What is Aberdene 1662?

“Th’earth’s but a point of the world, and a man
Is but a point to the Earth”

Aberdene 1662 is an intimate collection of stunning Scottish & English 17th century song and improvisation, much of it recorded here for the very first time.
Focussing on John Forbes’s “Song’s and Fancies” (pub. Aberdeen, 1662), we combine little-known Scottish songs with a fresh, intimate take on the more familiar repertoire from England contained in the volume. Interspersed with this are the stunning improvisatory ricerares of Mikko Perkola. We recorded the whole programme in the solitude and space surrounding the Arvo Pärt Centre, which has infused the recording with an extraordinarily intimate atmosphere.

The Artists - who are we?
We are a duo of soprano voice and viola da gamba, working together now for two years, and passionate about creating fresh, spontaneous and emotionally moving performances of early music.

Maria Valdmaa (MMus, Koninklijk Conservatorium) is a specialist in Early Music originally from Estonia, currently living in the Netherlands. Highlights of her international performance career include frequent engagements with Dutch Bach Society, as well as the Audience Prize and Second Overall Winner of the prestigious London Handel Singing Competition.

Mikko Perkola (MMus, Koninklijk Conservatorium) is a Finnish viola da gambist well known to Early Music audiences in the Netherlands and internationally. As well as an impressive discography, he has performed with a wide variety of ensembles, and is a member of both the Finnish Baroque Orchestra and the UMO Jazz Orchestra.

With our shared Baltic heritage, we quickly hit it off, and found ourselves drawn to exploring programmes that brought together seventeenth-century music from across Europe with Nordic repertoire, inspiring Mikko to use his improvisatory talents.
Together, we are seeking your help with a very special recording project.

Why is this music so special?
Last year, we came across the very first example of secular music printed in Scotland.
John Forbes’s Cantus, or ‘Songs and Fancies’, is an astonishing collection published in Aberdeen (in the north of Scotland), in 1662. It contains some stunningly beautiful Scottish music, alongside some better-known repertoire by English composers such as John Dowland and Thomas Campion, from earlier in the century. Much of this beautiful music is very little known, and some has never even been recorded. We are looking forward to sharing these extraordinary songs with the wider music world.

Why is this recording so unique?
As well as unique repertoire, this recording will offer a unique insight into the world of seventeenth century Scottish music, as well as illustrating the important exchange of musical traditions between Scotland and England, which were two entirely different countries at this time!
John Forbes’s printed collection contains only the cantus part — the top vocal part — and there is no printed bass part! Regardless, we know that historically these songs would have usually been performed with some kind of accompaniment, and certainly they sound richer for it.

So, we have approached the book in our own way, with the viola da gamba as an improvising, accompanying instrument for the solo voice. And with just a solo voice and viola da gamba, we hope to bring a beautiful clarity and intimacy to this wonderful music.
We were fortunate to be allowed to record in the Arvo Pärt Centre, Estonia. The venue is deep in a pine forest and close to the sea — in fact, a location which looks and feels remarkably like northern Scotland! This was the perfect acoustic and location for such a journey of musical exploration.
The addition of improvisation in the main repertoire, as well as improvisatory tracks between the early songs, adds a unique flavour and pairs well with the meditative and melancholy tone of this historical repertoire.

We are so close to sharing this stunning music with the world, but we need your help for the last hurdle!
With the recording now completed, we are asking for your help to bring this music to the public – to print CDs with all the expenses that it entails. Aberdene 1662 is een intieme verzameling van prachtige 17e-eeuwse Schotse en Engelse liedjes en improvisaties, waarvan een groot deel voor het eerst is opgenomen.

Gefocust op John Forbes “Song’s and Fancies” (gepub. Aberdeen, 1662), combineren wij de weinig bekende Schotse liedjes op een frisse, intieme manier met het beter bekende Engelse repertoire. Deze wisselen zich af met verbluffende improvisatorische ricercares van gambist Mikko Perkola. Het programma is opgenomen in het Arvo Pärt Center in Estland, waar de sobere, bijna eenzame omgeving de opnames een buitengewoon intieme sfeer heeft gegeven.

Wie zijn wij?
Als duo van sopraan en viola da gamba, werken we al twee jaar samen. We hebben een gezamelijke passie voor Oude Muziek en vooral voor het creëren van frisse, spontane en emotioneel ontroerende uitvoeringen hiervan.

Maria Valdmaa (MMus, Koninklijk Conservatorium), een specialist in Oude Muziek, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Estland, momenteel woonachtig in Nederland. Hoogtepunten uit haar internationale performancecarrière zijn onder meer de frequente engagementen met de Nederlandse Bachvereniging, als ook de publieksprijs en de tweede-overall-winnaar van de prestigieuze London Handel Singing Competition.

Mikko Perkola (MMus, Koninklijk Conservatorium), een Finse viola da gambist, staat goed bekend bij het Oude Muziek-publiek in binnen- en buitenland. Naast een indrukwekkende discografie, heeft hij opgetreden in een grote variëteit van ensembles en is hij lid van zowel het Finnish Baroque Orchestra als het UMO Jazz Orchestra.

Wat maakt deze muziek zo bijzonder?
Vorig jaar kregen we de allereerste publicatie van in de Schotland gedrukte seculiere muziek in onze handen.
John Forbes zijn Cantus, ofwel “Songs and Fancies”, is een verbazingwekkende verzameling die in 1662 in Aberdeen (in het noorden van Schotland) werd gepubliceerd. Het bevat verbluffend mooie Schotse muziek, naast wat bekender repertoire van Engelse componisten zoals John Dowland en Thomas Campion (van eerder in de eeuw). Veel van deze prachtige muziek is nog weinig bekend, sommige liedjes zijn zelfs nooit opgenomen. We kijken ernaar uit, om deze buitengewone nummers te kunnen delen met de rest van de (muziek)wereld.

Waarom is deze opname zo uniek?
Niet alleen de repertoire van deze opname is uniek, maar ook het inzicht in de wereld van de 17e-eeuwse Schotse muziek, wat de belangrijke uitwisseling van muzikale tradities tussen Schotland en Engeland illustreert (dan nog twee totaal verschillende landen!).
De gedrukte collectie van John Forbes bevat alleen de cantuspartij - de bovenste, vocale partij - er is geen geprinte partij voor de bas! We weten dat deze nummers oorspronkelijk met begeleiding werden uitgevoerd, daardoor werd de klank rijker.
Zo hebben we het boek van Forbes op onze eigen manier benaderd, met de viola da gamba als improviserend begeleidingsinstrument voor de solostem, hopend op deze manier helderheid en intimiteit aan deze zeldzame, prachtige muziek te kunnen geven.

We hadden het geluk gehad om in het Arvo Pärt Center, in Estland, onze opnames te mogen realiseren. De locatie - diep in een dennenbos en dicht bij de zee - het voelt aan als Noord-Schotland! Voor onze reis van muzikale verkenning was dit de perfecte locatie met de perfecte akoestiek. De toevoeging van improvisatie aan het hoofdrepertoire, evenals improvisatietracks tussen de oudere liederen, zorgen voor een uniek karakter wat goed past bij de meditatieve en melancholische toon van deze historische repertoire.

Waar wordt het geld voor gebruikt?
Nu de opnames voltooid zijn, staat ons nog de laatste stap te doen: een album uitbrengen! Met jouw hulp kunnen we dit unieke en weinig bekende oude muziekrepertoire ook met de rest van de wereld gaan delen!
