Over mij
Over "Miroirs"
“The eye sees itself not, but by reflection, by some other things...”

About me
My name is Seán and I'm a classical pianist from Ireland currently living in Amsterdam. As a pianist, I've gotten to explore centuries' worth of great music, but in recent years I've been trying to hone in on what really interests me the most out of a dizzying array of repertoire. What I find really exciting is how art "preservation" - the performance of existing works - can exist alongside art "creation" - the writing of new music, and how each component can interact with and recontextualize one another in performance. I've been exploring how I, as a pianist and composer, can do this in a meaningful way. This album has come as a result of that exploration!
On "Miroirs"
“The eye sees itself not, but by reflection, by some other things...”
This album revolves around Maurice Ravel's "Miroirs" suite, a suite of 5 pieces for solo piano. Years after its completion, Ravel cited the above quote from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as the inspiration for the work’s title. The quote describes how we do not see ourselves directly, but rather perceive ourselves in the reflections of external sources. In composing Miroirs, Ravel was seeing his own humanity reflected in nature - the excited night moths, the melancholy birds, the boat on the tranquil ocean - and this plane of reflection operated in both directions: each musical piece was in turn an objective yet personal reflection of these natural images.
Reflecting "Mirrors"
In this album, Ravel's Miroirs is interspersed with my own compositions for piano and electronic track, personal musical reflections of Ravel's original works. The natural themes of the music are also depicted more literally in the electronic elements, which incorporate various samples of natural sounds into the musical texture. Alongside my own pieces are shorter works by other composers who engage with similar natural inspirations.
