Fatima (13), de jongere zus van Ali schreef een openhartige brief met de wens dat iedereen het verhaal van Ali en haar familie weet. Ali Ghezawi was 14 jaar toen hij zelfmoord pleegde op het AZC in Gilze.

Het verhaal van Ali op zoek naar een plek om zijn leven voort te kunnen zetten is herkenbaar voor meerdere kinderen verblijvend op een AZC. De inhoud van deze brief wordt verwerkt in deze korte film en hiermee krijgen Ali en ook Fatima een stem.

Al-I-Negma House | Ali's sterrenhuis

In gesprek met het gezin Ghezawi besloten een aantal kunstenaars werkzaam voor Stichting de Vrolijkheid. (een netwerkorganisatie van kunstenaars werkzaam AZC's) om samen met hen en de bewoners iets te ontwerpen voor de kinderen. kunstenaar Helen Vergouwen ging met het gezin aan de slag.

Slapen onder de sterren vond Ali ‘het mooiste wat er is’. Het Al-I-Negma huis, betekent Ali’s sterrenhuis en is een zeshoekig kunstwerk waar één persoon tegelijk in kan zitten. Ali, die hartchirurg wilde worden en kinderharten wilde maken, verblijdt hiermee de harten van kinderen en jongeren van het azc Gilze. Een plek voor jezelf waar je even aan de drukte kunt ontsnappen. Waar je ongezien kunt dromen, uitrusten, zingen, tekenen, vrolijk of verdrietig zijn, schrijven, nadenken…..of gewoon door het glazen dak naar de lucht kijken.

In de vorm van workshops van de Vrolijkheid met de kinderen en bewoners zal het Al-I-Negma huis vormgegeven worden en zal het maakproces hiervan onderdeel worden van de film Elegy.

Elegy

Het is belangrijk om Ali's stem te laten horen. Om de kwetsbaarheid te tonen van kinderen die overgeleverd worden aan een systeem en daar geen invloed op uit kunnen oefenen. Ze nemen onbewust de rol van volwassenen op zich. Ze slaan zo de veilige en vruchtbare tijd van simpelweg "kind zijn" over. Elegy biedt op velerlei manier ondersteuning aan deze groep kinderen en jongvolwassenen en kan ze sterken en hun rol in het leven beter op te pakken.

Met de brief van Fatima nemen we je mee op een creatieve reis, die lijkt op die van Ali's familie. Samen zorgen we ervoor, dat alle elementen van de workshops, constructie en filmmaken, samenkomen in één vorm: Een film en een ELEGIE

Initiatiefnemers Alexander Moust & Claudette vd Rakt
Multimedia kunstenaar Claudette kwam als programmamaker van de Vrolijkheid in AZC Gilze en projectleider van kunstkameraden (project waarbij kinderen op het AZC 1 op 1 met een kunstenaar werken aan een kunstwerk) afgelopen zomer in contact met de familie Ghezawi. Ali was een van de kinderen die in aanmerking zou komen om aan dit project mee te gaan doen. Michiel en Claudette zijn inmiddels de kunstkameraden (stichting de Cultuurkantine) geworden van broertje en zusje van Ali; Mohamed en Fatima (zie blog Claudette & Fatima).

Filmmaker Alexander Moust die in zijn films veelal Europese migratieproblematiek aankaart hoorde het bericht over Ali en schreef een mail aan zijn vrienden met de suggestie samen iets voor de familie te ondernemen. Waaronder Claudette; die net de brief van Fatima had ontvangen met haar uitdrukkelijke wens deze wereldkundig te maken. Zo kwam het basisidee voor de film Elegy tot stand

AZC bewoners
Diverse AZC bewoners werken mee aan de film. Het script, camerawerk, geluidsopname, montage, en illustraties die een onderdeel hierin gaan worden vormen een opstap naar autonomie. Het biedt tevens een veilige omgeving om zichzelf in te ontwikkelen

Kortom:
Deze film verbindt en harmoniseert. Om deze professionele filmproductie mogelijk te maken waarbij kosten voortvloeiend uit de overkoepelende samenwerking gedekt kunnen worden, hebben wij uw steun nodig.

Ali Ghezawi was 14 years old when he committed suicide in the asylum seekers centre in Gilze, the Netherlands. Fatima (13), Ali's younger sister wrote a candid letter, wishing that everyone knows the story of Ali and her family.

The story of Ali looking for a safe home is recognizable to many children seeking asylum. The content of this letter is incorporated in this short film and with this Ali and also Fatima get a voice.

Al-I-Negma House | Ali’s Star House

In conversation with the Ghezawi family, a number of artists working for ‘de Vrolijkheid’ (a Dutch network organization of artists working in the asylum seekers centre ) came up with the idea to design something for children together with them and other residents. Artist Helen Vergouwen started to co-create work with the Ghezawi family.

Ali thought ‘sleeping under the stars’ was 'the most beautiful thing on earth'. The Al-I-Negma House, means Ali's star house and is a hexagonal work of art that can sit one person at a time. Ali, who wanted to become a heart surgeon and heal children's hearts, rejoices in the hearts of children and young people.A place to withdraw and escape the hustle. Where you can dream, rest, sing, draw, be cheerful or sad, write, think.

Or just look through the glass roof at the stars in the sky.

In the form of workshops with the children and residents, the Al-I-Negma House will be designed and the creation process will become part of the film Elegy.

Elegy

We feel it's important to make Ali's voice heard. To show the vulnerability of children who are at the mercy of a system they cannot influence. They subconsciously assume the role of adults. They thus skip the safe and carefree time of simply "being a child". Elegy offers support to this group of children and young adults in many ways and can strengthen them to better address their role in life.

With Fatima's letter, we take you on a creative journey similar to that of Ali's family. Together we ensure that all the elements of the workshops, construction and filmmaking, come together in one form: A film and an ELEGY

Multimedia artist Claudette came into contact with the Ghezawi family last summer as program maker and project leader of ‘Art Comrades’
( Kunstkameraden) : projects in which refugee children work one on one with an artist. Ali was one of the children who would be eligible to participate in this project. Michiel and Claudette have become the art comrades of brother and sister of Ali; Mohamed and Fatima (see blog Claudette & Fatima).

Filmmaker Alexander Moust, who often addresses European migration issues in his films, heard the message about Ali and wrote an email to his friends suggesting that they could all do something for the family Ghezawi, together. Including Claudette; who had just received the letter from Fatima with her urgent wish to make its contents worldly.

This is how the basic idea for the film came about.

Several residents of the asylum seeker centre are working on the film. The script, camerawork, sound recording, editing, and illustrations part of ELEGY, form a steppingstone towards their autonomy. It also provides a safe environment to develop themselves in socially.
