Ik ben Sofie Knijff. Ik ben fotograaf en ik lanceer deze campagne om geld in te zamelen om de productiekosten van mijn fotoboek, Translations, te dekken.
In de afgelopen jaren heb ik kinderen in verschillende delen van de wereld gefotografeerd en gevraagd naar hun dromen voor de toekomst. Ik portretteerde ze als hun favoriete droom personages en sprookjesfiguren. Werk dat ik nu graag met jullie wil delen!

Het maken van een publicatie is kostbaar. Door mee te doen aan deze campagne help je me om Translations te produceren. Alle donaties dragen bij aan de drukkosten en het ontwerp van het boek en zijn daarom van essentieel belang. Voor elke donatie is er een leuke tegenprestatie!

Over Translations :

Ik vroeg me af hoe kinderen worden beïnvloed in de dromen die ze kiezen voor de toekomst. Speelt afkomst, cultuur, geloof en leefomgeving hierin een belangrijke rol? De fantasiewereld van kinderen rond 8 tot 10 jaar fascineerde mij. Rond deze leeftijd zijn kinderen autonoom maar nog steeds verbonden met een kinderlijke fantasiewereld.

Ik ging opzoek naar kinderen in verschillende delen van de wereld.
Zo fotografeerde kinderen in Mali, India, Amerika, Zuid Afrika, IJsland, Groenland, Brazilië, China, Mongolië Sri Lanka en verschillende Europese landen.
Ik koos er voor om in elk land met dezelfde neutrale achtergrond te werken. De kinderen bepaalde daarin zelf de aankleding van hun personages. Deze aankleding ontstond vaak vanuit improvisatie met de middelen die aanwezig waren.

Nu ga ik een boek maken waarin al deze dromen worden gebundeld. Om dit mogelijk te maken heb ik uw hulp nodig!

Het boek

De kracht van de serie zit in de herhaling van het steeds op dezelfde manier fotograferen van kinderen - geïsoleerd van hun leefomgeving - waardoor hun dromen een universele betekenis krijgen.

Een boek is daarom het ideale medium om deze droompersonages uit verschillende landen naast elkaar te leggen, ze te versterken en te laten communiceren met elkaar.
Een reflectie naar onze eigen jeugd, wat er van onze dromen en verwachtingen is geworden, hierdoor ontstaat er een dialoog tussen geportretteerden en jou als kijker. Het roept ook vragen op naar wat er met al deze dromen zal gebeuren en in welke mate de ontwikkelingen in de verschillende landen daar invloed op hebben.

Graag wil ik het fotoboek Translations gaan drukken! Het ontwerp, door Kummer & Herrmanwordt in augustus 2020 afgerond .De lithografie wordt verzorgd door Harold Strak. Het essay is geschreven door Rutger van der Hoeven, buitenlandredacteur van De Groene Amsterdammer. De internationale uitgeverij Hatje Cantz Verlag in Berlijn gaat het boek in een oplage van 1100 boeken in 42 landen distribueren.
Het boek zal in oktober 2020 in het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam gepresenteerd worden!

Wie ben ik？

Ik ben een Nederlandse fotograaf gevestigd in Amsterdam.
Ik begon mijn opleiding aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht en na mijn afstuderen speelde ik in theaters in Nederland en België.
Ik heb mijn diploma aan de Fotoacademie Amsterdam behaald als winnaar van de Photo Academy Awards 2007

In 2015 verscheen mijn eerste fotoboek Asnoix waarvoor ik werd genomineerd voor Best Photobook 2015 in Kassel ( Duitsland) Mijn tweede publicatie Being There verscheen in 2019 n.a.v. mijn solo expositie Being There in Galerie Caroline O’Breen in Amsterdam. Beide publicaties zijn self published.
Voor mijn boek Translations zal ik voor het eerst samenwerken met de internationale uitgever Hatje Cantz Verlag.

I am Sofie Knijff. I'm a photographer and I'm launching this campaign to raise money to cover the production costs of my photo book Translations.
In recent years, I have photographed children in different parts of the world and asked about their dreams for the future. I portrayed them as their favorite dream characters and fairytale characters. Work that I would like to share with you now!

Making a publication is expensive. By participating in this campaign you help me to produce Translations. All donations contribute to the printing costs and design of the book and are therefore essential. There is a nice consideration for every donation!

About Translations:

I was wondering how children are influenced in the dreams they choose for the future. Does origin, culture, religion and living environment play an important role in this? The fantasy world of children around 8 to 10 years old fascinated me. Around this age, children are autonomous but still connected to a childlike fantasy world.

I went looking for children in different parts of the world.
For example, children in Mali, India, America, South Africa, Iceland, Greenland, Brazil, China, Mongolia photographed Sri Lanka and various European countries.
I chose to work with the same neutral background in every country. The children themselves determined the decoration of their characters. This decoration often arose from improvisation with the means that were available.

Now I am going to make a book that bundles all these dreams. I need your help to make this possible!

The book

The strength of the series lies in the repetition of photographing children in the same way - isolated from their living environment - which gives their dreams a universal meaning.
A book is therefore the ideal medium to compare these dream characters from different countries, to strengthen them and to let them communicate with each other.
A reflection on our own youth, what has become of our dreams and expectations, this creates a dialogue between the portrayed and you as a viewer. It also raises questions about what will happen to all these dreams and to what extent developments in the various countries influence them.

Now I would like to print theTranslations photobook! The design, by Kummer & Herrman, will be completed in august 2020. The lithography is provided by Harold Strak. publisher Hatje Cantz Verlag in Berlin will distribute the book in an edition of 1100 books in 42 countries.
The book will be launched in october 2020 at the Nederland Fotomuseumin Rotterdam!

Who Am I ?

I'm a Dutch photographer based in Amsterdam.
I started my education at the Theater Academy of Maastricht and after graduating performing in theaters throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. I received my diploma at the Photo academy Amsterdam as winner of the Photo Academy Awards 2007

In 2015 my first photo book Asnoix was published for which I was nominated for Best Photobook 2015 in Kassel (Germany). My second publication Being There was published in 2019 following my solo exhibition Being There in Gallery Caroline O’Breen in Amsterdam. Both publications are self published. For my book Translations, I will collaborate for the first time with the major international publisher Hatje Cantz Verlag.
