My name is Nico Strik and this year I'm graduating from the University of the arts Utrecht as a screenwriter and director with the shortfilm La Ruta. Let me share with you what the project is about!
Two years after having migrated from Uruguay to the Netherlands, Sofía returns to her hometown to visit her family, expecting to jump right into her old life again. The reality of what she encounters is very different, as Sofía realizes that things have changed. Is this place still her home, or did her home turn into a strange place?
I migrated from Uruguay to the Netherlands when I was 15 years old. At the time, I was very excited about it. It wasn´t until I went back to visit that I started to realise what I had left behind. My home has changed and I haven't been part of that change. With my film 'La Ruta' (translated to 'The Route'), I want to explore this feeling that I think not only people who have migrated experience, but everyone that has in a way left their hometown or house from their childhood. This film is for everyone with their home close to their heart.
The team in an international co-production
Even though the story takes place in a specific neighbourhood in Uruguay, the message of the film goes beyond the borders. We are doing a co-production between The Netherlands and Uruguay in which we are working with people from different parts of the world to bring such a universal message across.
How to be part of the project
By making a donation you are helping us bring the project to life. Your donation will help us cover travel expenses, equipment rental, catering on set, the distribution of the film, and other necessary expenses. Thank you for your support!
When the film is finished
The project doesn't stop when the film is finished! We will organise a screening in Almere (Netherlands) together with ´Stiching Multiculturele Organisatie Almere´ where we will invite young and old, from different backgrounds, and hold a talk after the viewing to start a dialogue about the subject. Besides, there will also be a prèmiere in Montevideo (Uruguay) as well, in order for everyone involved in the project to be able to experience the film on the big screen. Last but not least, we will apply to multiple film festivals around the globe in order to reach a bigger and international audience.
