who am i?
My name is Jaya. I am from America and moved to Amsterdam 3 years ago to to study at the National Ballet Academy. Since I was about 14 years old I had 7 huge sketchbooks filled with my art. I always feel like it was just a hobby until I moved to the Netherlands and learned the Dutch language. What fascinated me the most was how the direct English translations sounded really interesting and funny. (nail pants? pepper nuts? going to get a fresh nose?) This inspired me to draw what that would literally look like.

why & how?
I have loved fashion from an early age and I knew my designs would go well with clothes. However, the more I learned about the fashion industry and how it destroys the environment and wastes a lot of water, I knew I didn't want to just make any old clothes. I want to print all my designs on second-hand clothing, so that no more new clothing has to be made for JINKS. That way it is not harmful to the environment and we prevent good clothing from being thrown away. I am very passionate about this and think it is a very original and sustainable concept.

who am i?
Mijn naam is Jaya. Ik kom uit Amerika en ben 3 jaar geleden naar Amsterdam verhuisd om les te volgen op het Nationale Ballet Academie. Sinds ik ongeveer 14 jaar oud was had ik 7 enorme schetsboeken gevuld met mijn kunst. Ik heb altijd het gevoel dat het gewoon een hobby was, totdat ik naar Nederland verhuisde en de Nederlandse taal leerde. Wat mij het meest fascineerde was hoe de directe Engelse vertalingen echt interessant en grappig klonken. (nail pants? pepper nuts? going to get a fresh nose?) Dit inspireerde me om te tekenen hoe dat er letterlijk uit zou zien.

why & how?
Ik hou al van jongs af aan van mode en ik wist dat mijn designs goed zouden passen op kleding. Maar, hoe meer ik leerde over de mode-industrie en hoe het het milieu vernietigt en heel veel water verspilt, wist ik dat ik niet zo maar kleding wilde maken. Al mijn designs wil ik op tweedehands kleding printen, zodat er voor JINKS niet nog meer kleding gemaakt hoeft te worden. Op die manier is het niet nadelig voor het milieu en voorkomen we dat goede kleding weggegooid wordt. Ik ben hier erg gepassioneerd in en denk dat het een heel origineel en duurzaam concept is.
