H.E.R.B.S. (healthy environment, remedy for body and skin)

Ik ben Nienke Hoogvliet en in mijn ontwerpstudio doe ik al jaren onderzoek naar hoe we nieuwe materialen of technieken kunnen gebruiken voor een duurzame wereld. Ik richt me met name op de textielindustrie, na olie de meest vervuilende industrie ter wereld is. Begin dit jaar maakte ik de H.E.R.B.S. quilt.

Chemicaliën in textiel
In 2012 deed Greenpeace onderzoek naar hoeveel kledingstukken te veel schadelijke chemicaliën bevatten. Het resultaat is schokkend: 63% van de 141 geteste kledingstukken bevatte te hoge concentraties van hormoon verstorende of kankerverwekkende stoffen. De huid is ons grootste orgaan en heeft een vermogen stoffen op te nemen. Ik vroeg me af of we dit niet tot iets positiefs kunnen omdraaien: kunnen we stoffen verven met iets dat iets bijdraagt aan onze gezondheid? Vanwege mijn voorgaande onderzoek naar natuurlijk verven met zeewier, heb ik ook kennis opgebouwd over verven met planten. Sommige van deze planten hebben ook een medicinale werking. Ik vroeg me af of dit nog steeds zo is als je het gebruikt als textielverf.

Onderzoek naar het effect van kruiden
In het laboratorium van Centexbel, een textielonderzoekscentrum in Gent zijn er met kruiden geverfde samples onderzocht. Hieruit bleek dat het textiel nog allerlei essentiële oliën bevatten, die positief voor onze gezondheid kunnen zijn.Waarom zouden we verven met schadelijke chemicaliën als we ook met natuurlijke kruiden kunnen verven en zo ons lichaam juist helpen?

Presentatie op de Dutch Design Week
Op de komende Dutch Design Week, van 19 tot 27 oktober in Eindhoven, wil ik mensen vertellen over dit onderzoek en ze er ook bij betrekken. Daarom heb ik een samenwerking gezocht met Gebotex, een textielsorteerbedrijf dat ervoor zorgt dat textielafval op de juiste manier herbruikt en gerecycled kan worden. Zij hebben voor ons witte nog draagbare T-shirts en blouses gesorteerd. Op de DDW kunnen bezoekers dan een T-shirt kiezen en een kruidenverfbad. We hebben er drie: indigo, kurkuma en meekrap. Ter plekke verven we het, waarna het shirt mee naar huis genomen mag worden om daar te ervaren hoe het voelt om een ‘kruiden’ shirt te dragen. Omdat ik het belangrijk vind dit verhaal zo veel mogelijk te verspreiden, om zo zoveel mogelijk mensen bewust te maken, wil ik de T-shirts gratis weggeven. Maar het project kost veel geld en daarom heb ik jullie hulp nodig!

Publicatie
Ik maak een publicatie bij het project. Ik heb heel veel onderzoek gedaan en wil mensen een eerlijk en transparant beeld geven van het onderwerp. Ik wil het boeken graag duurzaam laten drukken, doordrukkerij Tienkamp, die werkt met inkt gemaakt van planten! Hoe mooi past dat bij het project?

H.E.R.B.S. (healthy environment, remedy for body and skin)

I’m Nienke Hoogvliet and in my design studio, I have been researching for years how we can use new materials or techniques for a sustainable world. I mostly focus on the textile industry, which is the second most polluting industry in the world (after oil). At the beginning of this year, I made the H.E.R.B.S. quilt.

Chemicals in textiles
In 2012, Greenpeace researched how many garments still contain too many chemicals. The result is shocking: 63% of the 141 tested garments contained high concentrations of endocrine-disrupting or cancer-causing substances. The skin is our largest organ and has the ability to absorb substances. I was wondering if we could turn this into something positive: can we dye fabric with something that contributes to our health? Because of my previous research into natural seaweed dyeing, I have gained knowledge about dyeing with plants. Some of these plants also have a medicinal effect. I wondered if this is still the case when you use it as a textile dye.

Study on the effect of herbal dyes
Herbal dyed samples were examined in the laboratory of Centexbel, a textile research centre in Ghent. This showed that the textile still contains all kinds of essential oils, which can be positive for our health.Why would we dye with harmful chemicals if we can also dye with natural herbs and help our body?

Presentation during the Dutch Design Week
During the coming Dutch Design Week, from 19-27 October in Eindhoven (NL), I want to tell people about this research and also involve them in it. That’s why I’ve been working with Gebotex, a textile sorting company that ensures that textile waste can be reused and recycled in the right way. They have sorted white, still wearable T-shirts and blouses for us. At the DDW, visitors can then pick a shirt and a herbal dye bath. We have three: indigo, turmeric and madder. We paint it on the spot, after which the shirts can be taken home to experience what it feels like to wear a ‘herbal’ shirt. Because I think it’s important to spread this story as much as possible and make as many people as possible aware, I want to give away the shirts for free. But the project costs a lot of money and that’s why I need your help!

Publication
I'm also making a publication for the project. I have done a lot of research and want to give people an honest and transparent view of the subject. I would like the book to be printed in a sustainable way, by the Tienkamp printing company, which works with ink made from plants! How well does that fit in with the project?
