Ik ben Ted van der Hulst. Ik ben een fotograaf en ik lanceer deze campagne om geld in te zamelen om de productiekosten van mijn fotoboek ARISTOCRATS te dekken
In 2017 ontmoette ik een groep kleine mensen op Bali (Indonesië). Ze reden in een pick-up truck en waren op weg naar hun werk. Ik was meteen geïntrigeerd door hun uiterlijk. De pick-up truck had wat reclame op de zijkant en er stond "Entertainment Midget Boxing".
Boncel, de manager van de groep, begint het me uit te leggen.
“wij zijn een groep van in totaal 15 mensen die samen werken en wonen op Bali. We vermaken toeristen op Bali met boksen en doen soms feestjes verkleed als clowns. We komen allemaal uit verschillende delen van Indonesië en we worden ons hele leven gepest. Nu hebben we een community opgebouwd om elkaar te steunen en voelen we ons hier veilig en thuis”
Ik ging naar hun show en voor mij was het opmerkelijk om te zien, maar ik wilde meer weten over deze groep karakters. Ik vroeg of ik bij hen thuis mocht komen om te kijken hoe ze samenleven.
Nadat ik ze allemaal in huis had ontmoet, begon ik portretten te maken en stuurde ik ze op bepaalde locaties zoals ik ze wilde portretteren. Ik wilde de kijker laten weten dat we te maken hebben met een aantal sterke karakters en dat hun grootte er niet toe doet.
Als je je hele leven gepest bent vanwege je uiterlijk. Je ontwikkelt een karakter dat veel sterker is dan schoonheid. Je wordt meer dan dat je boven de samenleving staat. Ze zijn zo geboren en vechten hun hele leven tegen de samenleving. Ze hebben zichzelf geaccepteerd zoals ze zijn en wat ze willen en dat is iets moois.

My name is Ted van der Hulst. I'm a photographer and I'm launching a campaign to raise money for the production costs of my photography book ARISTOCRATS.
In 2017, I met a group of little people in Bali (Indonesia). They were in a pick up truck on the way to work. I was right away intrigued by their appearance. The pick up truck had some hanging banner on the side “Entertainment Midget Boxing”.
Boncel the manager of the group started to explain to me.
“We are a group of 15 little people who work and live together in Bali. We entertain tourists with a boxing show and sometimes we do costume party as clowns. We all come from different parts of Indonesia and we've been bullied our whole lives. Now we build a community to support each other where we feel safe and at home”
I went to see their show and it was a remarkable. The show made me want to know more about this group of characters so I decided to talk and ask them if I can come over to their house to see how they live.
I came over and met all of them in the house. I started to take several portraits and directed them. Through these photos, I wanted to show that we are dealing with some strong characters despite their physical size.
If you have been bullied your whole life because of your appearance, you'll develop a character that is much stronger than beauty. You become more than that, you are above society. They were born different and they fight their whole lives against society. They have accepted themselves for who they are and what they want, which is a beautiful thing.
