BOEK: NOWHERE - Imagining The Global City

Ik ben Frank van der Salm, fotograaf/kunstenaar. Ik woon in Rotterdam en werk in grote steden over de hele wereld, vooral in Azië, de VS, Europa en de Golfstaten. Mijn werk heeft een ontwikkeling doorgemaakt van landschap naar stedenbouw en architectuur. Architectuur die steeds nadrukkelijker onderdeel is van onze beeldcultuur. NOWHERE toont een wereld waarin Instagrammability voorop staat: waarin de ontworpen werkelijkheid wordt gedicteerd door het verleidelijke beeld dat er (later) van kan worden gemaakt, in dienst van de globaal opererende ‘big business’. Overal ter wereld van dezelfde anti-sceptische schoonheid.

Monografie ontworpen door Irma Boom
Met grafisch vormgever Irma Boom leg ik nu de laatste hand aan een boek waarin mijn werk van de afgelopen vijfentwintig jaar samenkomt. Irma heeft de vrije hand gehad om los te gaan op mijn werk. Het resultaat is een ongelooflijk spannend boek met meer dan 240 foto- en videowerken. Beelden – soms ondersteboven – ondervragen elkaar over de werkelijkheid die ze vertegenwoordigen. Samen vormen ze het beeld van een consumptiegerichte, denkbeeldige wereldstad die plotseling overal lijkt te zijn en tegelijkertijd nergens: zowel now here als nowhere. De 368 pagina’s dikke pil op groot formaat is straks verkrijgbaar met drie verschillende covers.

Teksten van Shumon Basar, Aaron Betsky en Urs Stahel
De teksten in NOWHERE verbinden mijn werk met de wereld van design, architectuur, stedenbouw, kunst en fotografie. Shumon Basar is schrijver, redacteur, en curator o.a. van het Global Art Forum in Dubai. Aaron Betsky is directeur van de School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech (VS) en publiceert regelmatig over kunst, architectuur en design. Urs Stahel is curator van MAST, Bologna (IT) en mede-oprichter van het Fotomuseum Winterthur.

Experiment met Artificial Intelligence
NOWHERE verschijnt in februari 2021, bij de opening van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Centraal in de tentoonstelling staat een monumentale videowand die wordt aangestuurd door Artificial Intelligence. Dat gebeurt in samenwerking met Gjorgji Strezoski, PhD aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Gebaseerd op een veelvoud van voor mij essentiële, subjectieve begrippen als 24/7, environment of alienation en de daaraan toegekende waarden brengt de computer objectieve verwantschappen tussen mijn beelden naar de oppervlakte. Dit werpt een totaal nieuw licht op mijn werk en de maatschappelijke betekenis daarvan. Ook in het boek wordt het experiment met AI zichtbaar gemaakt.

Waarom crowdfunding?
In handen van sterontwerper Irma Book groeide het boek uit tot een omvangrijke pil van 368 pagina’s. Maar ook tot een visueel avontuur dat kan wedijveren met de ervaring van de originele werken. Gedrukt in topkwaliteit door Lenoirschuring en spectaculair afgewerkt in drie coverversies. Dat alles gaat de (vroege) toezeggingen van het Mondriaan Fonds, het Breeman Talle Fonds (Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds) en het Jaap Harten Fonds– waarvoor dank! –ietwat te boven. Voor het dekken van de drukkosten van deze once-in-a-lifetime productie kunnen we jouw steun dan ook heel goed gebruiken!

Crowdfunding for my new book: NOWHERE - Imagining The Global City
I am Frank van der Salm, photographer/artist based in Rotterdam (NL) and working in metropolises all over the world, including Asia, the US, Europe and the Gulf. The focus of my work has developed from landscape to the urban environment and architecture, which is increasingly becoming part of our visual culture. NOWHERE shows a world in which Instagrammability is first and foremost; in which the new reality is dictated by the seductive image that may (later) be made from it, directed by the mechanisms of global big business. The same antiseptic beauty, all over the world.

Monograph designed by Irma Boom
Currently I am finishing the work on my next book, with graphic designer Irma Boom. This book collects all my images from the past twenty-five years. Irma has been given the freedom to do with the work what she wanted. The result is an exciting and unconventional book with over 240 photo and video works. Images – sometimes deliberately upside down – question each other about the reality they represent. Together, they form the image of a consumption-driven city that, all of a sudden, simultaneously seems to be everywhere and nowhere: both now here and nowhere. The 368 pages large format book will be available with three different cover versions.

Texts by Shumon Basar, Aaron Betsky en Urs Stahel
The texts in NOWHERE link my work to the world of design, architecture, urban development, art and photography. This substantial publication includes beautiful contributions by Shumon Basar (writer, editor, curator, Commissioner at the Global Art Forum in Dubai), Aaron Betsky (Director of School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech (VS), publishing regularly on art, architecture and design) and Urs Stahel (curator at MAST, Bologna (IT) and co-founder Fotomuseum Winterthur).

Experiment with Artificial Intelligence
NOWHERE will be published in February 2021, at the opening of the exhibition with the same title at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. For the exhibition we have created a monumental video wall, driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The research has been conducted by Gjorgji Strezoski, PhD candidate ate the University of Amsterdam. Based on subjective concepts like 24/7, environment or alienation and the values attributed to them, the computer will bring objective relationships between my images to the surface. This will shed a new light on the works and their social relevance. The book will also show the experiment with AI.

It has also become a visual adventure which can compete with the experience of the original works.
