De afgelopen jaren reisden wij, fotograaf Yvonne Brandwijk en journalist Stephanie Bakker, voor het Future Cities project naar vijf snelgroeiende wereldsteden. We gingen niet naar Mumbai of Shanghai, want dat die booming zijn, is algemeen bekend. Onze fascinatie gaat vooral uit naar de nieuwe economische, creatieve en culture beloften; Lima, Kinshasa, Yangon, Medellín en Addis Abeba.
Waar gaat het project over?
Verhalen over verstedelijking gaan vaak over de negatieve consequenties van urbanisatie: vervuiling, drukte, ongelijkheid, gentrificatie. Wij zijn Future Cities begonnen omdat we ontdekten dat er ook een ander verhaal te vertellen is. Verhalen over hoop, nieuwe kansen en talenten die tot bloei komen door urbanisatie, groei of hervonden vrijheid. Op onze zoektocht naar de kracht van de stad ontmoetten we changemakers, pioniers en visionairs. Hun verhalen bieden een intieme inkijk in steden die velen van ons niet kennen of een ander beeld van hebben. Ook nodigen ze uit om na te denken over wat nodig is om veilige inclusieve steden te ontwikkelen waar ruimte is voor ontplooiing en eigenheid.
Vijf jaar reizen, foto’s en verhalen in een boek
De afgelopen jaren deelden we de verhalen op verschillende manieren met de wereld; via publicaties, een webdocumentaire, lezingen en exposities. In 2017 won Future Cities een World Press Photo Award for Digital Storytelling. Het is onze wens om vijf jaar reizen, foto’s, verhalen en ontmoetingen te bundelen in een boek. Het wordt een bijzondere uitgave, een unieke combinatie van achtergrondverhalen, visual essays, portretten en veel documentaire fotografie waar de energie uit de Future Cities vanaf spat.
'Future Cities onthult met welke positieve, vaak verborgen energie steden zoals Yangon en Kinshasa worden gevoed. Het is een injectie van positieve journalistiek in een medialandschap dat worstelt om diverse verhaallijnen te tonen.'

En nu?
De eerste stappen zijn gezet. Er is een uitgever die in het boek gelooft en de ontwerpers van Kummer en Herrman zijn al aan het schetsen. De productie van deze unieke uitgave is echter omvangrijk en vraagt veel van de makers, de ontwerpers en de kwaliteit van het papier en het drukwerk. Om de kosten voor het ontwerpen en het drukken van het boek te dekken en de kwaliteit van een fotoboek te garanderen, hebben we jullie hulp nodig. We zijn op zoek naar zo’n 400 investeerders die het boek nu alvast willen bestellen. Dan kunnen wij aan de slag en krijg jij straks een prachtig boek thuisgestuurd. Doe je mee?

Future Cities - photos and stories from the world cities of tomorrow
For the last five years photographer Yvonne Brandwijk and journalist Stephanie Bakker travelled to five of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Not to Mumbai or Shanghai, but to the up-and-coming cultural, creative and economic hubs of tomorrow: Kinshasa, Lima, Yangon, Medellín and Addis Ababa.
The Future Cities stories have appeared in Dutch and international media. Commissioned by the United Nations an exhibition was put together for the Habitat3 urban summit in Quito, Ecuador. The interactive documentary won a World Press Photo Award for Digital Storytelling.
What's next?
In this book we share five years of travel, insights on urban development and encounters with trend-setters, pioneers, visionaries, and up-and-coming talent transforming the fortunes of their cities. The personal stories of these people open an intimate window onto the world behind the statistics of urbanisation and growth and provide insights into what it takes to develop inclusive cities that offer space for unique individuals and personal growth.
Your donation
The first steps have been taken. There is a publisher who believes in the book and the designers of Kummer and Herrman, who also designed the exhibitions, are already sketching. To cover the costs of designing and printing the book and to guarantee the quality of a photo book, we need your help. We are looking for about 400 investors who would like to order the book already. Once we have enough investors, we can start the creative process and you will receive a beautiful book - delivered at your doorstep.
