"Dancing is movement, alone or together. It is dialogue with yourself and others. An expression of feelings, thoughts and circumstances. Dance is visual, musical, theatrical, dramatic, literary and always in the now. It connects tradition and progress, friends and foes, light and dark. There is beauty in every dance. That is why we are inviting our audiences to join the dance for Beirut and contribute.”
In een brief
Lieve mens,
ENGLISH SUMMARY
The goal of Dance for Beirut is to contribute to the performing arts in a sustainable way, offering support that has long-term benefits for artists and the communities they live in.
Performing artists have the exceptional gift of guiding their audiences into other worlds. Side by side they sow moments of beauty that grow into hope and action, especially in times of crisis. They can heal the mental wounds of a community. Performing artists often contribute to humanitarian aid. However, they rarely receive it.
A recent survey within the Dutch performing arts sector showed that there is a willingness and desire to do something for the performing artists in Beirut; in solidarity with each other, even though we are all struggling in these pandemic times.
As such, on 24th October 2020, this iniative ‘Dance for Beirut’ was launched: a solidarity campaign by the Dutch performing arts for performing artists in Beirut. In no time, a dozen organisations contributed to an online show with 16 stage performers, 4 speakers, 8 technicians and a 3-headed production team. More information on the website of Dance for Beirut.
The principle of this campaign is simple: performing artists ask their audience and partners to contribute to the well-being of colleagues in crisis. All participating artists receive a modest fee. We sustainably invest the funds raised in projects by performing artists in disaster areas, who, despite their ordeal, continue to provide social-artistic work to rebuild and reconnect their community.
