Ik ben Karel Tuytschaever. Ik ben acteur, docent en onderzoeker in de kunsten en maak ook eigen werk: (dans)performances, publicaties, installaties en films. (www.platformbarry.be & www.dansbrabant.nl). In mijn werk onderzoek ik voortdurend wat oprechte belichaming binnen de kunsten kan zijn en betekenen. Met mijn nieuwe film EASY TIGER (30’) wil ik voor iedereen relevante inzichten uit dit onderzoek - we hebben immers allemaal een lijf - delen met een breed internationaal publiek. De film gaat in première in juni 2021.

EASY TIGER is nauw verweven met de culturele omgeving van Doven en slechthorenden. Mijn intentie is om een ​​film te maken die zoveel mogelijk een gelijkwaardige ervaring biedt voor zowel horende als niet-horende gemeenschappen. Dit door de dubbelzinnige verhouding tussen lichaam en geest, het gesprokene en onuitgesprokene te omarmen, door de poëzie van het lichaam voor de lens te plaatsen, vanuit dieper onderzoek naar de bedachtzame (af)(aan)wezigheid van lichaam, gebarentaal en gesproken talen.

Alle donaties dragen bij in de kosten van onze specifieke aanpak en zijn daarom essentieel: (1) een unieke beeldvoering door het huren van specifieke cameralenzen om te focussen op de lichamelijkheid en de lichamen bijna tastbaar te maken door het scherm heen, (2) een bijzondere aanwezigheid van taal doorheen de film door een samenwerking met vertalers en tolken, en (3) een sounddesign dat geluid tastbaar maakt door middel van diepe bastonen, gemaakt van speciale geluidsopnames op de set.

KORTE SYNOPSIS

Wat als een onverwachte amoureuze ontmoeting met een mannelijke, dove cliënt een psycholoog dwingt zijn eigen intieme binnenwereld te verkennen, als de enige manier om erachter te komen wie hij werkelijk is?

Vervreemd door het isolement van zijn schijnbaar perfecte leven naar de buitenwereld, richt hij al zijn ongekende verlangens op zijn cliënt. Hun ontmoeting verlegt de grenzen van de man tot een extreem onvermogen om zijn eigen menselijke behoeften te begrijpen en te omarmen. De nieuwe liefde dwingt de psycholoog om zijn onvermogen om zichzelf te begrijpen bloot te leggen. De intense ontmoeting dreigt zijn persoonlijke leven voor altijd op zijn kop te zetten.

Waar de aard van lichamen verstrikt zit in de cultuur van het stadsleven, tast EASY TIGER de grenzen af ​​van een man op zoek naar zichzelf door middel van een ware en onoverkomelijke romance.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Een therapeut is een kwetsbaar persoon.

Vanuit de relatie en bepaalde overeenkomsten die ik zie tussen de therapeut en mijzelf als kunstenaar die de wereld wil begrijpen door zijn beroep uit te oefenen, zich daarbij positioneert in de samenleving en de ander via zijn werk uitnodigt tot ontvankelijkheid en (opnieuw) voelen, schreef ik een scenario waarin ik bewust de rol van de therapeut binnenstebuiten keer.

Hoe zit het met de onzekerheid die de therapeut soms voelt, de machteloosheid, de twijfel, de verveling, de vervreemding, de schuld en de seksuele aantrekkingskracht die er soms tussen hem en de cliënt bestaat? Wat als de man zichzelf nodig heeft als therapeut?

Het toepassen van zijn technieken op zijn eigen geest - zonder het vermogen om afstand te nemen, met cliënten in zijn praktijk als een 'onstabiele' spiegel - is allesbehalve vanzelfsprekend. Hier bestaat een interessante paradox voor mij die ik voor de lens wil plaatsen. In deze tussenruimte schuurt de therapeut zijn sociale, publieke lichaam (zijn rol in de samenleving) met zijn intieme, private, private lichaam (mens-zijn).

Tweeënhalf jaar lang heb ik onderzoek gedaan naar en geschreven over een man achter zijn eigen spiegel en heb ik een scenario gedestilleerd dat mijn therapeut volledig uitkleedt en binnenstebuiten keert. Ik maak een machteloze therapeut zichtbaar, die zichzelf zoekt en zijn eigen vijand lijkt te zijn geworden. Het scenario verbindt verschillende kantelpunten uit het leven van de man gedurende een jaar. Met een bewust fragmentarisch verhaal wil ik de kijker dezelfde verwarring laten voelen waarmee de hoofdpersoon zelf wordt geconfronteerd en worstelt.

Met dit audiovisuele werk wil ik de menselijke kwetsbaarheid - achter het masker van onze rol in een samenleving - zichtbaar maken en de ruimte bieden om te bestaan, om mens te zijn, in het huidige veranderende sociale landschap waarin we leven.

VISIE OP DE BEELDVOERING

De verwarrende paradox tussen enerzijds het publieke lichaam (rol) van de protagonist en zijn intieme privé-lichaam (zijn), en anderzijds de schurende relatie tussen zijn hoofd en lichaam, vertalen zich in de manier waarop alles wordt gefilmd.

Ik wil een rustige, langzame, stabiele beeldtaal gebruiken (zoals bij mijn vorige film BARE ROMANCE). Lange takes gebruiken, met weinig knipwerk in de montage. Hierdoor gaat de focus in de film naar de essentie van de scènes en kan de ervaring van de kijker gaan naar de details van de lichamen in de registratie.

Ik wil kwetsbare mensen zichtbaar maken tussen de gesproken taal (taal is naar mijn mening een emotioneel gekleurde constructie waar we ons vaak achter verschuilen in een poging om onze echte innerlijke wereld tastbaar te maken) door middel van een cinematografie die focust op de fysieke ruimte van de hoofdpersoon, en zijn relatie met zijn lichaam, zijn intieme lichamelijkheid.

INTRO

I am Karel Tuytschaever. I am an actor, lecturer and researcher in the arts and make my own work: (dance) performances, publications, installations and films. (www.platformbarry.be & www.dansbrabant.nl). In my work, I am constantly exploring what sincere embodiment within the arts can be and mean. With my new film EASY TIGER (30'), I want to share insights from this research that are relevant to everyone - after all, we all have a body - with a wide international audience. The film will premiere in June 2021.

Specifically, EASY TIGER is closely interwoven with the cultural environment of the Deaf and hard of hearing. My intend is to make a film that provides as much as possible an equivalent experience for both hearing and non-hearing communities. This by embracing the ambiguous relationship between body & mind, the spoken & unspoken, by putting the poetic potential of embodiment in front of the lens, with researching the thoughtful (ab)(pre)sence of body, sign, and spoken languages.

All donations contribute to the costs of our specific approach to filming and are therefore essential: (1) a unique imagery by renting specific camera lenses to focus on the physicality and make the bodies almost tangible through the screen, (2) a special presence of language throughout the film through a collaboration with translators and interpreters, and (3) a sound design that makes sound tangible using deep bass tones, made of special sound recordings on set.

SHORT SYNOPSIS

What if an unexpected amorous encounter with a male, deaf client forces a psychologist to explore his intimate inner world for himself, as the only way to find out who he is?

Alienated by the isolation of his seemingly perfect life to the outside world, he directs all his unprecedented desires towards his client. Their meeting further stretches the man's boundaries to an extreme inability to understand and embrace his own human needs. The new love forces the psychologist to expose his inability to understand himself. The intense encounter threatens to turn his personal life upside down forever.

Where the nature of bodies is entangled in the culture of urban life, EASY TIGER explores the boundaries of a man in search of himself through a true and insurmountable romance.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

A therapist is a vulnerable person.

From the relationship and certain similarities that I see between the therapist and myself as an artist who wants to understand the world by practising his profession, thereby positions himself within society and invites the other through his work to receptivity and (re)feeling, I wrote a scenario in which I consciously turn the role of the therapist inside out.

What about the insecurity that the therapist sometimes feels, the powerlessness, the doubt, the boredom, the alienation, the guilt, and the sexual attraction that sometimes exists between him and the client? What if the man needs himself as a therapist?

Applying his tools to his own mind - without the ability to distance himself, with clients in his practice as an "unstable" mirror - is anything but self-evident. Here is an interesting paradox for me that I want to put in front of the lens. In this in-between space, the therapist scours his social, public body (his role in society) with his intimate, private, private body (being human).

For two and a half years, I researched and wrote about a man behind his own mirror, distilling a scenario that completely strips my therapist and tucks him inside out. I make a powerless therapist visible, who seeks himself and seems to have become his own enemy. The scenario connects several tipping points from the man's life over one year. Through a deliberately fragmentary narrative, I want to make the viewer feel the same confusion that the protagonist himself is confronted with and struggles with.

With this audiovisual work, Iwant to make visible the human vulnerability - behind the mask of our role in a society - and offer the space to exist, to be human, in the current shifting social landscape in which we live.

VISION ON THE IMAGERY

The confusing paradox between the protagonist's public body (role) and his intimate private body (being) on the one hand, as well as the abrasive relationship between his head and body on the other, translate into the way everything is portrayed.

I want to use a calm, slow, steady imagery (like with my previous film BARE ROMANCE). Using long takes, with little cutting in the edit. As a result, the focus in the film goes to the essence of the scenes, and the viewer's experience can go to the details of the bodies in the registration.

I want to make vulnerable people visible between the spoken language (language is, in my view, an emotionally coloured construction behind which we often hide in an attempt to make our real inner world tangible) through cinematography that focuses on the protagonist's physical space, and his relationship with his body, his intimate physicality.
