Bram, een zichtbaar nerveuze man, wacht in een café ongeduldig op zijn vriend John. Buiten komt het met bakken uit de hemel. Als John eindelijk arriveert ziet hij direct dat er iets mis is met Bram. Na aandringen doet Bram zijn geheim uit de doeken: hij is ervan overtuigd dat hij op dit moment droomt.

John probeert het bizarre idee in de eerste instantie uit Brams hoofd te praten, maar hoe langer het gesprek duurt, des te meer ook hij begint te twijfelen aan zijn eigen realiteit.

Maar hoe is Bram eigenlijk zo zeker dat juist hij degene is die droomt…?

Wat als, nu je dit leest, je je ineens begint af te vragen of je wel wakker bent? Hoe weet je zeker dat je op dit moment niet droomt? Je voelt waarschijnlijk dat je met honderd procent zekerheid kan stellen dat je wakker bent, maar zou je die conclusie niet ook in een droom kunnen trekken? Misschien word je straks wel wakker en begint je dag dan pas. Maar wat als je niet meer wakker kunt worden? Hoe kom je dan nog uit je eigen hoofd? En ben je nog wel jezelf als je wakker wordt? Misschien ben je wel een oude vrouw in een bejaardentehuis die slechts over jou droomde - en besta jij helemaal niet.

Dit zijn dingen die mij mateloos fascineren en waar ik graag een film over wil maken. Over het ongelimiteerde bereik van het onderbewustzijn, maar ook over de humor en absurditeit van het feit dat wij onszelf nacht op nacht voor de gek houden, en elke ochtend wakker worden met het besef dat we er weer in zijn getuind.

Vorm en Stijl

Met Tafel 8 zie ik een spannende, dialooggedreven film van ongeveer tien minuten voor me. Eén scène, waarin Bram John probeert te overtuigen van het feit dat ze beiden in de droom van Bram zitten - en John dus alleen in Brams onderbewustzijn bestaat.John vraagt op zijn beurt waarom ze eigenlijk per se in Brams hoofd moeten zitten, en niet in het zijne. Deze absurde situatie ontaardt gaandeweg in een verbaal schaakspel waarin beide mannen hun gelijk proberen te halen.

Wanneer je het over dromen in films hebt praat je al snel over David Lynch en Luis Buñuel. Beiden zijn al zolang ik films maak van grote invloed op me. Met name de combinatie van wrange humor en beangstigende spanning uit de films van David Lynch is bij deze film relevant. Echter ben ik wel van plan ben iets conceptueler te werk te gaan en wil ik meer gebruik maken van regels en structuur, zoals Christopher Nolan vaak doet in zijn films (met name in Inception). Ook de film Waking Life van Richard Linklater zorgt voor veel inspiratie en houvast.Hoewel Tafel 8 grotendeels uit dialoog bestaat wil ik alle mogelijke filmische middelen inzetten om er een sfeervolle vertelling van te maken. En hoewel Bram zijn geheim niet direct uit de doeken doet,moet er vanaf het eerste moment al een dromerig en surrealistisch gevoel in de film zitten, als een hint naar de ware thematiek.

'Tafel 8' moet een grappige, spannende en dromerige film worden die de kijker van begin tot eind meetrekt in Bram en Johns absurde puzzel.

Een deel van financiering is al rond, maar om de film te kunnen maken zoals we die voor ogen hebben hebben we jullie donaties hard nodig!

Bram, clearly nervous, sits in a bar and impatiently awaits the arrival of his friend John. It's pouring with rain outside. When John finally arrives he immediately notices there's something wrong with Bram. At first Bram seems too afraid to speak his mind, but John insists he tell him what's wrong. Bram looks around the room, leans over and whispers: he is convinced that at this very moment, he's dreaming.

At first John tries to talk Bram out of his absurd idea. But the longer the conversation lasts, the more he, too, starts to question his own reality.

But how can Bram be so sure he is the one who's dreaming...?

Table 8

What if, while reading this, you suddenly start to wonder whether or not you're awake? How can you be sure you're not actually dreaming right now? You're probably a hundred percent certain you're awake. But wouldn't you draw that same conclusion in a dream? Maybe you'll awaken in a moment, to only then start your day. But what if you can't wake up? How will you get out of your head? And will you be the same person when you wake up? Perhaps you’re an old woman in a nursing home, merely dreaming of you – and you don't even really exist.

For years, I’ve been wanting to make a film exploring these topics, which have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. The mystery of our subconscious, the absurdity of the fact that we willingly fool ourselves night after night, strangely combining elements of our lives into these stories, for an audience of one - all of it comes together in Table 8.

Style and Inspiration

Table 8 will be a dialogue-driven short film of +/-10 minutes. One single scene, in which Bram tries to convince John of the fact they're in his dream -meaning John only exists inside Bram’s mind. John poses the counterquestion of why they should be in Bram's head, and not in his. The absurd situation turns into a verbal chess match, in which both men try to disprove one another.

When we’re talking about dreams in film, Luis Buñuel and David Lynch quickly come to mind. Both have had a great influence on me ever since I started making films. Especially the blend of poignant humor and gut-wrenching suspense in Lynch's films are relevant forTable 8. I am however planning on setting some rules for myself and the film's narrative structure, much like Christopher Nolan often does in his films (especially in Inception). I also look to Richard Linklater's Waking Life for inspiration. Although Table 8 mostly consists of dialogue, I do intent to use all necessary means to give the film a cinematic feel. And although Bram doesn't reveal his secret right away, there should be a dreamlike and surreal feeling present from the first shot, hinting at the true theme of the film.

Table 8 will be a witty, suspenseful and dreamlike film that invites you to solve its mystery along with the characters.
