intimiteit en het spelen van een spel. De herinneringen betreffen onder andere het afscheid van zijn pleegmoeder in Tsjecho-Slowakije, een onterechte arrestatie in een vluchtelingenkamp en zijn eerste grote verliefdheid.

Over mij

Ik werk als beeldend kunstenaar, filmmaker, muzikant en performer. Wonende in Amsterdam, werk ik momenteel als artist in residence aan De Ateliers. Van 2014 tot 2018 studeerde ik Film aan de School of Arts (KASK) in Gent en volgde ook enkele vakken aan het conservatorium en de drama-afdeling. Parallel volgde ik lessen bij verschillende professionele musici gespecialiseerd in o.a. Balkanmuziek, wat mij de mogelijkheid gaf om me breed te ontwikkelen en mijn interesse deed groeien om mijn camera in te zetten voor het creëren van een filmische ruimte, waarin ik de verschillende disciplines waar ik graag mee werk kon combineren.

Ik beschouw de performatieve ruimte die ontstaat bij de aanwezigheid van een camera als een instrument om vriendschappen aan te gaan en op een intieme manier te communiceren met de mensen die ik film, door het maakproces onderdeel te laten zijn van het werk. In veel gevallen speelt muziek hierbij een grote rol.

Motivatie

Het werk als collage van deze drie componenten vormt een reflectie op zowel Yitschaks persoonlijke verhaal in relatie tot mijn eigen positie van een jonge vrouwelijke filmmaker, als op grote historische verschuivingen, tegenstrijdigheden en spanningen in een snel veranderend Europa.

Het reconstrueren van een waargebeurde geschiedenis biedt bovendien nog een andere reflectieruimte; het schept een afstand tot wat we ervaren en hoe we erover spreken. Opera is een genre dat bij uitstek de emotionele uiting van traumatische of tragische gebeurtenissen en de hieruit voortvloeiende catharsisgebruikt als basis. Maar wat betekent dat als degene die de catharsis oproept dezelfde persoon is als degene die het ondergaat? En in hoeverre kun je een persoonlijke geschiedenis dramatiseren?

Met name de grens waar deze fictieve ruimte en de realiteit elkaar raken, interesseert mij wanneer ik mensen zich via een rol laat verhouden tot hun eigen realiteit. De ambiguïteit van dit snijvlak: daar waar werkelijkheid en verhaal door elkaar lopen en niet even goed te onderscheiden zijn, brengt onverbloemd kwetsbaarheden aan de oppervlakte. Een documentair-historische vertelstructuur kan hier mengen met een speelsere vormelijke aanpak, waar emotie, sfeer, en absurditeit centraal kunnen staan. Dit vertelt in mijn optiek zonder woorden soms veel meer dan bijvoorbeeld een interview en het brengt ons dichter bij een emotionele verbintenis met een persoonlijke, maar ook een collectieve geschiedenis: dat van een Europa dat onderhevig is aan allerlei trekkrachten en waar een individu door de mazen van
 het net glipt.

[ENG] The project

'Spiegl' is a video work about the story of Yitschak Spiegl, a Jewish man who fled Czechoslovakia in 1988 in his early twenties and stayed in Austria as a refugee.

The video work or film can be seen as an unusual documentary, combining many different narrative forms, with opera as a main theme and is a collage of three different elements.

Documentary

Firstly, the documentary images of Yitschak and me in Austria. This was filmed during our return journey in January 2020 to the refugee camps and guesthouses where he stayed as an Eastern Bloc refugee, just before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Yitschak was assigned female at birth and was living as a woman at the time, however this has since changed.

Reanactments

Secondly, there are a series of conversations between Yitschak and me, recorded in the studio. In these we explore how to depict and dramatize a personal story as a historical event through film and which forms of reconstruction are possible. Examples are the moment of departure from his foster mother, a false accusation in one of the refugee pensions, and the first time Yitschak fell in love.

Opera

The third element is the "opera", as a separate fictionalized version of his story, performed by musicians. The opera is not performed live, but filmed in the same studio where Yitschak and I talk about its form and content. The opera part carries the narrative tension through music and creates the skeleton of the film as a whole.

Motivation

The work as a collage of these three elements is a reflection on both Yitschak's personal story in relation to my own position as a young female filmmaker, as well as major historical shifts, contradictions and tensions in a rapidly changing Europe.

Reconstructing a true history also offers another space for reflection; it creates a distance from what we experience and how we speak about it. Opera is a genre that primarily uses the emotional expression of traumatic or tragic events and the resulting catharsis as a basis. But what does that mean if the one who is invoking the catharsis is the same person as the one who is undergoing it? And to what extent can you dramatize a personal history?

I am particularly interested in the boundary where this fictional space and realism meet when I create a space for people to relate to their own reality through a role. The ambiguity of this intersection: where reality and story intertwine and cannot be distinguished one another, unvarnished vulnerabilities will be brought to the surface. A documentary-historical narrative structure can mix here with a more playful and formal approach, where emotion, atmosphere and absurdity can be central. In my view, this sometimes tells much more without words than, for example, an interview.

About me

About me – I’m working as an artist, film maker, performer and musician, currently living in Amsterdam and working as an artist in residence at De Ateliers. From 2014 until 2018 I studied Film at the School of Arts (KASK) in Ghent and followed a few courses at the conservatory and drama department. Parrallel to that I attended many classes from professional musicians specialised in Balkan music, which allowed me to develop a wide range of skills and made me feel more and more attracted to use my camera to create a cinematic space where I could combine the different mediums that I like to work with.
