Who is the Pleasure Society?

Sexuality is something that unites us as humans like nothing else in the world. However, this piece still seems like a topic that we generally avoid. It makes us uncomfortable (THAT’S OK). There is a lot of shame surrounding it (THAT’S NOT NECESSARY) and a lot remains undiscussed (WE CAN CHANGE THAT).

The Pleasure Society (check our Instagram here) is a place where it is normal to talk and read about sexuality. A place where you can explore the diversity that sexuality and pleasure can mean through different forms of creative expression, be it in a card game or an audio experience. In everything we do, we ask ourselves the following question:

“How can we break the taboo on sexuality while being respectful of people’s freedom?”

Who are we?

The Pleasure Society is run by Shari Klein and Isabelle Juursema. Shari founded the Pleasure Society in January 2021 and Isabelle joined the team from the very start. Shari runs the platform in creating new concepts, collaborations and anything of the like. Isabelle does all art direction and graphic design.

Our vision

Sexual pleasure in all its forms should be treated and seen as an essential part of our overall wellness. The Pleasure Society believes that art and creativity can directly contribute to this.

Pleasure Cards

In 2021 we produced our first product: The Pleasure Cards. A card game to deepen your sexuality. We made this game because we believe that asking the right questions helps us become more wholesome and connected humans. It can help us explore what sexuality means to us, to others around us and from there create a deeper and more profound connection to this part of ourselves. But we want to expand to a big family of different sets of cards! That’s why we’re creating two exclusive expansion packs in collaboration with two artists.

Why these expansion packs?

- We want to zoom in on specific themes around sexuality
- We believe that art and creativity can open up the conversation around sexuality. By involving three artists we give them a voice to express their perspective on exploring this topic.
- We want to deepen the conversation around sexuality, pleasure and intimacy in a fun, playful and easygoing way
- We believe that art inspires and helps people express themselves sexually
- You’ll get a unique perspective from each artist and their view on the subject
- It’s the first step in expanding the Pleasure Cards family
- You’ll be able to add to your collection of Pleasure Cards. No need to have the original cards in order to play these expansion decks though, but we would recommend.

What are they?

- We’ll be making a 2 pack of Pleasure Cards, so two separate decks of cards that are an expansion to the original Pleasure Cards game
- Each pack will have a different theme and design, each made and thought of by a very cool artist (if we say so ourselves)
- Each style of art will show variety of creativity and perspective on the theme of sexuality

How can we make it happen?

We need your help! In order to make this project succeed, we need the financial means to do so.

We want to pay all artists fairly, create beautiful and high quality decks of cards and be able to pay ourselves a little bit for the time we put into this project. We’ll use the funding for the following:
- It will pay the artists for the unique designs they make
- It will go towards production costs of the cards, packaging and the unique artworks we are going to create in collaboration with the artists
- It will be used for shipping costs we make
- It will pay for the hours the Pleasure Society puts into the project
- We’ll be involving a small group of people to help us think about the questions in each pack; your support will also help fund the time they put into thinking along with us.

Which artists are we involving?

Sioejeng Tsao - @seeyousioe

Sioejeng Tsao (she/her), also known as SEEYOUSIOE, is an artist of Chinese descent who was born and is now based in Amsterdam. She is not afraid to seek discomfort and does not shy away from confrontation. Her work, consisting of paintings and digital illustrations, is a colourful exploration of different social aspects like feminism, sustainability, racial justice and her own queer bi-cultural identity. She therefore describes her work as a voice for the marginalised groups in society and gets inspiration from the different worlds around her.

“Sexuality for me means being free of the shame and guilt that society, colonization and religion has put on feminine presenting bodies. It means that I'm breaking out of the mold of what is expected from a male gaze perspective. Reclaiming my sensuality as a part of my multidimensional self as a queer bi-cultural woman of color.”

Lonneke van der Palen @lonnekevanderpalen

Lonneke van der Palen (she/her) wants to amaze the viewer. She looks at everything with the same interest. But instead of simply registering what she sees, she reduces the image to its essence. She does this by enlarging everyday impressions and placing them in a new and alienating light. In this way she manages to captivate the mundane, everyday passing of life you would normally overlook.

“For me, sexuality represents a sensation that prompts us to think, dream and act. To feel alive and be whoever we want to be, despite our age, background or gender. It's about celebrating and embracing our purest self and the pleasure of accepting and exposing it. Time to pay tribute to our most beautiful and sweetest energy out there”.

Planning - a rough one

If our crowdfunding succeeds we aim to have the cards ready at the start of September, 2022. We'll most likely combine this with a hawt and steamy kick off party with all people who helped fund the campaign and the artists. Exact dates will be shared once the campaign has met its goal!

Donation towards Sehaq - queer refugee group

If our campaign succeeds we want to donate 10% of the proceedings of our crowdfunding to queer refugee collective Sehaq. With our donation we want to contribute to the great work they do to create safe spaces for queer refugees from the Middle East and North Africa in the Netherlands.

Wie is de Pleasure Society?

Niks verenigt ons meer in de wereld dan onze seksualiteit. Dit deel van onszelf lijkt echter nog steeds iets dat we over het algemeen vermijden. Het maakt ons ongemakkelijk (DAT IS OK). Er zit veel schaamte omheen (DAT IS NIET NODIG) en er veel blijft onbesproken (DAT IS TE VERANDEREN).

De Pleasure Society (check onze Instagram hier) is een plek waar het normaal is om over seksualiteit te praten en te lezen. Een plek waar je de diversiteit kunt ontdekken die seksualiteit en genot kunnen betekenen door middel van verschillende vormen van creativiteit. Bij alles wat we doen stellen we onszelf de volgende vraag:

“Hoe kunnen we het taboe op seksualiteit doorbreken en tegelijkertijd de vrijheid van mensen respecteren?”

Onze visie

Seksueel genot in al haar vormen moet worden gezien worden als een essentieel onderdeel van ons algehele welzijn. De Pleasure Society gelooft dat kunst en creativiteit hier direct aan kunnen bijdragen.

Pleasure Cards

In 2021 hebben ons eerste product gelanceerd: de Pleasure Cards. Een kaartspel om je seksualiteit mee te verdiepen.

We hebben dit spel gemaakt, omdat we geloven dat het stellen van de juiste vragen ons helpt om gezondere en meer verbonden mensen te worden. Het kan ons helpen te onderzoeken wat seksualiteit voor ons betekent, voor anderen om ons heen en van daaruit een diepe en oprechte verbinding met dit deel van onszelf te creëren.

We onze eerste set kaarten uitbreiden naar een grote familie van verschillende sets kaarten! Daarom maken we in samenwerking met twee kunstenaars twee exclusieve uitbreidings-sets.

Wie zijn we?

The Pleasure Society wordt gerund door Shari Klein en Isabelle Juursema. Shari richtte de Pleasure Society op in januari 2021 en Isabelle kwam vanaf het begin bij het team. Shari runt het platform door constant nieuwe concepten te ontwikkelen en samenwerkingen en te zetten. Isabelle doet alle art direction en grafisch ontwerp.

Waarom deze uitbreidings-sets?

- We willen inzoomen op specifieke thema's rond seksualiteit
- Wij geloven dat kunst en creativiteit het gesprek rond seksualiteit kan openen. Door twee kunstenaars te betrekken, geven we ze een stem om hun visie op het verkennen van dit onderwerp te uiten.
- We willen het gesprek rond seksualiteit, genot en intimiteit verdiepen op een leuke, speelse en makkelijke manier
- Wij geloven dat kunst mensen inspireert en helpt om zich seksueel uit te drukken
- Je krijgt een uniek perspectief van elke kunstenaar en hun kijk op het onderwerp
- Het is de eerste stap in het uitbreiden van de Pleasure Cards-familie
- Je kunt jouw verzameling Pleasure Cards uitbreiden. Het is niet nodig om de originele kaarten te hebben om deze uitbreidingsdecks te spelen, maar we raden het wel aan.

Hoe ziet de uitbreiding eruit?

- We gaan een 2-pack Pleasure Cards maken, dus twee aparte kaartspellen die een uitbreiding zijn op het originele Pleasure Cards-spel.
- Elk pakket heeft een ander thema en ontwerp, elk gemaakt en bedacht door een hele toffe kunstenaar (al zeggen we het zelf)
- Elke kunststijl zal een verscheidenheid aan creativiteit en perspectief op het thema seksualiteit laten zien

Hoe kunnen we het project realiseren?

We hebben je hulp nodig! Om dit project te laten slagen hebben we de financiële middelen nodig. We willen alle artiesten eerlijk betalen, mooie kaartspellen van hoge kwaliteit maken en onszelf een klein beetje kunnen betalen voor de tijd die we in dit project steken.

We gebruiken het geld voor het volgende:
- Het zal de kunstenaars betalen voor de unieke ontwerpen die ze maken
- Het gaat naar de productiekosten van de kaarten, verpakkingen en de unieke kunstwerken die we gaan maken in samenwerking met de kunstenaars
- Het wordt gebruikt voor de verzendkosten van alle kaarten
- Het betaalt de uren van de Pleasure Society
- We betrekken een kleine groep mensen om ons te helpen nadenken over de vragen in elk pakket; jouw donatie helpt ook bij het financieren van de tijd die zij steken in het meedenken aan de vragen.

Welke kunstenaars betrekken we?

Sioejeng Tsao - @seeyousioe

Sioejeng Tsao (zij/haar), ook bekend als SEEYOUSIOE, is een kunstenaar van Chinese afkomst, geboren en nu gevestigd in Amsterdam. Ze is niet bang om ongemak te zoeken en gaat de confrontatie niet uit de weg. Haar werk, bestaande uit schilderijen en digitale illustraties, is een kleurrijke verkenning van verschillende sociale aspecten zoals feminisme, duurzaamheid, raciale rechtvaardigheid en haar eigen queer bi-culturele identiteit. Ze omschrijft haar werk dan ook als een stem voor de gemarginaliseerde groepen in de samenleving en haalt inspiratie uit de verschillende werelden om haar heen.

“Seksualiteit betekent voor mij vrij zijn van schaamte en schuldgevoelens die de maatschappij, kolonisatie en religie op vrouwelijke presenterende lichamen hebben gelegd. Het betekent dat ik uit de mal breek van wat verwacht wordt vanuit het perspectief van een mannelijke blik. Mijn sensualiteit terugwinnen als een deel van mijn multidimensionale zelf als een queer bi-culturele vrouw van kleur.”

Lonneke van der Palen @lonnekevanderpalen

Lonneke van der Palen (zij/haar) wil de kijker verbazen. Ze bekijkt alles met dezelfde interesse. Maar in plaats van simpelweg te registreren wat ze ziet, reduceert ze het beeld tot de essentie. Dit doet ze door alledaagse indrukken uit te vergroten en in een nieuw en vervreemdend licht te plaatsen. Zo weet ze het alledaagse, doorsnee leven te vangen dat je normaal gesproken over het hoofd zou zien. Daarnaast, zoekt ze naar hints van sensualiteit in het dagelijks leven.

“Voor mij staat seksualiteit voor een sensatie die ons aanzet tot denken, dromen en handelen. Om ons levend te voelen en te zijn wie we willen zijn, ondanks onze leeftijd, achtergrond of geslacht. Het gaat over het vieren en omarmen van ons puurste zelf en het plezier om het te accepteren en bloot te leggen. Tijd om een hulde te geven aan onze mooiste en liefste energie die er is”.

Planning - indicatie

Als onze crowdfunding slaagt, streven we ernaar om de kaarten begin september 2022 klaar te hebben. We zullen dit hoogstwaarschijnlijk combineren met een spetterend en zweterig kick-off party met alle donateurs en de kunstenaars. Exacte data worden gedeeld zodra we weten of de campagne geslaagd is!

Donation towards Sehaq - queer refugee group

We willen 10% van de opbrengst van onze crowdfunding doneren aan queer vluchtelingencollectief Sehaq. Met onze donatie willen we bijdragen aan het geweldige werk dat zij doen om veilige plekken te creëren voor queer vluchtelingen uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika in Nederland.
