Hola! My name is Lyla Carrillo Quan de van der Kaaden. A Photographer who was born and raised in Guatemala, Latin America, and who since 2005 lives in Almere, a new and multicultural city in the Netherlands with 148 nationalities.

During these last years,I have had the privilege of meeting many women with different cultural backgrounds, who, like me, have emigrated for different reasons. In all their stories I recognized something of my own experiences inspiring me to combine my passion for photography and interest in art and anthropology in a project I call “Women of Almere”.

The project is a kind of research into emancipation and diversity and aims to highlight, in a visual and narrative way, the importance of the role of the women who live in this city, especially migrants, and how they maintain and transmit their culture and traditions.

The book "Latin Women of Almere" is part of the pilot with a collection of inspiring stories with portraits where the main characters are 19 Latin women of different nationalities from former European colonies and Spain who share with us their personal story of how they came to this country and city. Integration and identity are recurring themes in the stories of the migrants who have all experienced their moments of weakness, but whose positive attitude helps them to move forward. The future objective is to continue with the rest of the continents.

Why is this book important?
Because it offers a stage for migrant women in Almere to tell their stories, inspire each other, and it could form a bridge between cultures. It is also a start to understanding as it can serve as a tool or basis for discussion not only with adults but also with young people. As we all know: the most effective way to support change is to raise awareness and education.

Especially for this book, the Almere City Archives wrote a short introduction about the city and made a number of aerial photographs available. As also wrote the following: - quote- It would be an honor for the Almere City Archives if the stories and photographs of the special project “Women of Almere” could also become part of the collection. It would further enrich the city's history."- unquote"-

Thanks to my friend Babette Rondón who helped to review the texts and translating them into the Dutch language the stories are now available on the project website www.womenofalmere.nl and now in the book, we want to publish with your help.

Everything is almost ready: the portraits with the stories as a beautiful and colorful Latin design of the book I have worked on from a distance with Isabel Pineda, a Guatemalan designer.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lyla studied to be a teacher. After living in the United States for a year to broaden her study, she returned to her country and began studying graphic design, during which time she taught art at a Guatemalan high school. In 1992, attracted by the desire to learn more about European art and culture, she traveled to Paris as an au pair in order to study the language and see the European masterpieces that she only knew from books. That summer, during her two-month "backpacking" (Interrail) trip around Europe, she met a Dutchman who she later married in Guatemala at the end of 1993.

Lyla went to live in Maassluis, the Netherlands where she changed the focus of her studies to Business Administration at Webster University in Leiden, an international university. She worked for the Bolivian Embassy in The Hague. During that period (1996-1998) she met Babette Rondón who was working at the Peruvian Embassy. Their friendship eventually led to a collaboration in the current Project Women of Almere.

At the end of 1998, Lyla emigrated with her husband to Guatemala where she immediately obtained a job as an assistant in the Development Program of the Dutch Embassy. Seeing that the situation of violence and insecurity in Guatemala was getting worse, and being now a mother of two children, she agreed to migrate back to the Netherlands, her husband's country of origin. In 2005, the family settled in Almere to start a new life.

Latin Women of Almere, een boek over hoe je obstakels kunt overwinnen en hoe je kunt werken aan "opnieuw beginnen zonder je achtergrond en identiteit te verliezen". Met deze crowdfunding willen we de kosten voor het ontwerpen en drukken van het boek in 2 talen dekken. Wilt u ons daarbij helpen?

Hola! Mijn naam isLyla Carrillo Quan, ik ben een fotografe die geboren en getogen is in Guatemala, Latijns-Amerika. Maar ik ben ook Lyla van der Kaaden, die sinds 2005 in Almere woont, een nieuwe en multiculturele stad in Nederland met 148 nationaliteiten.

In 2017 ben ik begonnen met een project genaamd"Vrouwen van Almere" dat op een visuele en verhalende manier het belang van de rol van de vrouwen die in deze stad wonen wil benadrukken, met bijzondere aandacht voor migranten. Het boek "Latin Women of Almere" maakt deel uit van de pilot. De hoofdpersonen zijn 19 Latijns-Amerikaanse vrouwen van verschillende nationaliteiten uit de voormalige Europese koloniën en uit Spanje die hun persoonlijke verhaal over hun komst naar dit land en deze stad met ons delen. Het doel voor de toekomst is om verder te gaan met de rest van de continenten.

Waarom is dit boek belangrijk?

Omdat het een podium biedt aan migrantenvrouwen uit Almere om hun verhalen te vertellen en elkaar te inspireren. Het zou een brug kunnen vormen tussen culturen en een begin van begrip voor elkaar, omdat het kan dienen als een instrument of basis voor discussie, niet alleen met volwassenen, maar ook met jongeren. De meest effectieve manier om verandering te ondersteunen is door bewustwording en educatie.

Speciaal voor dit boek schreef Stadsarchief Almere een korte inleiding over de stad en stelde uit de huidige tentoonstelling Almere Boven een aantal luchtfoto’s beschikbaar. Ze schreven ook: - quote- "Voor Stadsarchief Almere zou het een eer zijn als ook de verhalen en de foto’s van het bijzondere project Women of Almere onderdeel zouden worden van de collectie. Het zou de geschiedenis van de stad verder verrijken".- unquote

Het is bijna klaar. De portretten met de verhalen; en aan een mooi en kleurrijk Latijns-Amerikaans ontwerp van het boek heb ik op afstand gewerkt met Isabel Pineda, een Guatemalteekse grafisch ontwerper.

Wat we nu nodig hebben is uw steun om de kosten van de druk en de lay-out van een Engelse en Spaanse editie van het boek te dekken. Dit is een zeer kostbaar gebeuren.
