When the Ear meets the Eye

Club Classique - Moving Art (English)
In Moving Art, Club Classique shows how paintings sound and what music looks like, during a tour throughout the country.
When the Ear meets the Eye
Never before have 'tableaux vivants' (living paintings) been so popular as during the first lockdown: Instagram was flooded with lifelike copies of the most beautiful paintings, recreated in the living room with home, garden and kitchen accessories.
Enchanted by the most beautiful melodies, paintings slowly start moving and the characters suddenly step out of their frame after centuries of lockdown. It almost looks like the publication of a new Harry Potter book. But no, it’s Club Classique, with a brand new performance wherein nothing is what it seems and everything turns out to be possible. Moving Art is a project in which we connect classical music and painting in a unique way. During a tour of 20 performances, paintings on film come to life, while the musicians of Club Classique play live music.
Club Classique
You can come across us anywhere: in a theatre, around the corner in a bar, at home on the telly or in the wild, in a meadow for example. We are also a welcome guest on radio and TV, such as Podium Witteman, a well-known Dutch TV-show about classical music. In a performance by Club Classique, worlds come together, music and images merge and stories are turned into music. It is a feast for the senses. Do you want to know more about Club Classique? Check out our website or follow us on Instagram!
From Schubert to Shostakovich, from Vermeer to Rembrandt
Music, paintings and film merge seamlessly. Whether it is Rothko who makes your heart beat faster, or maybe Waterhouse, there is something for everybody. Even Rembrandt never came out better. Sultry flute melodies, melancholic strings, a dreamy Debussy and the fierce reality of Shostakovich. You are effortlessly transported into the magical world behind the paintings.
Five paintings come to life!
Before we can surprise you with a unique performance, we want to bring five more paintings to life on film. Therefore we need your help! Is it Van Gogh that sometimes makes you shed a tear, or is it Rockwell you never get tired of? They will all pass by, if you help us to breathe new life into these canvases!
Who are we?
Cellist Leonard Besseling and violinist Myrthe Helder form the beating heart of Club Classique and connect the films, paintings and music in a narrative way. They have joined forces with filmmaker Gijs Besseling: a cinematographic centipede with whom they have already pushed genres to their boundaries. The result is a whole new experience for all senses.
