Mijn naam is David Kerssens, 25 jaar, en ik studeer dit jaar af aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

Mijn afstudeerproject behelst de bouw van een machine als onderdeel van een installatie. De machine laat van grote hoogte helikopterzaden vallen en is in staat deze doormiddel van een zelf ontworpen luchtsysteem weer naar boven te transporteren waardoor er als het ware voor eeuwig helikopterzaden naar beneden blijven dwarrelen. De machine zal in zijn geheel gemaakt worden van staal. Zijn uitstraling zal professioneel en strak zijn, zijn functie speels en mysterieus. De ruimte waar de installatie zich bevindt stel ik mij donker voor met in het midden de subtiel belichte machine. Ook zullen er houten halfronde zitbanken staan waarop de toeschouwer plaats kan nemen. Hoe de ruimte er precies uit zal gaan zien laat zich in het proces van de komende maanden nog uitwijzen. Het luchtsysteem van de machine zal aangedreven worden door een zware industriële stofzuiger. De stofzuiger zal in een geluidsdichte kist geplaatst worden waardoor de hoeveelheid geluid beperkt zal blijven.

Het werk gaat over verwondering, schoonheid en ontzag en tracht de filosofische implicaties van dergelijke ervaringen te belichten en te onderzoeken. Ook stel ik indirect vragen over de plek van technologie in de natuur. Technologie en natuur zijn in mijn optiek geen evidente tegengestelden van elkaar. In mijn installatie is de machine dan ook zeker geen tegengestelde aan de helikopterzaden en daarmee de natuur. De machine en de zaden drukken eerder een soort symbiose uit. Hoewel de symbiose aanwezig is ligt de focus van het werk op het vallen van de helikopterzaden en de schoonheid en onbevattelijkheid daar van.

Dit werk dient als een serieuze en concrete stap in het ontwikkelen van mijn eigen handschrift. Dat proces loopt al langer, dit is namelijk niet de eerste machine die ik gemaakt heb. Met een achtergrond in de fotografie wilde ik een nieuwe manier ontwikkelen om geobserveerde fenomenen vast te leggen en die te delen met de wereld. Eerder maakte ik een machine die een wolk fruitvliegen door een ruimte kon doen bewegen. De machine had een lange horizontale arm waarvan het uiteinde uitgerust was met een substantie wat de vliegen naar zich toe lokte. Eens in de zo veel tijd bewoog de arm van punt a naar punt b en de wolk volgde. De wolk vliegen werd uit zijn natuurlijke context gehaald en werd in de ruimte een symbolische entiteit. Zo ontstond er dus ruimte voor contemplatie. Met het idee van verwondering in het achterhoofd geloof ik dat deze strategie de gelaagdheid en rijkheid van bepaalde fenomenen beter weet over te brengen dan een foto of een film.

Om dit project tot stand te kunnen brengen ben ik op zoek naar sponsors! Volgens mijn begroting liggen de totale kosten van dit project op ongeveer 6000 euro. Het project is al een stukje onderweg en mijn tekort is nog ongeveer 2300 euro. Met de 1500 euro die ik via dit platform hoop te verwerven ben ik van plan het staal, de stofzuiger, de geluidsdichte kist en een deel van het hout voor de halfronde zitbanken te bekostigen.

Het werk is uiteindelijk te zien op de afstudeershow van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en voor iedereen vrij toegankelijk. Vanwege de huidige crisis is de exacte datum van opening nog niet vastgesteld. De verwachting is dat dit in juli 2021 zal zijn. Sponsoren ontvangen een uitnodiging via mail en/of post bij vermelding van contactgegevens. My graduation project involves the construction of a machine as part of an installation. The machine drops helicopter seeds from a great height and is able to transport them back upwards by means of a self-designed air system, so that helicopter seeds keep whirling down forever, as it were. The machine will be made entirely of steel. Its appearance will be professional and sleek, its function playful and mysterious. I imagine the room where the installation is located dark with the subtly illuminated machine in the middle. There will also be wooden semicircular benches on which the spectator can take a seat. Exactly what the space will look like will be revealed in the process of the coming months. The machine's air system will be powered by a heavy duty industrial vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner will be placed in a soundproof box so that the amount of noise will be limited.

The work is about wonder, beauty and awe and seeks to illuminate and explore the philosophical implications of such experiences. I also indirectly ask questions about the place of technology in nature. In my view, technology and nature are not obvious opposites. In my installation, the machine is certainly not the opposite of the helicopter seeds and therefore nature. The machine and the seeds rather express a kind of symbiosis. Although the symbiosis is present, the focus of the work is on the falling of the helicopter seeds and the beauty and incomprehensibility of it.

This work serves as a serious and concrete step in developing my own handwriting. That process has been running for some time, because this is not the first machine I made. With a background in photography, I wanted to develop a new way to capture observed phenomena and share them with the world. Earlier I made a machine that could move a cloud of fruit flies through a space. The machine had a long horizontal arm, the end of which was equipped with a substance that attracted the flies to it. Once in a while the arm moved from point a to point b and the cloud followed. The cloud of flies was taken out of its natural context and became a symbolic entity in the space. Thus, space was created for contemplation. With the idea of ​​wonder in mind, I believe that this strategy conveys the stratification and richness of certain phenomena better than a photo or a film.

I am looking for sponsors to realize this project! According to my budget, the total cost of this project is about 6000 euros. The project is already underway and my shortage is still about 2300 euros. With the 1500 euros that I hope to acquire through this platform, I intend to pay for the steel, the vacuum cleaner, the soundproof box and some of the wood for the semicircular benches.

The work can eventually be seen at the graduation show of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and is freely accessible to everyone.
