Wij zijn een gitaarensemble voor studenten, wat uniek is in Nederland. Na veel concerten in eigen land, verschillende tours in het buitenland en in 2017 onze eerste CD “Noches de guitarras”, hebben we vorig jaar ons eerste lustrum gevierd. Dat werd een groot feest met solisten, een koor en veel gitaristen uit het hele land die met ons het fantastische podium van de Stadsschouwburg in Utrecht hebben gedeeld. Op die avond in november, werd voor ons nogmaals duidelijk hoe muziek mensen diep kan raken, verbinden en ontroeren.

Wat we toen nog niet wisten, was dat we slechts een paar maanden later allemaal zouden voelen hoeveel troost en kracht muziek ons kan geven in tijden van angst, isolatie of eenzaamheid. Ondanks dat al onze projecten, plannen en concerten door de coronamaatregelen werden stilgelegd, hebben we vanuit huis hard geoefend, individuele opnames gemaakt en zijn we onafgebroken online bij elkaar gekomen om door te gaan met onze plannen.

Vitamine G voor iedereen!
Een beetje gek om in deze bizarre tijd een muziekproject op te starten… of misschien juist niet?
Tijdens de quarantaineperiode werden we ons nog bewuster van de energie en de verhoogde weerstand die we kunnen halen uit onze compagnon, de gitaar. Vitamine G noemen we dat: het beschermt ons in deze sombere tijden. Omdat we iedereen deze vitamineboost gunnen, hebben we besloten een tweede CD op te nemen om juist dit magische effect van muziek met veel mensen te kunnen delen. Natuurlijk met veel luisteraars, maar ook met veel gastgitaristen, die een paar stukken van de CD met ons gaan opnemen.

Vernieuwend repertoire
Voor deze tweede CD hebben we prachtige muziek uit de 20e en 21e eeuw geselecteerd. Dit ambitieuze repertoire zal ons ensemble een stap verder in onze muzikale ontwikkeling brengen. Naast originele muziek voor gitaar hebben we ook muziek zelf gearrangeerd, zoals Mishima van Philip Glass en werken van Béla Bartók en Luciano Berio. We zijn ook ontzettend trots om twee bijzondere muziekstukken voor het eerst in een professionele opname vast te leggen: het Lorca Concerto van Gerald Garcia en Anachronisme #3 van Aart Strootman. Het eerste stuk, gecomponeerd voor twee gitaarsolisten en gitaarensemble is een eerbetoon aan de Spaanse dichter Federico García Lorca. In mei 2018 hebben we de Nederlandse première in Utrecht en Amsterdam gegeven. Anachronisme #3 is speciaal voor ons gecomponeerd door Aart Strootman; één van de belangrijkste Nederlandse componisten van deze tijd. Uitdagende muziek waaraan we met veel enthousiasme en aandacht voor detail gewerkt hebben. Naast o.a. geweldige muziek van Santaolalla en Brouwer hebben we ook de opgewekte Escualo van Piazzolla opgenomen, met virtuoze solo’s van violiste Laura Lunansky.

Unieke tegenprestaties!
Voor deze CD-opname hebben we de mooiste studio in Nederland gekozen: studio 2 van het Muziekcentrum van de Omroep in Hilversum; de oudste radiostudio van Nederland. Donateurs voor onze CD kunnen als tegenprestatie o.a. kiezen om aanwezig te zijn bij de komende opnames in het monumentale pand van het MCO. Maar we hebben nog meer bijzondere tegenprestaties bedacht als dank voor jullie donaties. We mogen bijvoorbeeld een middag op bezoek in de werkplaats van de gelauwerde componist Aart Strootman, waar hij ons gaat vertellen over zijn werk, het bouwen van nieuwe instrumenten, de laatste ontwikkelingen in de hedendaagse muziek en natuurlijk over zijn Anachronisme #3.

Als gitaarensemble met studenten die opleidingen in allerlei richtingen volgen, bieden we jullie ook een paar lezingen aan waar leden van het ensemble een presentatie houden over hun vakgebied en onderzoeken. Vanzelfsprekend zullen we daar ook muziek van onze nieuwe CD spelen. En wat dacht u van uw naam of logo op het boekje van de CD? Of kaarten ontvangen voor onze release-concerten, het verkrijgen van onze CD of de (beperkt beschikbare) kerst special? :)

Uw hulp nodig
We hebben al een deel van onze opnames achter de rug, maar er staan nog twee opnamedagen op de planning. Om deze te realiseren, maar ook voor het editen en mixen van de opnames, de productie van de CD, de promotie en het organiseren van release-concerten, hebben we uw hulp nodig!

De uitdaging om in deze tijden een CD op te nemen is heel groot, niet alleen op muzikaal, maar ook op logistiek terrein (aantal spelers, grote afstanden bij de repetities en opnames, soms online repetities, fysieke beperkingen, etc.). Toch willen we deze uitdaging aangaan (natuurlijk alle maatregelen nalevend), in de overtuiging dat met of zonder pandemie, muziek ons altijd allemaal helpt. Helpt u ons ook?

The Studenten Gitaar Ensemble Nederland, conductor: Susana Opanski
We are a classical guitar ensemble for students – a unique phenomenon in the Netherlands. After playing many concerts across the country, touring abroad and releasing our first cd ‘Noches de guitarras’, we celebrated our 5-year anniversary last year with a big concert in the Stadsschouwburg in Utrecht together with a choir and many guest players as well as soloists. It was an evening we won’t forget!

What we didn’t know back then, was that just a few months later we were to discover that music is not only important when celebrating, but can also be a source of comfort and consolation in times of isolation, uncertainty, and loneliness. Despite not being able to rehearse and play concerts together due to the coronavirus restrictions, we kept on practicing, met up with each other online, and recorded from home.

Vitamin G
It might seem strange to you to start a new project in difficult times like these. But is it? During quarantine, we became more aware of the energy and mental support we got from one of our closest quarantine-mates: the guitar. We call this: Vitamin G. To give everyone a much-needed Vitamin G boost, we decided to record a second cd! With this cd, we want to share with you the magic effect guitar music can have.

An innovativerepertoire
For this cd, we have selected beautiful music from the 20th and 21st centuries. We hope this ambitious repertoire will take our ensemble to a whole new musical level. Besides original guitar music, we will also play pieces we have arranged for guitar ensemble ourselves, like Philipp Glass’ Mishima and works fromBèla Bartok and Luciano Berio. We are also delighted to record two works that will be recorded professionally for the first time: Lorca Concerto, by Gerald Garcia, and Anachronisme #3 by Aart Strootman. The first piece, written for guitar duet and guitar ensemble is a tribute to the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Anachronism #3 is a piece that is composed especially for us by Aart Strootman, one of the most notable Dutch composers of this time. Also collaborating with us on this cd is virtuoso violinist Laura Lunansky, with whom we have recorded the lively and exciting Escualo by Piazzolla.

To record our cd, we have chosen studio 2 at the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep (MCO) building in Hilversum: the oldest radio studio in The Netherlands! Donors have the unique opportunity to be present at one of our recording sessions at this monumental studio.

We have already recorded part of our new album, but we still need two recording sessions to complete the project. To be able to do this, as well as the editing and mixing, the production of the cd, and the promotion of our release concerts, we need your help!

Recording a cd during a pandemic brings about many challenges. Not only musically, but also logistically - regulating the number of players being together in a room, maintaining enough distance during the rehearsals, having to rehearse online, etc. However, we are willing to overcome these challenges (following government rules) because we believe that music can help us during these difficult times.
