Wat als een eetervaring zou worden verrijkt met jouw favoriete herinnering? Help mij om mijn idee met de wereld te delen.

Wist je dat geur voor 80% onze perceptie van smaak bepaald? En dat onze reukzin een van de belangrijkste spelers is in de mate dat we van ons eten genieten? Het fascineert mij enorm dat geuren zo’n belangrijke rol spelen in de emotionele evaluatie van ons eten en daarnaast de kracht hebben om gevoelens, herinneringen en nostalgie aan te wakkeren. Muddle: geurende lepels is een interactieve installatie waar de bezoeker een geur kiest om een smaakbeleving mee te verrijken. De ervaring opent een reis naar de verbeelding. Zo vertelde een meisje mij dat een bepaalde geur haar transporteerde naar een jeugdherinnering. Er ontstonden interessante gesprekken tussen mensen over wat zij ervaarden. Tegelijkertijd creëerde het een speciale verbinding tussen mensen doordat zij de persoonlijke verhalen en herinneringen die de geuren stimuleerden met elkaar deelden.

Waarom ik deze ervaring met jullie wil delen? Omdat ik geloof dat onze zoektocht naar zingeving begint bij ons bewustzijn van de schoonheid van verbeelding, en verbinding met anderen.

Wie ben ik als ontwerpster?

Mijn naam is Lotte Meeuwissen, ik ben een Nederlandse ontwerpster. Middels mijn projecten experimenteer ik met hoe ik binnen de context van eten niet alleen onze buik, maar voornamelijk ons mentaal te voeden terwijl we eten. Ik heb een diepe fascinatie voor de menselijke psyche. Binnen dit thema verdiep ik mij in onderwerpen zoals zingeving, emoties, perceptie en de verbeelding. Met mijn projecten nodig ik mensen uit om op een speelse wijze deze onderwerpen te beleven, hiermee bewustwording te creëren en gesprekken te openen over deze thema’s. In mijn werk gebruik ik vaak geuren om een brug te maken tussen de vragen die ik stel en mijn publiek. Dit omdat geuren sterk in verbinding staan met onze identiteit en persoonlijkheid. De ervaring die wij hebben met een bepaalde geur is voor ieder persoon uniek en daarom is het een van de meest krachtige zenders van empathie.

Waarom crowdfunden?

De afgelopen maanden ben ik op zoek gegaan naar de geschikte materialen om een nieuw ontwerp te maken voor Muddle: geurende lepels. De materialen moesten aan een belangrijke eisen voldoen om, desondanks de complexiteit van geur als medium, een esthetisch en food-safe product te kunnen neerzetten.

Hoera! Ik heb de juiste materialen gevonden en heb heel veel zin om te starten met het uitwerken en produceren van de nieuwe ontwerpen. Om dit te kunnen realiseren wil ik jullie steun vragen. De keramiek lepeltjes en geur balletjes worden met de hand gemaakt en het werk is daardoor erg tijd consumerend. Daarnaast zit aan het aanschaffen van de benodigde materialen een prijskaartje. Mijn doel is om een aantal sets van keramiek lepeltjes te produceren om zo mijn idee te kunnen implementeren op evenementen, in restaurants, en daarnaast het ook particulier als product te kunnen aanbieden via een eigen webshop. Ook zal ik een geuren collectie aanschaffen om zo de meest interessante beleving te kunnen aanbieden en hiermee mijn geuronderzoek te continueren.

Mijn doelen op een rijtje:

- Produceren van 100 handgemaakte lepeltjes van keramiek (plus aanschaf materialen).
- Maken van 25 geur concepten en aanschaffen van de geuren selectie.
- Productie van sets geur balletjes (plus aanschaf materialen).
- Ontwerpen van package en instructies voor particuliere verkoop (plus aanschaf materialen).
- Maken van een webshop met gepersonaliseerde “geur-match” bij aanschaf van Muddle.
- Ontwerpen van de ijsbar/installatie zodat ik Muddle mee kan nemen naar evenementen.
- Beeldmateriaal van het nieuwe ontwerp.
- Extra productie van “Muddle Packs” (lepeltjes en geur balletjes) voor tegenprestaties.
- Verzendkosten tegenprestaties.

What if an eating experience would be enriched by your favourite memory? Help me to share my idea with the world.

Did you know that smell decides for 80% our perception of flavour? And that smell is one of the most important players in the enjoyment of our food? I am truly fascinated by the fact that smells play such an important role in the emotional evaluation of our foods and highly trigger moods, memories, and nostalgia. Muddle: smelling spoons is an interactive installation in which (instead of choosing a flavour) the audience chooses an aromatic-sphere to season a tasting experience. The experience takes the visitors on a journey to their own imagination. One girl told me that a smell transported her to a childhood memory. The eating experience opened up interesting conversations between the guests. At the same time, the experience created special connections between the visitors because they started to share their personal stories triggered by the smells.

Why do I want to share this experience with you? Because I believe that our search for meaning in our lives starts with awareness towards the beauty of our imagination and connection with others.

Who am I as designer?

My name is Lotte Meeuwissen, I am a Dutch designer. Through my projects I experiment within the context of food to not only feed our stomachs when eating, but to also feed our minds. I have a deep fascination for the human mind. Within this theme I immerse myself in topics such as emotions, perception, imagination and the search for meaning. My projects invite people to experience those topics in a playful manner. This to create awareness and open up conversations about those themes. In my work I often use smells to create a bridge between the topics I research and my audience. This is because smells have a strong connection with our identity and selfhood. The experience we have with a certain smell is for each person unique and therefore it is one of the most powerful transmitters of empathy.

Why crowdfunding?

The past couple of months I have been searching for the right materials to create a new design for Muddle: smelling spoons. The materials had to meet important requirements to, despite the complexity of using smells as medium, create an aesthetically and food-safe product.

Hurray! I found the right materials and would love to start producing my new design. To realise this I need your help. The ceramic spoons and smell spheres are handmade and which makes the production very time consuming. Next to that I need to cover certain costs to buy the needed materials. My goal is to produce one hundred sets of spoons to be able to implement my idea at events, in restaurants and alongside to offer my product to individuals at home through my webshop. I also need to purchase a collection of smells to be able to offer qualitatively the best experience and continue my smell research.

My goals:

- Produce 100 handmade ceramic spoons (plus purchase of materials).
- Create 25 smell concepts and purchase a smell collection accordingly.
- Produce sets of smell spheres (plus purchase of materials).
- Design of package and instructions for individual vending through webshop (plus purchase materials).
- Create a webshop with personalised “smell-match” when purchasing Muddle.
- Make the ice cream stand/installation to offer Muddle at events.
- Photography and video material of the new design.
- Extra production of “Muddle Packs” (spoons and smell spheres) for compensation.
- Shipping costs of compensation.
